Film Description

Firstly, i have no idea why my thumbnail did not appear. I have never had trouble with them before. Go figure

Welcome to HATED - a short monologue by me (Sparky) with music composed by Norrie

This is a somewhat different release for me - its quite serious for starters. Hated is a socially focused piece delivered by the all so eloquent 'Skid' who, as you will see, has his own views on the subject.

Written and Directed by Sparky1512

Music by Norrie

VO's by Sparky1512

Poster by Sparky1512

With special thanks to

Dr. House
Dero (for Med)

for your mods and progs,

and to Norrie for a great job (and a speedy one at that) with the music.

I liked this. Pretty solid stuff. Your voiceover was very well done, and the camerawork, editing, and characterization was well conceived. The music fit the movie quite well also.

I totally hate this movie. But that depends on how you justify hate. You're probably thinking, "Oh great, another one of these fools sneakin' around my movie giving it a poor review." Well, if that was the case, then why would I give it 5 stars? I hate this movie because it is so genuinely amazing that it practically blows any other movies/monologues out there to pieces. So, do I really hate this movie? Yes. But do I dislike it? No. Do you get what I'm saying? Because I don't. I'm just rambling on about something that probably means the complete opposite of what I am trying to say, and what I am trying to say is: this movie is excellent! There is a lot to be learned from a great film like this. This movie can be either taken seriously or you could totally laugh your ass off from beginning to end. Since there is someone out there that I hate, I took this movie seriously. For those of you who just love everybody and you're just living in your little world of rainbows and unicorns, you'll probably laugh a lot during this movie. Well thought out Sparky. I'm bookmarking this, downloading this, and I'm defnitely gonna remember this one. Amazing job!

Characterization-3-(Out of 4):The characterization was done pretty well, you got to the point that you understood the lead pretty well. The rest of the cast, not so much, of course they didn't have much of anything to do, so I can't really say much about them. However, with only one person given character, I cannot see myself giving this a 4 points.
Camera Work-4-(Out of 4): Overall the camera work was pretty good considering it was mostly just looking around the bar. You kept a good number of viewpoints and didn't linger on any one too long.
Dialogue-4-(Out of 4): The dialogue felt natural for the character is question. He did sound a bit smarter than you would imagine the guy to be, but other than that it was done well.
Plot-2-(Out of 4): The movie was more of a definition of hate, not much plot there. A good characterization of the one guy, but there needed to be a good story behind it.
Set Direction-3-(Out of 4): Did a good job of turning the bar into a seedy bar. It had a unique look and worked for the picture.
Entertainment-4-(Out of 5):A pretty good movie. It kept my interest, I just hoped for something to happen other than the guy defining his attitute to the world. Throw in a bit more story wise and it could be great.
Summary: A guy hates the world, and he wants to tell you about it.

Narrated by a shady character who provides his philosophical opinion, Hated is a short film which closely examines the meaning of hatred, and perhaps silently asks us to look at ourselves. I would usually despise people like Skid, but you've gone and humanized him. Why is it such a shock everytime we find out some scumbag is not a one-dimensional label? Or has a brain? Or plays Hungry Hungry Hippos with the kids during weekends?

Skid dazzles us with his vast vocabulary, first giving an example of his hatred towards an individual and then a group. I'll just quietly reflect in the corner, rather than bore you with my own lengthy contribution on this subject.

The dialogue was clever. The message was powerful. At first I thought the music was bizarre for this type of movie but it quickly served to emphasize the point. Decent editing. Superb voiceacting. I just can't find anything wrong with this. It doesn't help that I absolutely love these thought-provoking movies when done properly. They're so rare that my mind often wanders to the very foundations of TMO to find a comparison, but at least I can get high on nostalgia. Suddenly the works of Hero164 and Stevostanley live on in my memory once again.

::TMO's got talent entry::

Although this sin't a music video, this is acceptable. The camera uses were good and so was the free cam. A fine competitor

Fantastic. Powerful stuff. Well written. Very well done on all phases: Camera, VO, editing, music, etc. Very effective delivering the message.
Strong work!

A very powerful and thought provoking piece of work you've assembled here; however, it did make me have a prevalent realization; that realization being...I hate you Sparky.

Brilliant, powerful, and so smart! Sparky gives us a lot to think about here in this film. For instance what a sharp insightful writer of dialog he is. What a brilliant actor he is, and what a fine director he is. I hate the fact that he is so good. Just kidding Sparky. I love your work!

What an incredible short. A thought provoking short. I can definately relate to the main character alot more so when I was younger and growing up in the south bronx and protecting what was mine. Eventually I grew out of that mentality i'm sure a part of it is still there. Everyone can relate because everyone hates. What everyone hates is different but we all hate

Ah. this is excellent, Sparky. This is a well written chilling monologue of a psychopathic "philosopher". His righteous rant reminds me of Tim Roth in Made in Britain or Irvine Welsh's Begbie as well as characters I've met in real life a few times. I chuckled at the scenes where he was mindlessly punching the wall and where the girlfriends in the back alley were boxing. Nice freezeframe at the end too.

Very good - he reminds me of classic British low-lifes from the 90s and early 00s like in Trainspotting, Lock Stock and Football Factory. Scumbags who are somehow very articulate about their situation and what they think. This makes them more scary than the stereotype because it's clear they actually have a brain.

Excellent acting - although it should have been "[oh please!]" and not "[shhhh!]" (he doesn't look like the sort who would pander to American tourists who entered his pub - he's proud to be British I reckon!). :)

The final "Oi!" and the freeze frame were a great ending! - good music too in this film.

Very good, your voice, is incredible, probably the best I've heard on here. It was very funny, various blunt objects. It was very good, its too bad there isnt a section here for miscellanious movie genres, or those that are more artful. Check out my movie teaser if you get the chance

Very clever movie. And a wonderful insight into the social nuances of people like this. I love how the character does not try to convince you with eloquance and a well structured argument, but just simply lays it all on the table how it is. You did a great job capturing this 'skid's' view of hatred with the way you acted and I loved the way you shot and edited it: Direct and to the point.

Good job.

For the simple fact that the film made me, in turns, amused, intrigued, reflective, introspective, and then angry enough to want to punch someone in the f ing face...

you get high marks.

Your film provokes, Spark - provokes consideration, provokes contemplation, provokes introspection, provokes emotion, provokes THOUGHT.

Provocative. Art.

Bravo, my good man.

Now, about that face-punching... Hey... hey, you, yeah, you, come back over here... what are you looking at? You want to wake up to bright lights? How DARE you be different than me?

A well delivered film with some nice dialog that provoked me to think, and i really got a sense of a bigger more interesting world that our hero of sorts lives in. Fantastic camera work and as always, Sparks, you deliver some of the best VO work anytime you step in front of a mic. Nice work, you just always knock it out of the park.

I f*cking HATE this movie! lol

Ok, why do I suddenly have the urge to go out and start some sh!t?

Great narration, thought provoking script and entertaining cinematography.

I felt a bit of a Guy Ritchie tone in there.

Well done as per usual, Sparks!

Hmmmmmmm, what can I say about this film?

It was mildy interesting and captivating, but I found it rather basic (Too basic) and very plain.

The voiceovers were brilliant, just I found that they lacked emotion in order to help boost the film's overall effect.

An average film in my opinion, but well thought through, well done.

Wonderful execution. Loved the spinning bar pans, the freeze frame and the sequenced camera movements. Music worked very well with the visuals. I felt the punching of the wall scene was a bit too much, leaning more towards caricature. But then, if I??m guessing, Skid is just that - a caricature, evidenced by the "We are what we are....right?" question which seems to be asked more by Sparky than by Skid. Called to mind Bukowski's dive bar characters but a lot uglier in tone. Racist underpinnings were notably absent from subject matter that for better or worse nearly always includes them (or do they exist in the cliquish group talk?).

Would have been five star material even without the excellent execution because it??s caused me to ponder what I really think of it (and being completely incorrect about someone elses intentions wouldnt be a first for me).

Eh, my take (wrapped up in a wee little nutshell for easy consumption). Hate is easy, long on emotion and short on thought. Anger on the other hand...

Great stuff Sparky. A very interesting perspective and consideration on a subject largely overlooked.
Great concept looking at the different aspects of hate - the views taken by different people with different takes on situations.
Certainly some things to think about in there!
Excelently put together, love the cuts to examples and action.
Well done to Norrie as well for a brilliant Score.

Good Job Sparky, A successful experiment in film making!

Wow cool movie, made me think. The music fit with it perfectly, i dont think you could have chosen a better track. I like the narration it was very clear i didnt once have to stop and think "what did he say???" and the bar mod was excellent it suited your story much better than the in-game bar.

Best bit of pub philosophy I've ingested in a long while, brilliant voice over, perfect music by Norrie, I liked the hate-hate motif of the knuckles in the poster too.

First things first. Brilliant writing. I read the script and it works as a piece of prose on its own.
Then add the perfect narration, great cam moves, and a perfect setting, and you get a short, but incredibly powerful film.

A very good and thought-provoking movie there! Excellent writing and a lot of valid and interesting points on hate and just all the different ways it can be applied. As for the mods, that is a neato bar, Sparky. As for the freecam, well it was exceptional as always and Norrie's metal jam was very cool and fit the movie's vibe very well.

And after reading devil's review, I feel compelled to share my feelings on hate. Be prepared, it's a doozy!

It is bad. =)

Killer rant, Sparky. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Hit us again. And as often as possible. ;)

I watched this twice. First to hear the monologue, then again to cleanly hear the pretty cool metal track that went with it (and of course to see if their were any mannerisms or nuances I missed in the monologue the first time).

My take on hate... (Yes, it's dang near endless, so no I won't be offended if anyone stops right here if they really don't give a crap)

I'm of the opinion that EVERYBODY is just a product of their environment. The culmination of a life's worth of hopes, fears, wants, needs, both fullfilled and unfullfilled. As soon as I catch a glimpse of somebody drawing near that has had an obviously vastly different upbringing to my own- I get ready for a clash. The one environment I do share with everyone around me IS the street that I walk. And our common ground usually ends right there.

You can just see the differences all over everyone everywhere you look. And it's a frightening feeling to feel disconnected to all of it. I think it's because we're being constantly proded with everyones's own individuality (heck, why not say "free will")- that we're constantly "HATING" (or at least SEEM to be hating) everything that's even just a slight variation of ourselves.

Up until a couple hundred years ago we didn't even have this whole world mapped out yet, let alone settled in. We're still figuring things out. The human race is still getting comfortable with itself on a large scale. And it doesn't help that we're all dressing different, talking different, looking different, and are openly encouraged to do so within our own little societies, and our own little cliques within our societies. And then we even go so far as to celebrate these differences, and while celebrating is fun, it can also alienate those who are different from whatever it is that's being celebrated. I guess WIDESPREAD FEAR is just one of the minor consequences condusive to capitalism, the vehicle driving our societies forward into whatever. We're ALL spreading fear as a catalyst because we're all constantly trying to prove ourselves, and it's become so bad that people WILL sit in a room together, look around at one another, and everybody will just want to smack everybody. Including whomever they're sitting with. And mostly it's because of fear. Heck, they're even naming wars after this crap now.

Capitalism is competitivism, and everyone reflects that. It's our competitive natures shining through. This isn't a bad thing either. I'm totally pro cap. We've come so far, and it's working out. We just need to learn to cope with our mishaps, compensate for the future, and soldier the heck on. As long as we don't blow ourselves to smithereens in the process- someday everyone is going to have a place in this world just by being born into it. And that's something to wake up every morning for.

Great flick.
