Film Description
Winner of Best Cinematography and Best Romance at The 2007 GAGA Awards.

Great. I love to be here. Always nice to get your films out for other members to enjoy or hate. Anyway bare with me. Mästerverk which is Swedish can be translated to Masterwork/Masterpiece (not really sure:D) in English. I am sure a lot of people out there will feel a bit confused after watching Mästerverk, which also in a way is my intention, since it is a movie that potrays a feeling more than a plot..

Mästerverk is about Ralf Duran which is a fiction character of me, and the film takes place after that he has released his latest movie, Life Through an Eye, and now has to come up with a new movie. But he wants to create and experience something that he never has seen before, and that is the journey you guys will have to follow lol. Some may not understand it, and some of you will. Anyway, I want your opinions, so bring it on.

That was beautiful. I apologise for not having checked this out sooner. This was a great tribute to your movies and showcase of your work and great film-making talents. Absoutly fantastic. I loved this. Fantastic work dude. Can't wait to see your next movie.

Hey man

Great job on this. I really liked most of the voice acting - But, yeah, the only thing that does lower this movie would be your voice acting-- that's not say it's a bad movie at all.

I can see you've done alot of work on this film. And it really is great, it's the best TMO film I've seen so far. Is it art? I don't know. But you use the angles right, you let us see the story through pictures and not only through dialogue.

And by the way. Whoever did the voice acting on the "Life through an eye" scene did a very very good job.

I dropped by to see your "masterwork" once again, and noticed I didn't rate it? Hm... My apologies to say the least, but here, belatedly, are my thoughts. I do believe you have made a film which I would mistake for a PMC film--you have captured the style, imagery, and most importantly the depth of his movies, and yet added a touch of your own visions (I loved the old west duel shootout sequence). It was a brilliant move to actually cast PMC to portray himself--no pretenses, no metaphors, just bold and unabashed homage. Delightful. I can't think of a greater compliment for a filmmaker, and don't be surprised if one day someone crafts a "masterwork" with you as their inspiration.

Oh God, this is the best, what I've ever seen. As my friend Matwey say "A minimum for maximum" - realy good description for that.
The best movie from the best TM director...
I dont have any more words for that... Only emotions.
Thank you for your films.

Cant tell if i loved or hated this film which is why it is so good. Clever portral of one mans expresio needs and the reality of how cirumstances force him to surpress these needs. I loved the end however with the solidiers surrounding the piano.. Brilliant methaphor, i would have never thought of expressing that type of feeling in that way. i would have chosen the easy way out. having the guy screaming his head of but this way is far more impactive and mesmorising. When he is hitting the soldier and the solidier isnt even reacting.. excellent.
heart of a true poet.... very clever movie making.

There are rarely movies that I see on TMO that are truly a work of art. That are so moving they make you feel for the character. This movie was that.

The movie is hard to explain, and in the breif description you give of it, that is only scratching the surface of what this movie real is. You can't put the movie in to words. It truly is powerful.

The soundtrack was amazing. The ending song summed up the power of the movie in to one final shot. The finaly shot was the truest most powerful shot I have ever seen.

It was such a simple shot. Just the man lifting the weights. Yet it is a complex shot. A powerful shot. A shot that just sums the movie up. I can't describe it much better then that.

This truly is an inspiring peice of art. You make me want to make fantastic movies now. This is a truly incredible movie. A must see for everyone who wants to see a phenomenal movie. Take a bow. This was beautiful.

An existential glimpse into the self gratification process of machinima making? An amazing journey along the roller-coaster trail of the curse of self awareness and despair...?

Don't look for the mundane here. Each scene, each shot, each sequence is an exploration of the infinite variables of that overwhelming sense of introspection, self-exploration and consciousness at its raw base. During the piece one can't help but wonder at this artist's motivations and is subsequently drawn deeper into the universe that he's created. This is not a film for the faint-hearted, for the frivolous or for the young of spirit. This amazing work is a creation of such maturity that it leaves you breathless and stunned.

The impressionistic imagery in this masterwork is evocative of the most humbling and edifying of emotions; its sweeping scope leaves you breathless with the possibilities within - not only of the film-maker's, but your own.

I found this film to be nothing less that stimulating in every single department, a creation worthy of nothing less than the highest accolades this community can offer. As a machinima maker I am humbled by this true masterwork, and by the same token, am inspired and refreshed.

Rarely do I give five stars. I only wish I could give ten.

Wow! I have seen some good movies produced by some really talented artists on here. But this film was absolutely beautiful. This film rivals 90% of the garbage passed onto us from the "professionals" in Hollywood. Keep filming, because I would love to see more like it.

An absolutely gorgeous cinematic acheivement.

What stood out the most in this film for me was...well, it was alot of things actually. I marveled at your ability to tell a beautiful story in such non-linear fashion; I admired your poetic camera-work; i felt that there was truly a meaning behind every single shot; you also have a clear understanding that silence can have just as big of an impact as the spoken word, as this film has lots of extensive scenes with no dialouge, but the cinematography is so beautiful that the viewer hardly realizes the silence.

The music was definitely fitting, and one of the highlights of this film. My favorite moment however, was the segment with PostModernChuck. That scene blew me away, Wow!

All the things that make movies great, are indeed present in Masterverk. Writing, Cam-work, Music, Directing, etc...the list goes on for quite sometime.

This film proves that you are indeed amongst the elite directors of this community; and i am now a true fan of your work. Masterverk will be bookmarked.

Fantastic film.

I wasn't sure about this movie when I read the Hotpick text. It seemed to me like your intention was simply to make not a meanigful movie, more than to reflect yourself as a meaningful person. Many artists seem to be arrogant when they talk about their art. I have the opinion that when you lose your shame about the stuff you create (mainly we talk about art now), then you reach the point where - in the context of your product of course - youself are more important than the movie. In fact, the film doesn't count anymore, if it's good or bad, it's simply that you have made it and that's why it's art.

Certainly I had this opinion and I thought I could never sit through 23 mins full of such thoughts - artists arrogance. And I actually feel shame when I write this preview, cause who I am that I would be allowed to judge about the worth of a movie and his maker?

The first minutes were strange. Critics talked about the movie, but in the same way I got a connection to Ralf. Not that I would express myself as a genius, it's actually I can understand the pressure he puts himself upon his shoulders. A pressure every moviemaker in the world and also on TMo might has.

Mästerverk is a visual stunning, epic and fabolous written journey through the mind of an artist. I got catched by the poetic monologues as well as the visual power, which don't let you go after watching. They might even follow you into your dreams. Just take the final scenes, actually you can take any scene in the movie - everyone is a lesson of filmmaking on TMo for itself. Sure: There's a big difference between making movies on TM and filmmaking in real life. But the thoughts are the same, what makes this piece of movie so worth and valuable.

To interpret this movie is really hard. Simply because this movie isn't there to be interpret. So it seems to me. You have to understand it, don't interpret. A film like this gets tortured by an excatly analysis. Others get on a higher level through a review where everything is said, this one not. It's more unliteral, than literal speaking.

I don't want to write about the production, editing, writting, the cast and the great music. I am impressed by all of them - they gave the movie something own and get together to a big something, that is rememberable and deeply impressive. In the end Ralf Duran succeed in making the film he wanted by making a film about it. Mästerverk is what its name says.

Gathering together a top of the line cast and coaxing from them some of their finest voice work wasn't enough. No, next you pressed your director to dig deep to find a unique magic to embrace an already wonderful script. But did you stop there? Of course not. The music had to fit exactly to the moment and God only knows what the modders think when they see you coming. And still it wasn't enough. Lets just shoot it in black and white to give it a feel and texture and then space dramatic pauses at key points to allow the viewers mind to take over drawing them into the film until they themselves are a part of it. I'm sure I must have missed something.... Well, It worked! AN EXCELLENT MUST SEE VISION!!!

The Archaic Awards

Story: 10/10 A wonderful story that was told very nicely! However, I felt it began to drag on and could have been shortened. A very powerful message though that makes me respect you as a director.

Music: 5/5 Music was fine. Nothing super special though.

VO/Subs: 10/10 Voiceovers were excellent!

Script: 5/5 The script was nice except for the fact that f*** was used twice for no reason.

Extras: 5/5 Great freecam and mods! They helped give the right feel of the film.

Editing: 13/15 I felt a lot of the film went on to long. I know you like to make decent sized movies, but this one could have been a few min shorter and still produce the same affect you were looking for. Scene transition was pretty good though. Keep it up!

Final Score: 48/50

Immediately after watching this film, I wondered to myself, ??What game is he playing??? Your picture was an absolute thing of beauty. As all us directors know, what we create isn??t always what we feel, envision, or produce. Often times we give in to the masses and hold back the visions that are inside of us. Whether it is for ratings or acceptance, we find it is better to give in then to allow ourselves to be vulnerable to the uninformed or unimaginative. I know I probably missed some of the symbolism in the picture but if your point was to show the confusion and doubt a creator feels about his creations, then I will take that point away with me as I continue my journey in filmmaking.

The music, editing, voice acting, and cinematography were all wonderful. You have truly created a film that will stay in this reviewers mind a very long time.

Amazing journey through the confusion of making a new film. :) I enjoyed it a lot. I need to take something for my headache now though. :) Great way to interview and be interviewed by many famous people/characters and get the grilling from others as your character explores the process of the next film to make. Great filming techniques and great audio-visual components to augment the terrific story. Great overall effect for this wonderful movie.

Oj så bra! Musiken till att börja med är underbar, perfekt val av musik. Det här måste vara en av de bästa filmerna som släppts på TMO hitilsjust för att den är så underbart vackert skriven och filmatiserad.

"To start with the music is wonderful, perfect choose. This has to be one of the best movies ever releasted on TMO so far, just because it´s so beutifuly written."

Förresten, kan du berätta för mig hur man får svart-vit bild?

Free-cam use/overlay use 5/5- One it's the number of bad freecam use I saw (at the end, you go throught a camera), I could say 0 as it was so well used.

Story/character 5/5- Is there a story? I can't tell as it was very personal. We move between "movies" and "reality". the character were well develloped.

VO/Music/sound sfx/subtitles 4.5/5- I feel that the volume of some music could be higher, but except that, it was perfect.

Editing/setdressing 5/5- Marvellous! we feel the same as the heros by the setdressing. The editing was very good too, I liked the Chapter cutting.

Enjoyment 5/5- Well, I didn't saw the 23 minutes past, I was really in it since the begining. This trip in your minds was interesting and I feel that a lot of people can identify themself to the hero.

Conclusion: I didn't expect that, honestly. I think it's the first time I watch a so personal movie on TMO. This is what can be called a Author Movie. This is not the kind of movie that everybody can enjoy, but I, I really enjoyed it. Everything was so perfectly done.

Total 24.5/25- 5 Stars Congratulations!

I give you the Masterpiece Award of Cinema!

Congradulations. You should be oozing with pride over that piece. You not only found the masterwork within you, but it has inspired me to discover my own masterwork. I was most moved by two scenes:
-The duel with PMC. I totally got the two creative artist struggling for control when all they really needed to succeed was the help of one another.
-The fight with the soldier. I'm assuming you might have had a different feeling when making it, but I was todl when seeing it that the soldier represented the gaggle of ignorant reviewers amongst TMO, and that as much as you tried, they would always win.
As cliche as this sounds, Masterverk was a master Masterwork. Brilliant!

far away from what I expected reading the presentation on Tmo.. or I should say : far beyond. Appreciated every second of it, you joined the club..the club of the directors that make me ashamed of the poor production I can propose here... I especially appreciated the freedom shown in your movie...freedom in the dialogues, in the travels beetwen fiction and reality, in the way you tell your story... I can't tell right now all the amazing ideas that I saw during this movie...just comes to my mind the movie duel between you and Chuck... the hoepless fight against the soldier...really meaningfull. Of course, logic doesn't belong to your movie...but this amazing trip doesn't need it. I just followed it, surprised by every scene, emotions I only felt in Postmodernchuck's and Sherwinliu's works (I might forget someone here... missed many movies lately)... really gratz then and see you!

Ralf you did it again!
You made a film that makes me think, that makes me feel...
your use of free cam is just beatiful, your voice actors are outstanding, the music fits perfect in every scene and your sets are dressed with perfection, details everywhere I look.
Like I said the story is full of feelings, but the story is also a bit confusing or let´s say hard to get. I watched a lot of movies on TMO, but non of them have that meaningfull storys like yours and even I didn´t get the whole story, I´m sure I will understand it after the second or the third time watching it.

That´s the speacial thing about your movies, nearly everything has a meaning! That´s what I love about them, because the meaning isn´t always easy to see but after watching your movie more than once you notic more and more details/meanings of things.
That´s the reason why I love your movies. Hopefully i haven´t repeated my self to often =)
thanks for your wonderfull movies!

No doubt, an interesting film. Full of color and unique perspective, "Masterverk" is an original look at filmmaking from the eyes of a blossoming TMO icon. The magnitude of this film is spellbinding, although it seems less of an epic masterpiece and more of a poetic journey film. Congratulations.

But it's difficult to interpret...well...any meaning from this visual collage. If it weren't for your description, I don't think I'd be able to even distinguish a purpose. Everything is too vague, too obscure, and too undefined. We think we see the wheels begin to turn when "Life Through An Eye" clips take form at the beginning, followed by a run-in with your 'producer,' but then the glue begins to dry--- and we needed stronger glue to hold the meaning intact, because in my eyes, the ideological sense just fell apart.

What are the truths? What are the half-truths? What are the utter lies? There's just far too much obscurity to make ANY of your subtle messages believable. I consider myself a somewhat intelligent person, but any essence of a point or "vital message" found a way to fly over my head. I spent the whole film squinting and [play nice now!]ing my head back, wondering "did I miss something?"

A scene that bothered me was the shootout between you and PMC. While this gained the most success in meaning, I was taken aback by the entire silliness of the scene. I know you guys don't have an ego problem, but it felt arrogant and a tad self-important to feature this inclusive...well, not quite bragging...maybe just a bit [play nice now!]y. In a comedy, this may have worked better, but in such an intrapersonal film with so much depth, it was too shallow. And it almost made me angry when PMC claimed "f*** the audience." Well, I'm the audience, and seeing a director I respect be so slanderous had me a bit perplexed.

It would be quite odd to see Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorcesse engaging in the same behavior...well, that's how it feels to us TMO common-folk.

So overall, this was a beautiful production, full of sweeping imagery and glistening with star power. But being wrapped with so much obscurity, I never quite had the "Aha!" moment of comprehension and meaning. I will always be a fan of your films, but this just didn't deliver the raw emotion and inspiration I was hoping for.

Ralf always strives to make each moment count in life and to not make movies calculated to impress the audience with "all the right stuff in it"..this much is obvious to me... that's why I like his film so much. They remind me to live..
But then that might be the only obvious thing about Masterverk, another truly personal film by ralfduran. If anyone bares their soul in film fashion it's ralf who won't print one frame that is formulaic bullsh@t..

Masterverk seems to ping-pong between his desire for self truth in his movies..balanced against his need for the "showbiz" side.."masterverk" the movie, with all the cliches any the audience would expect!

Might take 2 views to pick up all the detail and intent in Masterverk.. and I'll need to watch it again... but it was indeed brilliant.

I have to admit, I don't have a really good idea of what all went on in this film. I think that the main idea was to show what inspires you to make your films and what how you react to how people react to your films. Good Voice Acting and writing. Spot on direction. I can tell you are heavily influenced by Ingmar Bergman. Good job.
