LIONHEAD - A FAIRY TALE

My entry for the Fable competition.

Runner-Up in the Fable Competition.

Lionhead is a fairy tale about a young farmer's son who got the chance to change his life. But then he has to make a decision which will change his life forever...
(I have to admit that my movie description is pretty useless :D )

Really Captured the essence of Fable i think, the stills (which although some people evidently did not like, i thought were crucial) and the narrator sounds just like the original so well done on that, also the choice about saving the girl or not. Good use of the fable music too.
In the end i think the only thing holding it back is the small ammount of action, a little more and this would have been a 5 star easily.

For those who don't like it cause it is in stills they are pathetic they obviously can't see a good movie when they see one. And the stills were only for the intro and the finale which many medievil hero films use.

You know, some movies inspire me. This is one of them. :-) Great movie. I can see why it's a hotpick, really, I can. You put a lot of work into that. I also loved how you used the swords instead of knives. The stills with narration took a lot of work, and I applaud you for those!

Only two small, tiny, minor things:

This should've been action, but no big deal.

This should've been longer. It was good enough to capture the attention of the public for at least 15 minutes. I know that's hard to do, but I made my first long movie, of 11 minutes, and I've almost completly finished it in 2 weeks.

P.S. It's called "The Fountain of Youth". It will be released soon, and I'd appriciate if you'd watch it. TY

A difficult film to rate. In all honesty I could not bring myself to rate above 3 and a half.

The use of stills is a charming and enchanting touch, but they linger statically and unimaginatively when they could have given greater dramatic weight to the narrative by focus. This in itself shouldn't be an issue, but the stills take a third of the screen time and with the evident work put into them it would have been wonderful to see something more than a lingering shot on the page of a book. If this is a personal innovation for the director then I look forward to further works using similar albeit expanded techniques.

Given that so many technical aspects of this production are outstanding and so well crafted, I was sorely let down by a very mundane and matter-of-fact resolution that was amazingly unsatisfactory. I only say "amazingly" because the lead up promised so much and delivered so little. The narrative acting was absolutely first rate, the accompanying actors no less so. The soundtrack was beautifull and thoroughly immersive.

As a work of art the obvious care shines through like a beacon on a gloomy night. As a piece of film-craft much falters - glaringly so when one considers how much experience must be behind the director's knowledgable handiwork. Stock footage seems to be used as a stop-gap, the fight scene composition an afterthought, and conflict all too easily resolved. I so wanted more - and I'm not talking another ten minutes, just a little more care, given that so much had already passed my eyes.

There's no doubt this is a beautiful little gem, but I would love to see the director's next diamond after this emerald.

The use of stills was different but creative. Stills and backdrops were very beautiful, crisp and clear... Loved all the music for the scenes... It felt like I was watching the video game, a hero on a task; given a decision to do the right thing saving someone or return to the guild on time to complete his task/journey... Sound effects were good but I felt they lacked during the fighting scene. I felt missing swinging weapon sounds and enemy getting injured deterred the films experience just a tad but easily overlooked. Overall very well done!!!

Hello!
This movie has enchanted me. I like the introduction with screens. It's like a fable in books. You've made a great work on it. It's a pleasure to follow the narration. The rest of the movie is very good too with the voiceactors and this nicely story. Great job on the sets too.
Thank you for this enjoyable movie.
Cheers.

Very good, your VOs were brilliant as always. I found the use of the stills in the beginning and end a great way to off-set the narrative. No action to distract the focus of the telling of the back story.

Very nicely told story, Dr_House. When I first watched it, I thought the 2 min+ intro was a bit long, but now it seems quite right.

K4's narration, joseph and sisch's performances - all brilliant. (If they weren't, I'd be surprised!)

All the makings of a classic. And a great first film! Looking forward to more of your work!

Only a runner-up?!

Pros - This was equisitely well edited, written and thought out, the voice overs were done to perfection as well. I loved the feel of the movie and the general air of being read a story that it created...

Cons - Perhaps the introduction was too long, would it not have been possible to have some none-still parts to the intro?! I don't personally know if that would have worked if you chopped and changed between still and motion in the introduction, but if you were going to stick with it being still then the introduction should have been shorter.

What else to say ... erm, well ... there wasn't very much wrong with this at all in all honesty and I genuinely enjoyed watching it for all the cheesiness of the storyline, it was still a exceptional movie. Splitting hairs I would say this was a 4.75*'s out of 5. Congrats.

This was a nicely constructed stylized tale that conveyed the themes of the competition in an original fashion. The voice acting was superb. I liked the still sequences used as bookends around the middle video center. Jeez, I am making this sound like an Oreo:-)

Die Vorgeschichte (und auch das Ende) in Bildern hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Soetwas ähnliches habe ich mit anderen in Form eines Englisch-Schulprojektes auch gemacht... "Something different" kam ziemlich gut an. :-)

Die Story im Gro?en und Ganzen ist zwar sehr kitschig und auch eher kurz gehalten, aber dennoch Ok.
Insgesamt bekommt dieser Film knappe 5 Sterne aufgrund des Stils am Anfang und Ende. :-)

Very entertaining flick that held my attention with it's imaginative story telling both narrative and visual. I like the touches of humor and the voices were great. The stills worked really well for and supported the excellent narrative completely.

A rereshing style change and a well executed movie.

This is HONESTLY a great movie. I felt a little let down that Lionhead's TRUE heroism and sacrifice needed bolstering to earn his title, but in the end, it was Lionhead's nobility which ultimately earned him his praise and gallantry.

I love the use of the Overlays to create the endcaps of this film and to make the movie seem more "storybook." Dr. House's first flick is TRULY an event that lives up to the anticipation.

Very original and smart technique. The still, fariy tale like shots were very effective in telling your story and seemed to add to the overall value of the film. Although you had some trouble with editing, I won't count that against you because this is your first film. A movie-making virgin you are no more!

Very nice story. Too bad there wasn't a way to move the camera on the stills like a Ken Burns style. But the fairy tale story is awesome. :)

Posted on July 2, 2007
- Ranedthel

A delight of a tale and a wonderful cast. This story is presented in a very simple and straight forward format that is easy to follow and understand. The still shots were a fine feature to this movie and gave it a storybook feel. They did seem to dominate the film leaving little for your acting talent to do. They also, I felt, took the "move" out of movie. A wonderful narrator carries this story and the sets and music serve to highlight his read. Altogether a splended film that I hope will get a lot of attention and inspire other studios in their future projects.

Not bad, a few little things got on my nerves though. The initial introduction was very long and took up half the movie, seemed a bit excessive.

Also the story was a bit simplistic, I like it when you're not entirely sure whats coming.

But other than that it was v nice, good modding, editing and all that stuff.

bravo :)

My only gripe I guess is the weapon change from sword to knife by the bag guy during the fight, this editing and costume mix up cost this Movie a Little but still is an Excellent Feature! The Camera work and still shots are PERFECT for EVERY SCENE and keep in PERFECT time as this Movies story is being told and Performed! The costumes are PERFECT and hold to this Movies Genre!

A simple, yet charming fairy tale that wallows in a perfect median between corny and dull. The story is recited with ease and perfection by the great k4, while jkw and sisch deliver a one-two climactic punch. The picturebook prologue and epilogue was a marvelous touch, giving me a warm, nostalgic feelig of childhood.

A solid first film from a man who has already done so much for TMO!

This one scrapes a 4. The story was very slight, and I thought the picturebook introduction was too long for a film lasting just short of 7 minutes.

As a morality play, I'm not sure. The "hero" was left with 2 choices - pass his "hero" exam by running away from the damsel in distress (an action that would surely make that qualification not worth the paper it's written on) or do what heroes are supposed to do - and then go home a failure. Let's just say the ending was a cop-out (I can say no more than that without giving it away).

The music worked, the choice of shots for the picturebook were very good and the narrator did a good job. So some nice things to admire here as well.

A truly amazing debut, Doc! Where have you been hiding your talent all these months?

A simple enough story, but told very well - at first I thought you were pulling a Moby Dick with the images and narration, but you were just setting things up for the action. Great camera work, some excellent voice work from the always reliable K4, Joseph, and Sisch, and good use of the fable music.

This is definitely the competition movie to beat - and a movie you can really be proud of!

Feature Commment: This is our very first review in months. The movie description and your promotion through the forums prompted us to come watch your movie. We enjoyed it so much we decided to get back into reviewing and look into what TMO has to offer these days.

Genre Feeling:
87%
A good score, given the fact that it was quite difficult to determine what genre it should be in. Seeing as it is a type of fantasy movie, it may have easily gone into the science fiction genre. It had its action and it built up to the end fight, it could also be considered action. But, Romance can also be considered as the right genre, so points to you.

Movie Quality:

Everything ends up coming down to this section of our review. Your movie shone thourhg this section, and rightly so. Its introduction may have possibly been the most captivating we've seen, even back since January 2006. We tend to find that if the introduction to the film fails to capture your attention and interest, you will not be motivated to continue the movie. This movie, however, had us glued to the screen since the very beginning. A quality introdution.
Once it was no longer stills and it became real time moving, we noticed smart usage of free cam. Subtle, yet extremely effective. What surprised us most, was the fact that this was your first movie. It didn't have the new-moviemaker style mistakes that you would normally see. Overall, excellent movie quality. Quite far above average.

Dr_House Studio Report:

There isn't much to report seeing as this is your very first movie made on The Movies Online. Seeing it's excellent quality, kudos have to be given to you for a job very well done. We hope to see you continue to make movies. If you began your movie-making career with a movie of this quality, we can only see you improving.

i found it like a childrens story book of fantasy, a exstremely happy theme from start to finish, well edited. The narating all through spoiled it a bit for me, too many films with constant narating all the way through. good props and stuff, it just misses a 5 star in my review. A first comp film ive seen with a story line in some time. A little more excitement and maybe a deeper story plot and it would have been superb.

Storybook meets The Movies

The Good:
The storybook type intro and ending were a nice touch. They added some atmosphere to the story.
Excellent V.O.'s, especially the narration.
Good use of free-cam and overlays.
The music complimented the story well.

The Bad:
I felt the sound effects could have been better, especially during the fight scene.

Overall:
For a first movie, this was rather good. Good work.

First film? Damn, you're good. Wonderful job on the narration gave it that perfect fairy tale feeling, and like all good fairy tales it should appeal to all age groups. Simple isn't always bad, this is a case in point.

I think i have diabetes after watching that, it was Disney sickly sweet. Great editing and VOs with interesting use of overlays/backdrops.

Although I was already familiar with the script, your vision and style elevated this to such a magical experience that, for the few minutes this film lasted, I was actually drawn into the film and lived the adventure. This is what good filmmaking is all about; the suspension of disbelief and the immersion into the tale. The opening static shots worked well (especially with that brilliant performance by K4 as the narrator). The music was also used to great effect. I also had no idea you would actually animate the mouse which I threw into the script--that was brilliantly done. I loved this, and wish you the best of luck in the competition (although I doubt you'll need it). Dr. House, YOU are my hero :)

I liked much the kind of paintings or illustred book that is in the heart of your "movie" (it's almost no more a movie !) during the introduction, very original. The tale is classical but well written and well told, liked it ! Good use of musics too. My rating is 4,75. Good luck for the Fable competition !

It's a beautifull tale. Sometimes I had a little problem with the tempo/cutting, but great VOs and very nice setdressing. Really liked the whole ambient. The story is somewhat "simple" but straight to the point.
And since you managed to suck me into this tale, you got your 5 stars.
Great job! Good luck with the competition! :)

Wonderful and magical with all the hallmarks of a great fairy tale! Beautiful work here in presentation and execution. I loved the old story book device that bookends the action. That was risky but paid off in creating an even more authentic feel of a fairy tale. Wondrous voice work by K4, Sisch, and
JosephKw. This is where the story really wins in it's casting of some of the top voice talent at TMO. Oh and the writing! A great job there in a shimmering screenplay. Loved it! Bravo!

Brilliant but one query:

Why have you waited so long to show us your movie making skills!

For this was definitely a well put together movie, held together with great mods, music and voice overs. The narration and still frames really gave it that fairy tale atmosphere, great work there.

The bit where you showed the different outcomes also worked well, especially through the use of that basic, yet effective filter that, while not looking too cartoony, gave the intended style. This bit did seem a bit contrived, but not enough to detract from the overall charm of the movie.

The music really suited the flow of the movie at all points. Another thing that helped the movie along were the well edited overlays, as I said before. Also, the Voice Overs were outstanding. They were always clear and never confusing. Their distinctive personalities were very fitting for the genre and almost resembled other fairy tale/adventures, like "Shrek" and, to a certain extent, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2006), in terms of the deap pitch of the narration.

As always, the mods were more than up to scratch, they were amazing and matched my preconceptions, but then again, I think that we (the community) have come to expect that of you.

Definitely a favourite in this competition: a masterfully made movie and a worthy Five Stars from start to finish. Well done, hope to see more from you soon Dr. House.

Hey, am I the first? :)

Wonderful, fairytale like story! I loved the story, the overlays, the music fitted wonderfully to this tale of honour and bravery!
K4 did a wonderful narrator, and Joseph a great hero!
Great freecam style too!
Good luck for the competition! :)
