Having little experience with gambling myself, I find it hard to relate with or understand Charlie's fixation. I don't have any addictions either so meh. What these cookies? Those are for... medicinal purposes.

There's little plot development here, it's just two people - man and wife (presumably) conversing the entire 4.30 minutes about how much money Charlie has lost this time, plus the consequences of such a loss, both emotionally and financially. There's no real message except "excessive gambling is bad." Well duh!

So with all that out of the way, what does this movie have to offer? Well, everything (intentionally) hinges on the dialogue and emotion of the characters. For that, it succeeds spectacularly.

Let's start with Amy. Her tone was perfect. She didn't explode with rage (you can tell she's angry of course) when finding out about the titanic sum Charlie had lost, but we're given the impression that this is only because he's not worth it. After coming back to this point yet again, Charlie isn't even worth screaming at anymore. This lack of rage makes him seem even more pitiful.

Charlie attempts to explain but she couldn't possibly understand. He's lost all his money and he knows before this night is over, he's going to lose more. The "I know" scene was very moving till the mood was utterly spoiled. It would be awesome (to the max!11!!) if the movie had ended there, but instead it continues, and Charlie magically teleports from a bedroom to the kitchen. Also, why is the camera focusing on a stone bench at the beginning?

Oh did I not mention the music? It's great. But honestly I was too distracted by the actors who stole the show. It helps that you gave them some damn fine dialogue to work with.

Not many movies can make people actually feel sorry for the characters when something happens, but this one can. Maybe it's because I've never truly experienced getting over a death so films including that tragedy don't have any effect on me and this film is much more easy to relate to. But, whatever the reason, it was superb.

Great VOs, the music fitted perfectly, both had completely believable emotion. A brilliant choice of scenes as well.

Lol - "The thrill of seeing your cards hit on the river". No wonder he keeps losing!

The acting here was excellent, some of the best I've heard on TMO for a domestic drama.

The issue of addiction and the harsh price of getting your kicks from cards was well handled. He explained those kicks very well. I particularly liked some of the reaction shots, it's not easy to get the right emotions out of the facial animations, but that was done well here.

I've let a possible music violation slide - I wouldn't have known if it wasn't mentioned. But I thoroughly advise that all filmmakers are careful to note down whose music they're using during production and credit them on release.

Anyway - a very good short film with superb performances.

Outstanding VO performances bring this snapshot of addiction to life. Major compliments to the voice actors/actresses. Dialogue is pretty strong (though the initial pussyfooting around the issue seemed a little bit awkward to me) and the music fits very well but the artist should be listed (not just the website).

A few editing issues in the mix. The initial shot of a bench outside the house seemed lost as it neither framed a shot nor served a visible purpose. The previously mentioned bedroom/kitchen mixup was noticeable and the "what do you want me to do" dialogue perhaps would work better with the initial camera focus on the male instead of the female. However it is apparent you are putting some thought into how the dialogue should be filmed and it works nicely on the whole. VOs push this into 5 star material. Well done.

Addiction is an excellent drama focussing on the effects of gambling addiction!

You managed to tell a brief story yet add a heavy dosage of drama and grit, which pulls the viewer right in. Excellent editting skills to make this production fluid and realistic with a good eye for the free-cam, I enjoyed seeing you experiment with pans, wide and shoulder shots!

Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see what you have next in store for us!... until then..

Nuke Well in the Addiction!!!

Wow this is great. Are you really entering this into the Newbfest? There is...without a doubt, that you will get AT LEAST 1st in that competition..If you try hard enough, you could get 0th..

A very written story about consequences of gambling addition to families and relationships... The VO performance was outstanding putting emotion behind the lines giving the characters life. Perfect selection of music for the scenes creating drama. Very nice custom overalys...

The only issue I noticed was at the end when he was asking her what to do. The prior scene he was going to bed walking toward bedroom then next in the kitchen. This can easily be overlooked by the screen writing and actor performance....

5 stars...

Great movie!
Good music and editing.

On the other hand, the dialogue part, wich is most of the movie in my opinion, si also well done. I haven't been having any problems with addiction myself, but i can imagine how it is, and i think this portraits it very well ;)

An excellent short drama. Outstanding VO's from Artorious and Mrs. Guppi. Good freecam. (Insert complaint about kitchen/bedroom scene, even though everyone has beat that scene to death). Good music. Best of luck in the comp.

New England Reviews

Piotrtheman, how are you? This epic was a pretty well done film. I think I did see a flaw or two. But that doesn't matter because this was pretty good with script writing and voice over acting. What sometimes really takes me over to different film is by the thumbnail. And this intrigued me into watching this film as now I'm glad I did.

Let me just mention the flaw........... the one and only flaw I saw was when the male named Charlie was walking to the bedroom. That was nice but all of the sudden he ended up in the middile of the kitchen which wasn't even close to the bedroom as for most people; I see them have the bedroom upstairs but I think you're the first to have it in the first floor. Clever, I like something that changes.

Overall, this film had some techniques which were well thought through and a good two person cast for this film that was a smart way. Well done, Piotrtheman and hope to see "Memoirs of an Iraqi Soldier" out soon. (I wrote it! ;))

From the interesting poster and intriguing thumbnail, as well as the films high ranking in the charts, I thought Addiction was going to be a good film. In my opinion however I thought it was one fo the most boring films on TMO that I've seen all year. Althought the VOs were flwaless the plot was tireseome, the film was far too short and had the most abrupt and rubbish ending that anyone could have thought of. Overall Addiction is an overatted and tedious piece of work which can't even be saved by its great VOs. Disappointing.

Fantastic, well done.
The script was well written and extremely moving. The situation handled by the characters was very much like it can be in real life, unfortunately.

Interesting story showing the painful grip that a gambling addiction has on a a couple. Great camera work and strong VO make this stand out. Well done work. Continued success.

Amazing VOs, top-notch direction, and a realistic approach to this problem. I didn't really like the abrupt and realistic ending too much in movie form, but it's sad and it's true, and many other people out there could lose their stuff over gambling.

WOW!!! Piotrtheman, you have indeed progressed from an amuteur movie maker to this great film producer. I must say I really like the simplicity of this film "Addiction" as it really adds an emotional feeling left within it's viewers, well done.
