Film Description
Nominated for the 2007 GAGA's, poetry category.

As something different, I wrote a poem as the basis of this film. Please do include your interpretation of what it all means to you (I hope it's clear, but I'll never know unless you tell me). It's also best if you view the film and leave your opinion before perusing the other reviews so as not to have them influence your own experience. I hope you enjoy this, and thanks.

I featured a few of the reviews which are representative of the diverse interpretations this film has received.

Ok well you know my feelings on this will be a bit different than others I think(I haven't read theirs)and I bet you know what I mean...
This guy sees the earth as blighted, most likely because of his religious beliefs.Possibly he is seeking redemption for past 'sins'...at least that's the feeling I get from the words. He doesn't see the good on earth, just the bad,the negative, just as many MANY religious people do.He is brainwashed by his beliefs, needs someone to guide him and show him the way,and he can't wait until he gets to heaven, which he thinks is perfect...but also feels that maybe he is unworthy because he has been tainted by his past transgressions, succumbing to temptation, and associating with the evil unbelievers like me lol.
Yes he is lost, and is looking for a group of nice people to give him a glass of Kool-aid:-)
I'm waaayyyy of aren't I?

A very nice poem, with fitting (if a bit heart breaking) images to go with it...

I think this movie is about being human, and being flawed.. we all yearn for this wonderful place, forests, clear water, the garden Eden.. but by our mere presence here on earth, by our desire to posess Eden, we destroy it - humanity has the very bad habit to only know what it had once it is irrevocably gone.

We can only dance with the Angels once we learn not to try to make everything our own, or make it "better" - because chances are, we only make it worse!

Great food for thought, Joseph!

First let me say nice poem and good video,i've always enjoyed wierd movies. Now my interpretation is,i see a deceitful person, like Lucifer, to use other people or beings to try to get to the one true God,as also the Holy Bible speaks of when Lucifer tried to be like God and over power to reign as the most High God.I think in your movie i would label( if you may)your character as Lucifer, looking for the most High God to try and take over where he reigns. Also the paradise that was given to Adam and Eve but then destroyed by their own human lust(that is kicked out due to disobeying)which led to birth of 2 brothers, one murder that led to many more and never stopped, due to lust for power.I think your movie is about searching for power rather than cleansing. But i did like your movie.Check out some of mine and rate, please, thanks.

Hmm, well here's my take.
I think it's a Heaven on Earth parable. The Power Station, the litter, the streets, all man made: all a blight on...
...nature, where the Angels dance. But man brings his own demon (gases spewing, engines whining)to destroy Paradise.
Then you seek a place where God resides? In each and everyone of us; only we know the way to save ourselves.
And the priest and baptism? Religion isn't God, humanity is.

That's what I got anyway.

I think our narrator truly tries to find heaven - or at least what he thinks it is. As he talks to a priest, it's near that he tries to find heaven with god's help. But instead of resting in heaven, he destroys his own paradise and becomes so to his own monster - a feature many men have.
I am not sure how I shall see those angel scenes. It might be so that it's only metaphoric and stands for the way he might treats his fellow men, or that mankind is destroying their own heaven. It's also near that he (as I mentioned already) tries to find own heaven with help of god, but as he doesn't really believes in it, it's possibly that he's ruining it himself.
I personaly would say the film stands for all three things. Men are running after something they think it exist, but are destroying it too. A lesson we have learnt in human history, hopefully. And the question of believe, everybody has to declare for himself.

Well, the VO sound quality was a bit below average but the poem was well told and I liked the imagery of the demon awakening out of the man.

I'm not sure what it means though, this kind of guessing game doesn't really appeal to me. But if I have to make a guess, it's something about the man's quest for religious/spiritual fulfillment leading to an even worse monster growing from within.

excellently written and well performed. the man is a former sinner or something but then turned to religion expecting it to make everything better. it doesn't and he sees everything being bad and wants to go to a place where everything is good and Lucifer shows a fake vision of this place and possesses the man.

i understood it as man polluting nature and eventually this demon of pollution we have realised will swallow up everything that is good in the world,

This is a really good poem and I was actually thinking of doing something like that myself but I don't really have a good enough voice for it. Ah what the hell I'll try anyway. I was surprised to see that your 15 second film has been getting some bad reviews recently and I cannot understand it. They just don't get what you are trying to do and are only reviewing the film on face value without trying to decipher the meaning behind it. Maybe it's because you didn't write a summary on the main themes like usual but anyway those reviews were totally undeserved. It's like those random people giving 1 star ratings on my film. Btw thx for rating it - it means a lot that you would go out of your way to do that, especially thx for the 5 stars. I don't feel I deserve that when compared to your movies. I am a fan of your work and maybe you can tell I was very enthusiastic about your movie EXTINGUISHED due to my extensive review. Anyway thx again and I can't wait for your next release.

Macwemyss.

Wow... I wish I could write like that. Great job.

My interpretation of it was from the environmental side, in which us humans are destroying paradises with their wastes and ignorance of the environment. At least that's what I got out of it.

Again, great job. I can't find anything that would improve this masterpiece.

WOOOOOW--- to me this movie is about seeking ones own paradise. Away from the termoil of everyday life and existance in general. This place is Incredibly difficult to find yet is attainable to those who have enough soul to keep searching and trying.
VERY deep!!!!!! and incredibly well done.

A very, very nice artsy film Joseph! Loved it. It was great.
Your vo's were amazing. I loved the way you put this together.
Fabbo camera-work and sweet editing. Excellent stuff.
It was short, but very well done. Great short. Top job dude!

In short I think this one is looking (as many of us do) for a thruth (maybe The Truth), for a paradise, for a heaven. He has in his mind how that place looks, and he thinks he finds it, just to learn, that this was not it - or was it? Maybe he knows where the place is, where angels dance, but can he accept it?

As poems often do, they give more questions than answers, such is this poem also! =O)

Anyways, as a movie it was well directed and a good use of scenes - as it always is with your movies. You are a real "Movie Making Legend".

Angels Dance, disturbingly poetic.

Again, Mr. KW releases outstanding work.
Again, Mr. KW incorporates a message within a message.
Again, Mr. KW adds another chaulk-line to his ever increasing list of Masterpieces.

Joe, my interpretation of this well written and directed film, is one of a combination of ideas and possibilites. However, no matter what i say, it will not be original in the sense that everyone whom has viewed this film has pretty much drawn the same conclusion.

Mine would be almost verbatim to what Sisch has expressed.

I remember our conversation when you mentioned this project to me, saying that it would be without music; at first, i voiced that i was a little withdrawn by the idea, but you assured me that it would be fitting. And now, seeing it as it is, it is as you said it would be. How dare i ever doubt the creative genius of Mr. KW. As punishment, i will cut off my eyelids and wonder a desert.

Very nice KW. A high quality piece as we have come to expect from your studio. In my opinion, we here see a personification of the human condition - mans innate desire to seek beauty, peace and harmony only to destroy the very thing he seeks. Man wars against man, man creates and destroys God, man discovers a beautiful land, and then destroys it when others come to share in its beauty. Man's creations seem only to perpetuate our own destructions. Nice work my friend. Thought provoking and well read / written.

cheers

I just watched this one twice, Joseph. Very nice ending. Disturbing. Scary!

My interpretation? Well, I'm pretty "thick" when it comes to such things, and see them mainly at their surface level. Best guess is that the man contained either the devil's heart, or a demon spirit and it was all an evil plot to kill God him/her/it/self... eventually. The old war between Good and Evil just got nasty.

But what do I know? :):)

Nicely done Joseph! As always, your movies are flawless in the technical field, and this is no exception! I loved your use of symbolism, particularly with the dance, the fog, and the floating trash. One must be cautions in their actions. Bad actions can lead to regrets, which can lead one to search for a solution- a solution which may not be right for them. One must be careful of their environment, as it can drastically affect one's mindset, and lead them to do things that he or she may regret later.

Haha, okay...I'm sure my interpretation is waaaaaaaay off, but I tried, and if I'm wrong...oh well... =P
I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually!

The best thing about your films is that you always learn something by wathching them!

Bravo, Joseph! =)

You mesmerizing voice and meaningful poetry carried my mind away to a good place.

a very touching, simple, yet relevent short piece.

Poetry?

Yeah, why not!

Add it to masterful directing skills, composing, producing, voice acting, special effects...no wonder Joseph's one of the best film makers here (if not the best!) with talents like these.

As for my interpretation...I sort of see this as a guy looking for redemption for whatever sins he's committed, but ultimately unable to forgive himself...am I close?
Because I'm really not too hot with poetry.

Anyways, that's how I see it.

A five, because although this is a short movie, there is no lack in quality here.

Nice work sir.

An intriguing poem, Joseph.

Man tries to run away from his responsibility to Earth but whatever paradise he seeks, he will only find bad consequences that resulted from his own flaws until he stops hiding and realizes that responsibility.

Intriguing. I think Sisch and a few others have nailed it. It is a catch 22 for mankind as he tries to seek solace away from the spoils he has wrought on earth only to bring more blight until finally he looks toward the heavens for peace.... or more destruction?

It is indeed a beatifull poetic film and your direction was fantasic as always! =) Only your voice was a bit emotionless I thought, but well just a little bit... anyway I think the place where angels dance is the place where he has silence away from all the stress and destroying ...well monsters(people).
But I didn´t understood all of the vo since my english isn´t so good... anyway nice little film, I enjoyed watching it!=)

Nice metamorphis taking the viewer from a light happy place to a much darker twisted one. The final line sent a light quiver up my spine. This is not a "man" who will wage war with the eternal but rather extinguish it in one fell swoop. Hehe romance.
