Film Description
Horribly voiced, barely recognizable approximations of Chrysler Competition characters are spoofed in this madcap romp!

A side note: I watched this on a lower end PC today and man is it dark. A few of the visual gags are lost unless you have a decent video card.

"Tragedy plus time equals comedy" - Famous Quote - Of Unknown Origin

A little over a year ago there was a movie competition with a car as the grand prize. 9 other semi-finalists won $1,000.

Others, me included didn't win any money but came out of it with a friend or two. Some of the contestants were well known on TMO at the time. Others were new and drawn to TMO by the competition. Some stayed and made more movies. For others, the competition was the last time they were seen on TMO.

Suffice to say, emotions ran high. I mean come on; there was a car at stake! The reviews at times, were harsh. This was all despite the fact the fan voting had nothing whatsoever to do with the selection of the final winners. While it might have not been a tragedy for the losers, at the time it was tough to swallow as hope turned to rejection, rejection turned to depression and depression turned into 3 months of intensive therapy...just kidding, really.

Anyway, time does heal all wounds.

Shortly after the competition I started making a little parody about it. Other projects intervened and I shelved it at times but kept going back. I recently decided it had too many good gags in it that I just couldn't use in other movies so I set out to finish it. It seems there only a few people around who will appreciate all the inside jokes but there is still a lot of content that will stand on it's own.

Going with the theory that if I mock myself, nobody else can really take offense when they are targeted, I revised and expanded my script. In retrospect I feel the final product resembles a film version of a Mad magazine movie parody. I hope all those who's characters are depicted can laugh at themselves a little. In reality the movies that are the easiest to parody are those that stand out because they are the most interesting. (To me at least)

Very nice, thanks for e-mailing me. I'm one of the ones who kinda disappeared after the contest. I played the expansion a little, then I got sucked into WoW. This has inspired me to take another turn behind the camera, though.

I actually laughed out loud at the "Driven" part, and I NEVER laugh out loud at movies I see here. Props to you, sir.

Wow, that takes a guy back. I have to agree with JosephKw on the Driven parody. Nice! I love the Buck Jackson appearance as well. Lesson one - Drama stings rock! For additional lessons in movie making, see lesson one. (Lesson one on writing lists of lessons - always revert to lesson one in subsequent lessons. Lesson two...) I always meant to do more with that guy, but never got around to it. Was waiting for the expansion, then a new comp, then I lost the disk. Tragic world. I have to admit, I've probably forgotten a lot of the specifics of the movies in the comp so maybe I didn't get all the jokes, but I remembered enough to make it worthwhile. Pretty darn funny, and a wild competition.

The Competition Caper
by nahton

Opening Statement

I enjoyed this movie. It brought back a lot of memories from the contest. The best part was the leading actor, the filmmaker himself.
The dialogue was very funny and intelligent. I could feel his frustration about the contest.
The set designs were good but they could have used a bit of overhaul. With the exception of the moving car scene with the bridge in the background. That was great.

Boredom factor
It drug in spots.
90%

Although this movie started out on a high note with lots of laughs, it could have used a bit of cutting here and there. A suggestion is to cut, cut, cut so that your scenes really snap one from the other. Walking scenes can be boring - limit them to a few seconds. Fight scenes also were drug out a bit more than I liked and made the wait between the opening lines and the punchline too long. The best part of the movie is the dialogue and that should again be very fast moving - having too many action intervals slows the film down too much.
More sets should have been used to make the snips of the represented movies more like the original movies.

Acting/Subtitles
Beautiful
100%

Excellent actors in all the scenes.

Technicalities
90%

Most scenes were too dark and there was not enough variation in the lighting. The sound files had problems - a lot of hissing. The music was just the Movies music but thinking about it, this was a movie about TMO so it is appropriate to use only the Movies music.

10% - 30% 1 star, in need of huge improvement.
31%-50% 2 stars, not bad, could do better.
51%-70% 3 stars, good, alright, always room for improvement.
71%-90% 4 stars, close to amazing. Excellent work.
91%-100% 5 stars, astonishing job, perfect.

Final Report:

93.3%

A fun and clever movie.

Never underestimate the power of a good bunny movie...;) The competition was before my time but I enjoyed the parodies you provided. Faster...faster... & when that corporation guy started "thinking"(use that word VERY loosely) I started to get worried for the guy. Outsource...lol...Good job.

I have to agree with Biggstrek that this really captured the essence of so many of those competition entries. It really does bring back memories (I need to return to therapy now!). I liked the parody of "Driven" the best LOL. I'm glad you decided to release this even after all this time. It may not receive a ton of reviews because of the subject matter (and that this is a long, long comedy), but for those of us who went through this, it is a sheer joy to watch, reminisce, and laugh.

lol... this really brings back some memories! Seriously thought of doing the same thing myself after that particular competition ended.

K.T. and Poita - what can I say? Love the way you combined the two films, then ended them. Funny stuff! And the Marsall sequence was great, too. Especially the sly comment at the end...

And the outsourcing joke, too, gave me a good laugh. I can relate to that one...

It's just a pity you didn't release this about 12 months ago! Then more people would be able to appreciate the jokes a bit better.

Only one thing more I need to say: CORPORATE BUTT KISSER! lol :)
