Film Description
1st Place Winner of the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival Competition, 2007, and was shown on the big screen at the Hollywood Theater in October as part of the event.

This is not only a different genre for me, but also a different narrative approach. Unlike my past stories, I resisted the urge to ???spill the beans???, and never simply explained the plot???it is up to the viewer to piece the bits together and figure the story out. Please let me know what you think of this elusive style (it???s the only way I can improve my filmmaking). Thanks for taking the time to watch something different from me, and a special thank you to Bezzer36 for providing voice overs for a character which I later decided to omit from the final cut. ~JosephKw

*Spoiler Alert* This is in case my viewers can't make heads or tails out of this story; I don't want anyone to walk away frustrated, so I'm including a summary of my alternate ending scene which will explain the entire elusive storyline. Near the end there's a scene where Henry meets May in the kitchen at night, New Year's Eve. May is horribly aged. She explains that it is normal for her. She is a timeless being, but not ageless. She is connected with the cycles of the Earth, and ages six years for every month that passes. However, at every new year, she is renewed as a newborn. She needs someone to take care of her during her first month of the new year--thus she finds "husbands" to do this. During the rest of the year she'll be a loving companion to them, but only for fifty years. She fears the husband will grow too old to care for her beyond five decades. Her previous husband, Mel Ein, refused to terminate the relationship as promised. She feared leaving him until after she had secured a new husband and caregiver. Finally at the end scene we see May in her prime again as she courts a new potential husband, and Henry must let her go as he promised.

Special thanks go out to Trewill7 for the movie poster.

Awarded: 1st Place Winner H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival 2007 Competition, Prufrock Award for Outstanding Cinema (from JazzX), Nuketastic, MurpheyKid Recommendation, the Chief Award, JamesEva Romance. Nominated for the 2007 GAGA's (romance).

CAST
Dulci as May
AnotherNewDawn as Henry

I find this film impossible to review properly without spoilers. Watch it now, you won't be disappointed - I promise! Then you can read this guff ...

SPOILER WARNING!!!!!

An extremely romantic film in the broad, gothic sense of the word. Not a frame was wasted in this lovingly crafted (no pun intended Mr Lovecraft!) movie.

The explanation for the film works well - maybe I would have "got it" better if this was made with real actors where we could see the subtle changes that May goes through in the cycle. I did cotton on very early that something about May was very secretive, the allusion to some weird foreign country made me think vampires or something like that.

The romance part of the film was very well handled with some great lines ("I'm away in June, but I'll have May all to myself" is my favourite) as he's trying to chat her up. I also had a sneaky suspicion that his choice of movie had something to do with the plot in a funny indirect way!

The scene with the drunken friend was very good - "know my name!" was genuinely scary. It reminded me a little bit of the key scene near the end of the original version of "The Stepford Wives" (the face framed in a similar way too). It came as a complete surprise - even though I felt something wasn't normal about May from the off.

This film was so well played, I almost wish it had stayed as an out-and-out romance and not diverted into supernatural territory. I enjoyed being in the company of the two leads while they were together early on and didn't really want to "let go" of that. But the story must move on alas! And what we got was a terrificly original supernatural romance story.

SPOILERS END **********************

Now the technical achievements in this film:

Acting: Excellent. Completely convincing by all involved for the most part. The pacing of the conversations flowed very naturally. There was genuine chemistry between the leads, I wonder if they rehearsed over skype or something like that.

Camerawork: Although the "plant" transitions were a good idea, they didn't quite work - you could easily tell the jump from one scene to the next. But this is very very minor - I appreciate the effort to do something different in moving from one scene to the next. All the subtle camera moves - so subtle as to be unnoticeable - did their part in making this a pleasure to watch.

Sound: Not the most demanding film in this department - but what there was was handled perfectly. No complaints at all.

Music: Very good - placed just right. It suited the mood of those scenes where it was needed very well. Great job by the composers.

Pace: A deliberately slow burning story, but never dull or boring. It's nice to see a film where scenes are allowed the time to breathe for a change.

So - put it all together and what do we have?

A TMO classic, that's what.

Haunting.

I've seen this film twice now. It actually sent chills through me, even though I knew what was happening. In fact, this film was better the second time around in my opinion. Not just from a technical point of view (well, maybe a little). It was great to catch little hints and comments and understand just what they meant (or not!). Even so, there are mysteries in the film that go unanswered. And I love that. Makes me ponder.

And that whole "know my name" scene... brilliant. Freaked me out a little... lol

Anyway, here's an edited version of my review of the film when I got to see a sneak peek of it (thanks again for that):

------------

First Impression: Slow romance that took a long time to get anywhere. Not necessarily a bad thing, but people with short attention spans might lose interest before the "fun" begins. Personally, it took me the first few minutes to get "into" the film. I'm not much of a romance person, and I KNOW THAT, so I didn't let that stop me watching (not an option, really).

Technically: Damn near flawless! Loved the camera work. Not over done like many people tend to do on TMO (myself included). It was just right. Loved the transitions from scenes using the trees/bushes. Works well (tried it myself once ;) )

Voice work, dialogue... terrific. Very believeable performances from ALL the cast. Not much else to say other than terrific.

Music/sounds... just right. Again, on a technical level, this film is hard to fault. So I won't...

Story: and this is where it all counts, in my book. I have to be totally honest here: I LOVED IT. This isn't a rubber stamp "oh this is great" review. This is genuine. I really loved it. The only flaw (and I said it earlier) was the amount of time it took to make the transition. It could be the medium this movie is filmed in... we (or just me?) expect results very quickly with a TMO movie. With your retextured sets, and smooth camera work, you managed to keep me entertained visually as the story progressed. But it was a little impatiently. If this had been made using REAL actors, etc... then I think your timing would have worked better for me. No way to say for sure, though... without you hiring a film crew... :)

(And didn't Dulci say "Final Night" at one point? lol FREE PLUG FOR ME!!! hehe)

Wow.

I'm...a little stunned right now.

Your ability to move seemlesly from genre to genre...and by that, I mean in terms of genuinely brilliant quality in all of them...amazes me.

Romantic movies...not my favourite genre, I've got to tell you, but the depth and beauty of 'May Flowers' is incredible.

Once again, I've been whisked away into a Joseph Kwong movie, struggling to take in how much great work has been put into it.

In terms of editing, this is your finest hour, with the transitions taking centre stage.

TMO's greatest VA's deliver their finest performances here...absolutely brilliant.

The music, the visuals and of course the beautiful story...all top notch.

Everything here is of a cinematic standard...a standard that elevates Joseph to the top of the mountain here on TMO.

I am very proud to call him a friend and even prouder to call him a true and extremely talented movie maker.

Outstanding.

When anyone informs me that their releasing a romance, i always load up my magnum. So automatically, when you told me you released this film, i was [naughty word!]ed and ready for target practice; however, i was not expecting a "demented" and enjoyable romance like this.

Joseph, you took the genre of romance and made it your love slave, as this is without a doubt, one of the best films i have ever seen on TMO, and that's just from a storytelling point of view. I don't even want to get into your flawless direction and use of free-cam, i'm not even going to mention your perfect editing, writing, and excellent music selection, and if you even think that i'm going to acknowledge those amazing performances by your stellar VO cast, you've got another thing coming buddy. Oh no, i will not speak about any of that.

I've been a fan of yours since Quietus II. You took a romance and added just a dab of your visual, creative, and for the most part, disturbing, ingredients.

But unfortunately Joseph, i must do it to you again. But it's your own fault, and you've brought this upon yourself. Not only am i going to give you 5 painful stars, i'm going to bookmark this film in my personal collection, i know that i may sting you a little, but DEAL WITH IT!

A romance? By JosephKW? Really?

Oh, yes, really, and very much so.

I will stay out of the discussion on this one and let others sing to you (because I may be just a liiiiitle bit biased - I love the flick), but Joseph, know this - I am very pleased.

Excellent work in every aspect available in this medium and kudos to the all of the other talent involved, as well. One of my new favorite roles.

Toldja before, you're bigger than this medium, Joe.

What an amazing and facinating story that held and gripped me from start to finish!!!! You once again take your direction to new angles and limits by giving the romance genre a go. I thought you executed this well as you did with the Action Genre 'Fated' , the Horror Genre 'Quetus' , The Comedy 'Farmer Man' and The Sci-Fi Genre 'The Passage'.

Joseph, you are truly an amazing versatile director that isn't afraid to venture into new areas and as a fellow director who strives to do that aswell I must stand up and applaud.

Congratulations on your latest film and..

Nuke Well in the May Flowers!!!!!!

Very, very... Cosy film. It is difficult to explain it... During viewing around of you as though wrap up a soft, warm blanket and give a cup of hot tea. It is very sensual film touching the most secret strings of your heart. However, not first such film. In Russia already did similar and much more sensual film - " While the death will not separate us... "
But all the same is one of the best melodramas. The good work, Joseph.

P.S. Sorry for bad english. It's a PROMT's translate :-)

A great Lovecraftian Tale is woven by Josephkw. This story is a true romance and has its share of thrills and intrigue. Good play with the "May Flowers" theme throughout.

the direction and cinematography truly makes this movie shine. The soundtrack is perfect for it and the voice actors did a remarkable job. This is truly a masterful film.

Well done.

Well, a damn fine film altogether, and perhaps the most pure romance film I've seen on TMO. It's technically well put-together, and shot superbly. Music and sound were designed well, and set the mood -- including one scene in which the sound went almost dead (appropriate for the circumstance).

While I wasn't necessarily able to get the *fine details* about May without reading the spoiler section, the film certainly does enough to explain the situation in a general sense. Thinking back to some of the individual scenes, I can see more of those details -- she arrives back again the next April, for example, knowing her appearance at that time of the year won't alarm him.

About the only thing I might question as far as the story goes... I wonder if, after some amount of time, he might have suspected some sort of link between her and what happened to Bill. Perhaps, though, this was something taken care of off screen.

Visually, a good job on the various effects work and retextures. Some good set design, and good choices of sets throughout. I would have preferred the camera pans not to go through the plants - but instead go backward and pan down (then the cut to the next scene). The production value here is strong as well.

All around, one of the strongest single-part films I've seen! Right up there with the likes of "Dignity of Men" (Chat Noir) and "Mancini" (DNR).

A mid-to-high 5 stars from me.

BRILLIANT

This film is by far the most best romance film i've ever seen on The Movies Online.

Its uses a brilliant array of scenes and camera shots and i love the voice actors you have chosen to voice the brilliant personalities within this masterpiece.

I absolutely loved it, even though some parts of the film i didn't quite get, the whole basis of this film brought me along (through the film, ) sorry about the oddness of that sentence, lol

OMG This film was by far the best film i have seen on TMO and must I say, this film has a huge influence on me and my films, thanks for your excellent impact on this world :)

Honestly that was a long time I did not watch any movies from TM, and I'm glad I start again to watch some with yours in first position. That was really interesting, the 20 minutes went very fast. You change the genre of movie, and it was really well made.
On technical aspect, everything was perfect. I especialy loved your transition with the plants (I had some time ago the same idea for scene transition but I never tried it).
Anyway, I'm not having enough english vocabulary to say how much I appreciate this movie. Good Job.

Ah Joseph, I love all of your movies, but I have to say that after seeing it the second time, I think it is my favourite of yours.. what a story! A wonderful, touching love story, which is haunting and sends shivers down my spine, I loved every minute of it, every camera angle (especially those that showed the transition of time), the music and sounds that fitted so well and your truly outstanding cast, all of them gave so much life to the characters!
Wonderful, wonderful work Joseph, and I'm very glad that I got that sneak-peek of this movie, and that the viewers fell in love with this movie as I did, judging from the comments made here (I never doubted that they would!)

That was extrorinary. I loved it. May Flowers. That's an odd name. Definetly an odd name. This film was amazing with great talented VOS by Goofparade, A_N_D Dulci Josephkw. (Am I missing anyone?) But this film was amazing. Great music, gtreat VOS really talented VOs. REALLY TALENTED!!! I loved your romance with some comedy. I was laughing out the beginning where Henry thought May's parents were dead. It was so funny.
Another spectacular movie which could be the best film in TMO history. This is in my top 50 and maybe in my top 10 or top 5. Maybe in my top 2. Or in my top 1. This was outrageously good. I recommend this to even people who hate romance. This film had romance, comedy and horror. I love movies with those cobinations. Just really good. MAKE MORE ROMANCE!!!! Keep on filming and don't forget Fated 2 and Passage 4 and I think it could be cool if there was a second one of this too. (Just a suggestion) But great film and I will show this to my brother and family. They will love this. It is long, but it is fun to watch.

Josephkw does romance (with a twist), and does the genre proud.
Beautiful, refreshing and moving work. Is truly seems you can work your magic no matter the genre.
This is an intelligent, mature and perfectly crafted tale.

Your work, no matter the topic, always leaves me in awe and this one is no exception.
Wonderfully scripted, beautifully voiced, perfectly paced, I can??t pay May Flowers enough compliments.

Joseph, you??re a very talented man, everything you touch turns to gold. You never fail to raise the bar on every single genre you turn your attention too.

I'm glad I just popped by. I always like it when a studio tries to break the mould and make a movie against expectations. It's always great when that move is also this good.
One of the more original romantic pieces I've seen on TMO. The cast deliver great perfomances and the script is well written. This combined with the music and some incredible set design works really well with some excellent shot transitions.
If I had a slight criticism (and this isn't really about the movie, but about the concept/idea) it would be that you took a risk with the genre but played it safe with the cast. Although everyone did a great job, possibly using people against type or VA's who may be much less known would to me have completed an experiment into another genre much more fully. For some viewers this is a sensible option, one that comes from the brain whereas I'd have possibly shot from the heart and taken the full risk. I was sort of hoping for Avant Garde (especially as none of your cast are listed in the write up) but I couldn't get away from the mainstream. I re-iterate, this isn't to take anything away from you cast they were all excellent.
Anyway back to the positives. The time flew by and the circular evolving story was one of the best I've seen on TMO and I'd encourage you to take more risks with genre's in the future.

Shocked, happy and heartbroken. I don't believe I have ever experienced these emotions at one time from a movie before.
I find it astounding that, not only are you a superb writer/director, but that your talent is spread across such a wide range of genre!
Here we see your latest endevour, romance, which I can admit is my very favourite so far.
The writing is magnificant. What a plot! Twists, mystery, revelations and sympathy are thrown all over the place and really draw the audience in.
I was overwhelmed at times by the combination of music to the visuals and, most importantly as in many of your films, dialogue.
The VOs were excelent. A great selection of talented actors and actresses animate the story and make real this amazing vision and project.

Congratulations Joseph, you have succeeded once again and made another notch of greatness in TMO movie making.

WOW, I thought May Flowers really was truly a diamond in the rough...
The Imagery and the cinematic flow is puuuurrrfect!

After watching this, I actually took some notes and learned alot!

The seamless transitions throughout the film's plot were noticable,
But not overexaggerated, or painfully obvious,
... To me that was the dogs bollocks dude!

The Movie plot was flawless, how long it took you to write it, i dont know! :P
It was just a thoughtful film and as always it went down a treat!

Just wanted to say thanks dude, for the great contribution

(And didn't Dulci say "Final Night" at one point? lol FREE PLUG FOR ME!!! hehe)

Wow, what a truely inspiring movie. Great story line, beautiful vo's and music. Camera work and mods, retextures were excellent. Clearly a great deal of thought and time has gone into this. A Josephkw classic for sure

WOW! Really great!

I don't want to say give away any spoilers but I thought this was really touching, well written, fantastic music (as usual!) with some great - and subtle - Lovecraftian elements.

I loved the whole cyclic/seasonal/aging theme - it gave the whole thing an almost mythological slant.

Ace!

A romance with a just a little Josephkw unique twist. Hmmm... how to review it without dropping some spoilers? Suffice to say that this movie starts as a first rate romance movie with great dialogue, acting, and music. Only when it reaches it's conclusion do you realize how it was carefully consructed to tell a more complex tale with a distinct Josephkw flavor.

I am not surprised at your ability to switch genres. I think you could film a technical manual and find a way to make it interesting. This is a great movie.

An extraordinary movie as usual from Joseph. You continue to amaze me with your ability at writing, directing and producing beautiful movies. I love the sets and hope to see a hi res version released. The story is intriguing and imaginative. I love the dialogue. I am kind of a dialogue lover anyway. Not a flaw anywhere with direction, lip synch or music (of course you used one of my favorite musicians, Milk_Man_Dan). Excellent editing. The movie kept me riveted to the end.

An epic romance tale, far beyond any easiness and kitsch. I wasn't sure about the first minutes but with every minute the cineatic power got stronger and in the end I was sure that this is an unique, modern tale.

Fresh ideas with camera angles and great written dialogues work fine together and care for an extraordinary atmosphere through the whole movie. My english is too poor to describe the power of this movie.

Joseph,I really liked the way this film turned out.Your terrific script called for some demanding performances from the cast.. and they did very well indeed..
This is my favorite all time performance by Dulci, and well.. A_N_D knocks it out of the park every single time.. it's uncanny.Dialogue driven film that really benefited from the great acting.

Joseph, You are truly one bright TMO light( we need light these days) and "May Flowers" was a very well made romance/thriller.

Anytime you call, I know it's going to be a quality project... "May" was worth it for me.

cheers,

A thoroughly engrossing story.
There wasn't a single moment during this movie where I wasn't captivated by the storyline.
I love to watch movies like this which challenge me to think about what is happening,or what will happen.
As much as I'd love to comment on the details,I won't so as not to spoil it for others, but everything clicked for me in this movie.Sets, set dressing, music, freecam, dialogue,VO's,the authentic time-period settings etc all helped draw me in...very very nicely done:-)
One of your best, and that says alot really.

Joseph! What have you done????? This is an exceptional story, the kind that excels above the normal entries in this gendre. ANoTHerNewDaWN, GooFParadE, Dulci, and PMC were a beautiful combination, each suited for their character. Joseph, Joseph, Joseph...what am I going to do with you!? You surprised me again. Please remember ol K4 when you make it big in Hollywood! WOW!! BRAVO!! ===K4===

Joseph has taken his first baby steps out of the closet - the romance closet!
Straddeling the door way of scifi, horror and romance he has created an entertaining film. Other than sex, watching this movie is the best way of spending 21 minutes of your life.

Voice overs were excellent! I like your scene transitions, they were very professional. The story line was quite original.

If forced by torcher to critize anything this movie the only thing that comes to mind is that it was a bit confusing and reading the spoiler did help in understanding why certain things happend in the movie. This being said it would be best to some how write these important facts into the script. Although there may be limitations in the movie making process to acomplish this easily.

Joesph you did a wonderful job and I wish that eveyone over at THE LOT would die a horrible death because they didn't pick you as a contestent :)

That was without a doubt my favorite TMO romance to date.
It has stirred the deep warmness within me that no TMO movie has managed to do. The VOs were spot on, and were given such realistic and cerebral material that how could they go askew. You have created something very special. You've been able to state such an ultimate truth in 21 minutes that I don't believe it's actually been done. Love has no age. Brilliant!

Wouah it was a surprising and amazing movie! The editing was very good, I liked the effect with the tree for the transition (Sorry I dont know how to explain it). The beginning was a classical romance story and little by little the plot became more interesting for me and I loved this unexpected end!

Before watching:

You made a ROMANCE???!? Oh god. Not another TMO'er taken down by their corny love stories. Might as well watch it to give you a good beating.

After watching:

(with sappy expression on face)
5 stars.

Really, this is one of the best romances ever on TMO or any movie (though I tend to try to avoid romances). Great plot, VAs, and everything that you can think of. This is my first bookmarked romance! Great job!

This is a very nice story, and similar to nothing I??ve heard before!!

As always, I loved your witty dialogue and word plays. And some transitions between scenes were great.

I understand what you were trying to do here, but I think I would have appreciated a little bit more clarity, a little bit more clues (at the climax).

That said, once I realized what was going on (after a puzzled moment) and traced the whole story once again in my mind with that understanding, I could not help but marveled at the perfect beauty of the story design.

Bravo, Joseph, for yet another little gem.

Hell yes Joseph, that was one great film.A wonderful script that goes beyond words and time. A subtle film in one way, monumental in another ... just brilliant. The scene their Bill played amazingly by gp confronts May did it for me. The cast was wonderful and your direction top notch. Sublte in one way, monumental in another ...

Well you did it again Joseph. The thing that got me was that you called this a romance movie; well I wouldn't have called it that :)

Well written, directed, and produced TMO movie.

WOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!
THIS needs to go to Fox, or spielberg or someone like that! I have to say this is the most amazing film ive witnessed in a LONG time! The storyline was absolutely amazing and quite original. The characters were brilliantly portrayed and very well executed by there respective actors and actress's. I can not say enough about how well the story was written and then put to screen! I used think My stories for Red Squad were good, but now i know i was wrong
DUDE,,, YOU RULE
As for the tech side " WOOOOOOW" X2! The editing and cutting and background, and forground, sound effects, and special effects were just uncanny! Just the length of this movie musta have made this a very dounting task to complete. 21 mins! The longest movie ive made is around 16 and MAN it took more months to get it right!
I never considered myself a big fan of romance movies, but when you mixxed in a little bit of scifi this thing just completely blew my mind!
AWESOME AWESOME creation! I would put this movie in as many contests as you can, Seriously it WILL win!
Keep me informed on any projects, I WANT to see more!

Woah Joseph! I would have never expected a omance movie from your studio! It's great to see you delving into different genres, and you really approached this with a very creative touch in storytelling. Technically speaking, this movie was perfect! The sound effects, music, and voice overs were all up to par. When you mix these perfect technical aspects with an original story, amazing direction, and Mel Ein-again (hehe), you are sure to have a very successful movie on your hands! Good Job Joseph, you have really displayed that you can successfully entertain in all genres, and that is a very hard thing to do!

That was incredibly awesome, I really enjoyed the genre style you chose for this movie. It was brilliant. Your cast and their voice-acting were superb. The special effects really backed up the storyline that you researched to bring about a deep history to this story. It was well told and well presented. Great job on your first romance. I really felt for the characters from their style of acting and the storyline.

Well, that was a very good film, up until the little "twist". I found it to be a very strange twist that I really don't understand and may come to understand upon further viewings, but I have to say that it just doesn't make sense to me. I thought the film was perfect up until that. I'm going to say this and it'll probably offend and I'm sorry about that, but the twist ruined the film for me. Everything else about I liked it, but the twist really didn't do anything for me. Great voice acting and a great script. Good job.
