(-: If you haven't seen the movie yet, I advise you to do so before continuing to read this. :-)

This is my first foray into making a film in a medieval setting, though I have to admit I'm not without my influences. The two that stand out most for this movie are 'The Bridge over the River Kwai', and 'Mysterious Cities of Gold'. Yes, things have twisted about significantly since I first wrote the plot 'Ascension', though those well-attuned to those two influences may recognise a line or two as being inspired.

Now that I've ruined the magic of the film, I may as well say it -- The story was significantly altered from the original plot, for the sake of the Fable Competition. Three weeks overdue, 5 minutes over the length I was going for (though I guess I did have a 10-page script), I'm still pretty happy with it. The Fable-style choices influence is there (though if you didn't catch it, and just got confused to death about what was happening, give it another look-over), though I did try to keep the overall tone there. I've been wanting to make a decent medieval film for a while (since it's a genre I tend to write in), and I also wanted to show to many nay-sayers that there's still life in the old bird yet. TM-made movies may not be as flashy as some of the other machinima formats, but honestly, I can't discount it out of the race.

At any rate, I have to really thank two people for helping this be possible. While I'm immensely appreciative of everyone involved, two warrant a special mention. The first is one of the people I consider a King of TMO. Rik_Vargard. Always helpful, supportive, creates awesome mods (while I've listed many, this film really rests upon his genius as far as props/sets go for the most part), makes wonderful music, and tends to inspire so many to excel in this format because of his unique vision.

The other person I really have to thank is goofparade. Some of you may have noticed above that I've got his name twice in there -- that's no typo. Goofparade really did both rules. He really saved my neck when he agreed to fill in for Aram, and honestly, I had my doubts before he agreed, as to whether I would get to finish this. Truly a lifesaver, and by no means anybody's second choice.

A NEURAY REVIEW (lol)

THE GOOD:
The storyline. Very well written, good plot, great work. The Voice overs were good too, the music was well used, it totally helped bringing the story alive. The freecam use was amazingly good, some nice shots. The mods & set dressing were excellent. The medieval theme was very well executed, with a nice story that keeps you on the tip of your seat during the whole film. If you love medieval films, then you can't let this one unnoticed.

THE BAD:

Ohh well I really thought I reviewed this back then. Just came back to see it once again and oh... where's my review...? Did I ever missed the Rate Movie button or something lol? Anyway....

I REALLY enjoyed this movie A LOT!! One thing that you're taking more time for than before, is using the cam to set the ambient with some really gorgeous shots. To me the most beautiful are those while he travels.
The whole plot is very deep and the main character is well developed. Well the whole storyline might look like a little complicated, but just knowing this movie talks about possibilities and choices made me find out how to watch it.
Once again, along with "Foreigner", you show you have a style on your own.
You have your own way of telling stories, so it always ask for a minute of adaptation, wich is excellent, because it proves it's originality. And I love that.
VO's where absolutely great. Nobody I could say he could've done otherwise.
This movie didn't blew me away like a blockbuster, but it did leave me in awe because of the artistic side and the storytelling.
Excellent!

Had all composite parts of your bog standard great TMO movie. Editing and all that jazz. I can't be bothered to elaborate on it because we've heard it a jillion times before.

4* for all that...and now that elusive 5th...

Bravo, Tarison. Bravo. You have succeeded in creating a unique and visually stunning fantasy masterpiece with Ascension. From the wild west to the outer reaches of space, and now to the mythical lands of Gallekin, you continue to conquer and amaze audiences everywhere.

Your true prowess as a filmmaker shines in the creation of Ascension. You are able to take a complex plot and handle it with the upmost delicacy and efficincy. Where a lesser director would lose you in the time-shifting story, you handle it perfectly.

Your set creation and visual style are the highlight of this tale. If there were a TMO award for cinematography this would win hands down.

I will end with mentioning the lesser recognized anchor of this film. Goofparade. His ability to handle two main characters, and breathe the gift of life into them so effortlessly is nothing short of amazing. A big hats off to him. My compliments to Kwis and the rest of the cast as well.

An film easily deserving of that 5 star accoldae.

Well, I've watched this twice now, and I am still a little confused about what really happened. Some technical points first: There are some really cool mods/props in this film that make it look appropriately mediaeval. That's very important, in my book.

The music was all great, as were the VOs. No complaints in that area.

Now... the Red and Green filters.... while they looked nice, I really missed the point of them. I'm notoriously "thick" when it comes to subtlety in films, so I guess it was me. Maybe they were purely for mood... if so, then they were used a just a tad too much in my opinion.

This was a good film. If anything, it probably needed to be longer and a little more detailed in its story telling. As it is, 4.5, I think.

That was amazing! I love medieval flicks! :0

The fable music was classic. I love the fable music. All the voice actors did wonderful jobs, and they were easy to hear as well. The story was great, and the mods were stunning. I was on the edge of my seat as I watched all the action, death, excitement, and fighting going on in the movie. It was really entertaining.

Great job, Tarison.

film on!

Great story and very well drawn characters make for a pleasurable viewing. The music is well placed and the set dressings, well what can I say, I was taken back to a time of castles and kings. I really like the story on this film. I didn??t expect the ending and it was satisfying when it came. My only grip is the traveling scenes. The horse and rider seem to go on for well longer then needed. A quick fade in/out would have been better then watching the rider make his trek. But all in all, a very well told story with good voice actors and dialog. I really enjoyed this one.

Strong Title. Good opening segment, sets tone; I'm have problems with our main character and his quest; his search for Malcus. I understand the logic, out think your nemesis, get his plans, but you're source, Malcus, for me has to be blood related or a spy. Who is he? Can he be trusted? Powerful line. "the blind sage has seen him", cut out been and with. There is a cardinal rule in Hollywood. Always go with the flow. For instance: if character 1 says, "I have nothing to tell you", and character 2 replies, "liar" and kills him, he's restricting the flow of the scene and must be bagged. Did he stumble upon Malcus? You could have worked in this tower idea. I can sense your passion.

A wonderful opening, great mods, and some terrific camera angles highlight this film's quality. Add to that scene setting music and you have a winner. This tale however suffers a bit in the plot. The searching seems endless but moves this film at a steady pace. Then it thickens into a blood red that makes it hard for this viewer to see what is, has , and what at last becomes the final outcome. Sure, the last scene sell it but I still can't tell under what colors it stands. (???) Perhaps this film is too complex for a simple viewer like me. Maybe it was just over thought, if that's possible, in it's creation. I'm not sure but I had a delightful time reaching this confusion.

This is a great Story/movie.
Fantastic job done on the wide & varied
use of scenes to create the setting of the movie.
Great job picking your VA's as well.
They all suited the Characters they played
and did a very good job at it.
Music fit well too.
Although, some of its editing/trail offs could have been a bit smoother.
Something that caught my eye was inconsistent Backgrounds used.
Sometimes it was dark & eerie then in the next shot bright blue skies.. (?)
The use of the coloured overlays worked well..,
set the tone of the Delivered lines in a unique & clever way.
The costuming was top notch too.
There was some great cam work done as well
but I'm sorry to have to say this, being Honest..,
some sloppy cam as well.
If you'd taken just a little more time on this I'm sure
the latter could have been avoided.
The Pan up of the Tower. Nice shot but the Background cut off point
was very apparent & then just Black sky..
I would let this go for younger 'Directors' but
you do have quite a reputation for being finicky
with these type things.
I'm sure you could have knocked up or used a Sky Mod to counter this.
I think I've even seen one somewhere..
The Movie moved along at a good pace & was an interesting
& entertaining watch. There was a little bit of dead time
in a few of the conversation scenes too but nothing drastically bad..
My apologies for taking so long to review ASCENSION T Man but
the things I've mentioned above WERE playing on my mind.
You've probably (Definitely) seen me give other Flicks that have
nothing on this one the Full 5 stars but being the Man you are,
& your want for Honesty in reviews, I can only hand out the 4.
I watched this Movie just Hours after you uploaded it.
Downloaded it & watched it again a day or 2 later.
This has been my 3rd viewing & those things that
I thought let it down a bit still stick in my mind.
Thanks for letting me be a part of this,
I really enjoyed playing Gen'ji.
This is definitely 1 of the more entertaining
Flicks on TMO. Good Stuff my Aussie Alien friend. :)

I'm in agreement with almost everyone else on their reviews. The plot was well written, the VO's outstanding, and the general tone and feel of the movie was excellent.

Some of the scenes dragged on a little bit for me,(some of the transaction scenes, such as the horse riding, static shots of locations, etc. I understand they were put there for pacing, but to me it slowed down the pace of the film for me at times

All in all a top notch production that deserves every star it gets.

I've said it somewhere before but you are one of my favorite storytellers on TMO. It's hard to have a layered story in such a limited time frame, but this one pulls it off.

The mods were of course, fantastic and you made excellent music choices.

A FREDTHEDUCK REVIEW

Plot: 19/20 - a very good plot, and it shows that this was originally for the fable comp, although cutting it down would have ruined it altogether.

Originality: 5/5 - Unlike anything I have ever seen on TMO before. Fantastic.

Predictabiity: 14/15 - Although parts were slighty obvious, there were few, and the death of the king at the end was a real twist, and definitely one I didn't see coming.

VOs: 14/15 - awesome VOs, as you would expect from that cast.

Custom content: 10/10 - almost everything in this was a mod! this made it look so new and appealing to the eye, and was. . .great!

Editing: 13/15 - although the editing was brilliant, I could not understand why the coloured overlays were used...and also, the fog made a couple of the scenes a little difficult to see. Other than this, editing was spot on.

Music/sfx: 9/10 - great music, it really fit the story well.

The wow factor: 9/10 - a very, very high quality movie!

TOTAL: 93% - 5 star!

"That the people, that the people are safe"

The Good:
The basic story. War has ascended upon a territory and only one man can save it.
The mods, music and overlays. Very well used.
The voices were excellent. Well read and easy to understand.
The alternate endings definetely added to the story.

The Bad:
On 2 occassions, the music stopped abruptly and left a bit of dead air.

Overall:
A good film set in medieval times. Truly much time and effort went into this production. A job well done.

Seriously, though, you managed to make me forget I was watching a TM movie. The good/evil things were a nice touch (trying not to include spoilers here), a bit confusing at first but that may just be my malfunctioning brain.
VAs did a GREAT job (Kwis made me laugh... Then again, when doesn't he?), particularly Goof, I didn't even notice the same person playing 2 roles!

Great story, great characters (I still think I preferred him with a sword through his face) and a great setting.

When I read the script I wondered how Tarison was going to fit this expansive, well developed story into the 6 to 8 min minute film format needed for the Fable 2 Competition. Turns out.. he didn't!

good thing too :)

In the end, a baby came along and a deadline missed resulted in a more developed and polished film.

Great cast that worked every part to the max.. You have to admit Kwis did one killer ol' dude there! :)
The use of the green and red overlays clearly demarked which timeline we were viewing and to me that was brilliant.
Glad to be a part of this team effort.

I love the medieval genre and I frothed at the mouth when I heard the director of classics such as Foreigner and the Gritty West was making one.

Ascention dove us straight into the action, and I mean STRAIGHT into the action and set the tone and pacing of the rest of the film. The set dressing was beautiful, absolutely flawless, and really sent us to another world, especially as the young Tohvel ventured across fair lands on his horse. As Tiger always says, the basis of creating a good periodic piece is to create a world and transport us back in time, and I can honestly say you did that with ease. You created an absolutely breathtaking world, that is Gallekin.
Now the free-cam... the free-cam was bloody brilliant, absolutely 100% spot on with pacing and the rest. The editing was really great with some cleverly selected scenes. I must say however, that at the beginning, it felt a tad bit rough as one or two scenes jumped, but that's one or two, and that's the beginning as I could see you were really starting to get into it as it went on.
One or two skyward shots (for example of the tower), showed the backdrop just cutting off to show darkness... I'm not sure if that was intentional, but a sky prop would've made it look a lot more realistic, but the world you created was already realistic.

Now the script, music and acting... what can I say, they were all spot on. The script was free-flowing and set the period, as well as the music and I must commend every actor for their brilliant perfomance, especially goofparade who pulled off not one, but two characters, and to do it so well and put a unique spin on each character is something he must be commended for. This film was a great adventure, but I must say it took me a while to fully understand the story with all the colored overlays, but I did watch it in the morning and as I watched it again, I can do nought but admire your creative intent. The story was perfect to suit the length as well, and was well executed.

Seriously, you have to delve into this again, and as far as your creative ability is concerned, you've lost absolutely nothing, but instead, you have gained Andy's 6th Star Award!

Congrats T-man! Truly well deserved and a must see, highly recommended to everybody that's up for a breathtaking adventure!

Great story with a good flowing plot that leads one through a wonderous world. The set dressings and scenes helped draw one into the story. The horse riding scenes were long but the visual effects being displayed brought more awe than boredom. The story was developed well, but being well past it's original intention(as a fable comp entry) I probably would have opted for one single storyline. The one which was cleverly brought to conclusion. Nicely done overall.

I think everyone knows that Fantasy is a hard genre to create convincingly on tmo but this really does do a good job. A meaningful story recreated using such a constraining medium says a lot for your abilities as a movie maker.

Amongst the rush of midieval films to hit TMO, this one stands in a league of it's own. The mods were very good and used really well. The music really added that adventurous feel to the movie, while calm and serene when it needed to be. Also, your vo cast selection worked to perfection. They all gave a hell of a performance. Thanks for letting me be a part of that. ;)

Very good job indeed, Tarison. Well done!

OK, decided to watch this after seeing the thread on the forum.

I suppose when new mods are released we see a glut of movies depicting them and I must say the medieval one's have been done to death. Everybody from ADMR to Andy_inc has produced movies to incorporate them and now this.

I wonder was this written for the mods or just written for its own sake. I cannot tell as like the others it's very LOTR like and the problems that have plagued the other directors remain.

All the mods in the world aren??t going to show a really epic battle or a good sword fight, ??The Movies?? just doesn??t have it. Because of this editing and camera work is needed and even then it's just not convincing enough.

As with all your work the standards are really high and every detail is taken care off based on your knowledge of this game and your directorial skill.

The movie was great for TMO, many will not even reach this level of story, character and twist, never mind the actual making of it. Really for me TMO movies have reached their peak and cannot get any better, yes there are those who will disagree but that is how I feel.

??Ascension?? is truly a great TMO movie worthy of a high place and long term success. Comparing this to others of TMO then it gets 5 stars from me, it??s just short of my ??Excellence Award?? but it??s up there in the elite bracket.

A wonderful TMO movie, well done.

A Great Film Tarison.

The Fable Competition has brough many Fanstasy Films to TMO and this is up there with the best of them, and like other Fantasy Movies, it has: Special Effects and Modding, and a story, a powerful combination and it certainly worked here.

Having been one of the few that watched each and every entry into the Fable Competition, I can say with great confidence you would've been a worthy competitor, if not the true victor.

I like the concept of overlaying colors to guide the viewer through layers stories. Though, in fantasy especially, I am a sucker for a hero. I find that having a solid hero, especially in a medium as artificial as The Movies, nearly requires a relatable character or hero type character. I think, if not on purpose, your hero is an anti-hero. This is the main complaint I have with your film, that I couldn't connect with it, because I found the central character repulsive and the wise Brigandine to be unknown and outside the originally introduced world. Thus, I think to relate to this story is hard, and that takes away the best part of the very essence of film.

If you plan to continue the series, I would try to give us someone we can latch on to, or a singular emotion that helps unify the film, and the audience. Overall, I think that is mort important than a linear or non-linear story, and even the dialog. However, your script and concept is great, well executed.

Another central part to fantasy storytelling, especially with The Movies, is the idea of "creating a world". Using mods, or whatever you want to call it, to create a world that is not our own, unique. Something that makes your fantasy the fantasy rather than a fantasy. The only film on TMO, until yours, that accomplished this was done by Rik_Vargard, however you did it as well. With tricky use of the vertical mods you've unleashed, but more importantly by maximizing filters and set dressings compounded by every detail matching in style, you created a wolrd that is your own and recognized to your film. Given a screenshot, it can act as a fingerprint, very unique, and speaking volumes about your film.

Every other aspect of the film, editing, volume, music, all is top notch and obviously the result of a lot of effort and attention to detail. It was a great film to watch, glad I caught it hot off the press.
