A thoughtful piece of work about the consequences of domestic abuse, but also about the power of friendship as well.

In the end, we see how - with the arrangement of certain objects in his flat, and the unwashed clothes - Robert is in a very dark place emotionally, leaving the ending open. Will his friend be enough to help lift him out of the depression that has consumed him?

Superb use of the camera in this film - the first-person violence against young Robert was truly disturbing. The grainy shots representing horrible events in the past worked well.

Very good acting by all concerned, with suitable music which never drew attention to itself. The only minor nitpick was with young Robert's hyper-ventilating, that sound effect didn't really work for me, but that really was the only flaw in this film.

Excellent movie.

GREETINGS FROM L.M.A.O. STUDIOS!

Bravo!

This film is beautifully written. The haunting memories, meaningful and realistic dialog, heartbreaking realizations and just a touch of comedy to keep it perfectly balanced.

The cinematography was such a treat to experience. Long static shots mixed with delicate pans gave the film such emotion. The POV from young Robert was also great show of camera use. The blurred overlay to show the past was a great idea as well.

The performances were flawless. I loved how the dialog played center as the camera was off focused. That takes guts to trust the performance without a big meaningful shot.

I have only seen a few TMO films where the music was perfectly fitting. Nice.

The sound effect were also very noticeable and added realism.

Overall, I'm impressed, entertained and most of all...moved.

Hauntingly brilliant film short that moved me deeply. Though it deals with a very harsh subject it is ultimatly a film about survival and hope. I loved the film and found the direction to be of the highest caliber. Beautifuly shot and filled with wonderful cuts and angles that added to the painting of each character. The dead eyed look in Roberts closeups when he is in the past were so telling and shows that with creative editing a good director such as TheFlyingDuDu-Films can take a simple in game shot and use it brilliantly to show something an average director would not see within the possiblities of that shot. Also the effect used in the memories was excelent. DuDu-Flims knows how to paint with his camera. A lovely tough film that I feel is one of the top films of the year. Bravo.

You know what Dom? You caught me beautifully there.
Great turn around on the central character; very nicely done.
Some lovely camera work, a great score, wonderful VOs (special shout out to K4, that must be tough), make this another wonderful movie from one of my favourite tmo people.
Loved it Duderino.

Nice performances from the cast. And a nicely put together film. But maybe I'm the wrong audience as I just wasn't 'touched' by this film as I felt I should have been (considering the subject matter).

Hard Life is a Powerful movie full of Sadness and cruelty, DuDe has managed to craft a fine short movie here telling us about the memorys of Robert, who suffered a horrific childhood and experianced broken hearts from his past relationships, The free cam was used very well in the movie, especially when Robert's Father was beating him and the effect on the screen simulated very well the mind of robert.
The Cast and Voice Acting were brilliant, especially K4's Brilliant Portrayal as The Abusive father of Robert.
The Only little advice i could give you was to make the movie longer, because I Wanted to see more, but apart from that this was a brilliant movie which was superbly written and directed very well.
Well Done DuDe, a fine movie here which kept me engaged to the very end

Powerful performances, powerfull freecam (for the most part), and a powerful meaning. It is unfortunate that I came to the end and sat thinking, wait... what just happened. I re-watched the film and realized, oh, this IS the ending. I don't know, it didn't work for me. When the movie starts out so dramatically and then ends so flat/ on a high note, it partially loses an effect.

Characterization-3-(Out of 4):You defined the lead character and his father pretty well, but I never got the feel for how his past changed his future. OTher than scaring his girlfriend, there was little to say how it changed him.
Camera Work-3-(Out of 4): Mostly pretty good, got a little wild at the end though. Some of the camera angles were odd, and could have used a better angle. For example, in one sceen the leads friend head is partailly off this side of the screen, you could get away with this in other situations but not when there is nothing else on screen and the character is talking.
Dialogue-3-(Out of 4):Mostly good, Had a issue hearing the lead's friend at first, really had to up the volume to hear.
Plot-2-(Out of 4):You had the basis for a good plot, but you never really developed it. There was no conflict or situation resolved. An couple of examples of where you could have went with it would be, he confronts his father about the abuse, or he comes to terms with his anger and changes his life.
Set Direction-4-(Out of 4): good use of the set and props, made the basic apartment look and feel different. The dust like look for the flashbacks was nice, I think there could have been better ways to do it, but what you did worked well enough.
Entertainment-4-(Out of 5): Was a decent movie, a little sad, but without any real knowledge of the implications all this abuse did, it kept me from really connecting to the character.
Summary: a sad little movie about a man who was abused as a child.
Total:-19-(Out of 20)

Gritty, powerful and haunting, there the words that can be best decribed for this movie. A highly intelligent movie with a nice build of character - which a chunk comes from the voiceactors, excellent performances.

A very interesting storyline which really deepens your thoughts and gives you an intrugue feeling afterwards, which are the movies that's most enjoyable to watch. Also you did well with composing of music, and the soundtrack was perfect for the particular movie. It goes well with the camera work, which was another thing that was impressive. It was very well creative with the angles you produced, and just makes the movie more interesting.

Overall I found this movie, Intelligent, well created and an all-in-one-movie. This was extremely entertaining and really well executed. Recommended award and Five star award.

Hard Life is a story on childhood abuse and how negative experiences change a person.

Robert sits in a chair with a glazed look in his eyes as he drifts off into distant memories. Through his childhood we watch a conversation between his father and mother. His parents notice he's listening, probably due to the heavy breathing which would wake a Snorlax. His dad then proceeds to beat six shades of crap out of him. The grainy effects and editing shined in this area, though it's a tad odd that Robert barely made a sound while being beaten.

Fast forward and we watch Becky break up with Robert because she's afraid of him. We didn't get to see scary Robert first-hand so while it's a fair example of significant events changing people's lives, there was no "nail on the head" as it were.

The script tested the skills of your voiceactors to their limits and they happily took on the challenge, skillfully displaying powerful emotions. Music was well placed. It stopped during most conversations, sneaking in when appropriate.

Robert discusses the theme of this movie with Jo who comes up with a clever answer instantly. Then they share their feelings and say things like "I love you man" with hugs. I ask you, what guy talks like this?! We can't do that without being considered homosexual. Perhaps the bond of childhood friends goes beyond society's silly unwritten rules, I wouldn't know.

I wasn't satisfied with the ending. Call me over-dramatic, but I would have preferred something a little more... dramatic? It's positive. I half expected him to shoot rainbows out of his bum. You could have had him commit suicide. Or turn him into a murderer. This human thing you call happiness displeases me. I cheered when the Jedi were wiped out and I'd do it again ya hear me?!

no beginning, no end. just the miserable part in the middle. hard life indeed. i grew up without a father, and always wondered what i was missing. when i see a movie like this, or hear a story from someone about what a P R I C K their dad was, i realize i didn't miss ANYTHING.
a moral tale like this is unusual on TMO. not a lesbian or explosion in sight. it's nice to see a tale of hope and to see a character that might, just might, get over his hard life.
and this is the first movie i've reviewed since i said i wasn't going to give away easy 5-star reviews. but how could i give this one any less.....

A meaningful short film, written and executed beautifully, to show that friendship is what makes people live life to it's fullest. As seen, without his friends, Dom was reminiscing all his negative experiences, however when his friend came, we saw a whole new person.

Fantastic film... In-fact, this is 6-star worthy, congrats Dom!

A beautifully made film - the beggining scene with the neighboring buildings apparent from the out-side window stuck out to me the most, it is amazing how little details like that can make a film so much more beautiful :).

The cast was well-chosen and everyone did wonderfully, especially K4ownzall. I appreciated your use of camera shots to establish the serroundings and make it seem a lot more unique looking.

The violent scenes were as new and unique as they were disturbing - you have given me some great ideas for my future works, so a big thanks for that.

The story itself was great, and wrapped up skillfully in the small 6 minutes. It was touching and heartfelt, and the way Jo managed to deliver a message to the audience without actually doing anything short of just chatting to his buddy was very clever.

Well done!

Hard to watch at times, not because I didn't think it was good, but because of the theme which strikes close to home for many families. I thought it was brilliantly acted by the entire cast, K4 is so scary his voice perfectly pitched, Pooka really carries it well as the older Robert, great delivery.

Music by "Ehma" was a huge element is this, I thought it was so well chosen.

quality stuff,

That was ace - Really! Touching to actually see pictures from Roberts life as a child and the daily rituals he were force to going through since really he had no other choice. That was where he were, and that´s simple how it is for some people. With that fact in mind, it´s nice to see Robert today as a young man even though still probably traumatized and quite depressed over his childhood and the effect it had on him, just sitting there having a nice chat with his good mate. So life is wonderful after all, despite all the problems and ills in this world of ours. Manly love at the top!

Other than that, everything flowed perfect and you really did deliever your somehow daily message without any further comlications. Wonderful dude. And I love that piano piece. Was it Mozart?:)

Nice character study, and wonderful message of hope. You packed a lot into this short film. The characters were wonderfully depicted and performed by a dream cast, and the camera work was delectable--great editing job. For a film like this, music is all important, and you found the perfect soundtrack for it. Great job all around.

Hard Life is literally a hard hitting gritty drama that displays moments of good and bad times!

I thought your use of the free cam was the best to date with some truly exquisite movements to accompany the mood and setting of the film. Great use of sombre lighting and strong vo's to out weigh the situation and stand out. Loved the dialogue and it's chilling tone that was projected.

I also think you did a great job adding aspects of friendship towards the end with an interesting and natural dialogue sequence between two buddies. All this was done well with an excellent chosen score!

All in all this is a great short story that grabs the viewer for it's entire duration. Well done and until the next time....

Ein toller Kurzfilm, indem viel Gefühl steckt, was man auch merkt. Ich finde allerdings, dass vielleicht der Film etwas zu sehr auf diesem Motto 'It's the hard things that form us the most' aufbaut. 5 verdiente Sterne!
