Film Description
"INSTINCT" was nominated for

Alien meets Agatha Christy, sort of...
Jeff wakes up in a spaceship corridor with a headache
and a big gap where his memory used to be.
And someone or something is eating his fellow crewmates.

With the incredible Voice Talents of:

Jazzx, Dulci, Sisch, Myshinator, MildHeadWound,
Sailorknightwing, Lizard3209, Riott007, Biggstrek

This is NOT a fast paced action packed movie,

Visually this film was incredible - the opening shot alone had me stunned - with excellent camera work, and THAT "very short but very cool special effects shot", all of it had me thinkin "how the hell did they do that?!?!"
What for me let it down was that I found the storyline a bit predictable and overlong, and dare I say cliched. I really couldn't believe Jeff didn't figure out what was going on halfway through the film!
I also have to agree with previous comments that the voice acting of Jeff was another weakness, and it has nothing at all to do with the fact he was voiced by JazzX who unfairly slagged off one of my movies. Nope, nothin at all... hehehe...
Anyway, very stylish on a visual level, and even though I felt the storyline was weak, top marks for the presentation.

Visually, it was absolutely stunning and the voice actors were good but as previously said by JD573, Jeff let it down. Whoever spoke his lines didn't sound like they were trying and his whole performance sounded a bit monotonous... Apart from that, well done!

this movie was very well written and the voice actors were well cast except for the guy who played Jeff. many of his lines seemed unnecessary (not to mention he pronounced Niamh's name wrong). but the story was very well done and i loved the twist.

Wow, that was absolutely incredible. You created a great dark atmosphere (which reminds to Alien) with a sense of humor ("Cool!"-"That's the idea") and some nice surprises. Professionell VOs, fantastic camera work, a well worked out story...I really don't know any reason why somebody shouldn't give you the 5 Stars.

Instinct is an incredible view of our race in the future. This movie scared us to death in a cool way. This action horror film had a sense of humor here and there. But, not as much as all the time.

Throwaxe delivers a cool, funny, sci-fi thriller. This ominous piece is aided by the eerie soundtrack to create the suspenseful, chilling atmosphere. The storyline helps keep the audience on edge. Too true people will never learn to not split-up. Excellent cinematography for a movie that is confined to a single vessel to help create the feel of being on board a large ship. The voice actors were superb.

Well done.

Excellent stuff TA. The ominous, opening scene sucks you in immediately, helped by some great mood music and freecam work. I loved the costumes, and I'm glad you included lots of lingering thigh shots ;o)
In these situations, I'm always amazed when they insist on wandering off on their own - you just know it's going to end in disaster. (I think I would insist on groups of six!). You had an excellent narrative, which was delivered by some great VAs, I enjoyed it very much.
PS - I'm glad they met him half-way at the end, and changed back to human form for him - and what a great closing tag line too! :o)

I liked it well enough. the setting, scenes, and Voiceovers, brilliant. however, the plot was lacking, in that there's no way we'd get this story, since it was all aliens and an alien controlled computer. The initial "hold me" gave away the plot, far too early. I'd liked to have seen jeff fight for his life, set the reactor to explode, open an airlock door.. something rather than just okay, well I guess I'm done for, let's get to it. The Greenpeace / PETA speech was just way overdone, and again, too on the nose. But overall, it was entertaining, great SFX, all the same.

Oddly enough, Jeff was the luckiest and unluckiest man alive. Though, what man wouldn't want to go out by having a handful of Hot Alien Women gang-rape him? Sign me up for that vessel.

Overall, great movie, well paced writing, and fantastic free-cam use. Wish i could have seen this one sooner, however, i will bookmark it.

This was very exceptional work. I loved the way you did your film credits, your freecam flowed effortlessly throughout the film, the VO's were great (especially Jeffs), and the morphing scene was a treat to watch. I did enjoy the pace of the film, slow but never too slow, I felt it was just right. My only mild complaint is that the protagonists' reponse to the danger was a bit slower than expected. But these are minor compared to the complete film. Great job!! I look forward to seeing more from you.

A heck of a fun sci-fi "thriller" (a bit slow to call it that, but it's the only word I can think of at the moment). It takes its time establishing the characters and plot wonderfully -- using music, camera angles, and sets to their full effect. The production value here is also outstanding. Great work on the custom titles, use of costumes, and seamless camera-work. And the one effects shot worked exceptionally well!

There is one area that I did find a little flawed here though... Believability wears a little thin. Not with the concept or overall story-arc; but with the dialog, and occasionally the delivery. At times, the characters were reacting a little too easy-going -- understandable for the females, though I might argue they ought to have been acting it up in the presence of the males.

So... a low-to-mid 5 star rating. A good film -- I had fun watching it!

Even though this movie is a little long and drawn out it tells a wonderful tale and is quite a delight to watch. Most of the acting is done pretty well but there are some lines that fall flat which gives this film a bit of a corny "B" movie charm. This feature is not an overpowering special effects presentation nor does it jump of cringe. The story, although simple, is crafted with style and humor and will delight most viewers. Nice work Throwaxe, nice work!

Captivating !, this is a TMO master piece. The editing is so very good, so was the voice over acting, the special effets, the use of music and of course your very very good sript and story. Bravo ! Film bookmarkerd.

Top Notch!

where do I begin? I Would have to say the Story was this film's best attribute because of the length you have to have a good story to keep the viewer intereste; you did this without flaw. VOs were nothing short or perfect every word was clear and had emotion. Music selection was great i found myself nodding my head at one moment and really went with the flow of the movie. Camera use was great although i thought this film didnt need all the booty shots to keep people watching.

N/A! I can't think of anything bad to say about this film if i had an award to give out you would get it!

- Polymeron

I have to say, it's quite difficult for me to rate this movie.

On the one hand, the production is very good. Camera use, music and sound management, generally very good VOs, smart use of sets... all of these contributed to the movie being good. I also liked the whole sameness motif to the characters' clothing and hair, which gave a certain futuristic feel.
That said, a lot of things bothered me during it. The characters' reactions in the exposition are not believable at all, and the dialogue is no less far-fetched - though it very much improves by the middle of the film. The characters' motives for acting the way they did are not entirely clear even after the movie ends, and while it's playing they're nigh incomprehensible. Also, the choice of customes and camera angles, along with some of the scripting and dialogue, seemed needlessly provocative. As for pacing: While you seem to acknowledge that the pacing is slow, it is at certain points too slow, detracting from the believability. At others, despite slow pacing, we get little or no insight about the characters. So that still needs work.
Lastly, you seem to have had some point you wanted to make, but it came out vague rather than pointed. The film didn't seem to sit well as a whole, mainly because the glue that pieces scenes togethr - good dialogue - was too loose.

Like I said, the movie is difficult to rate. The concept is interesting and the production shows a lot of effort and ability. For that, it deserves 5 stars... Except that occasional plot holes and bad dialogue take away a lot of flavor for me. I'd like to see these cinematic abilities put to better use with a tighter script.

Exceptionally well executed opening scene. I presume the credits were custom overlays? Great editing work did much to add to the atmosphere of this movie, which also made good use of sound, although I did find the main characters voice a little out of place (a bit slow and never quite serious enough for my liking), and the camera clicks of the computer a little over-used (although the computer viewpoint was a nice touch).
Overall the flaws were minor, and I don't think a four would do this film justice, so I'll give it one of my exceptionally rare fives! Nice work. :)

...Oh...and the ending did make me chuckle, although I think Jeff could have reached his conclusions a little earlier to shorten the film to a more desireable length as it was tempting to stop watching once the credits started rolling...

Still pretty dam good tho ;)

Yes it was very very good but it felt like you were watching a porno movie because the camera kept looking at their asses, But the sets were good and so was the story, But the aliens should have got their asses kicked when they pulled out some Heavy Weapons. It was a strange thing with white hair as well and the same clothes, Like they were clones. Apart from that yeah, it was well nice.

I like (murder) mysteries and this was a great who/what dunnit. There were some genuine suspenseful moments in this movie, enhanced by the hypnotic music. VO cast was excellent, as was the impressive use of freecam and all the special effects.
Jeff kept a level head throughout which made me laugh, sort of British stiff upper lip type thing. I liked the ending...(not going to say why because I don't want to give away anything, but.. it was very good) :-D

A remarkable sci-fi thriller!!

THE GOOD: My oh my has Throwaxe created a classic! The story is reminiscent of the classic Psirens tale, mixed with a horror mystery. The story flow was just so dreamlike with elegant cinematography. The opening titles and that amazing transformation shot left us in amazement. The acting by Jazzx and crew gave such a very professional and believable performance. Love the pan shot reveling Imogen, scary moment!!

THE BAD: Some of the scenes could have been a bit tighter and some dialog polishing was needed at some points, but no big deal.

Overall a disturbing, sci-fi mystery tale that is very entertaining! Just goes to show you that you can make a film about those who play with their food!

I have a Space track now going through my head (The female of the species is more deadly than the male) and this movie more than proves the point.
At times deliberately slow placed this combined with the John Carpenteresque music created a tension which was much cleverer than the average movie. The cast all delivered excellent performances and your freecam was some of the best I've seen. I have pictures in my head of a prize sausage being consumed at the end which may or may not have been my imagination. This leads the real clever feature and thats the fear is within our minds throughout as we don't see any murders. This reminded me of a more classical period horror/sci fi movie.

This felt, how do I say this, like a perfectly executed proof of concept. Meaning, if you were "pitching" this as a feature, and used this, or cut a shorter version of it, any Studio, would get all frothy over it, if they wanted to make a smart Sci-Fi thriller that has a scent of well woven fear mixed with a clever story. You did a Sci-Fi film with zero of the typical nonsense. Its shot well, lit well, and the "effect" was worth 3 rewinds to see again.

After seeing it, and looking at my work, I feel like a 1st grader who walked in on a college History class. Wow.

The ONLY critic I can offer is it fell apart for me with the ending. I would have cut it and went to black after either the change, or left it wide open with what happened with a shot matching the opening. Up until the last few moments, it was truly one of the most mesmerizing short films I have seen here, and some I have seen in the real world.

Just my humble thoughts. Still worth all 5 stars

A real murder mystery story set in a futuristic setting. I liked that a lot. Although at a certain point I've seen how the movie would end, it was truly entertaining and very enjoyable to watch. In the beginning it was going to be something like a game by the computer, well, somehow I guess I've been right.

The direction was fine, although the cut could have been a bit more detailfull. Instinct has some very good points I liked a lot. For example that everybody has blonde hair or there are the same sets used and used again, but still don't annony me. There could have been a bit more music, sometimes it was a bit too quiet. The VO have been very good, but sometimes I thought they were a bit emotionless, they took it all very cool I'd say.

Worth to watch definitley.

I was quite impressed with the production quality of the film, particularly the
cinematography and the pacing. The tranformation FX work was top notch.
The music, used sporadicaly as it was, enhanced the creepy atmosphere on the ship without making it feel cheesy.

Great voice cast led by JazzX, and a nice little touch of humor at the end there.

I was diggin' it!

The Good:

Great intro and outro credit sequences, a superb story (that at a first, casual glance, appears entirely unoriginal - it certainly redeems itself by the end), suspense, drama, wonderful pacing, outstanding freecam, maximized use of the chosen sets, stellar music choices to build and maintain that wonderfully creepy, sinister vibe throughout, that AMAZING alien-to-human transformation sequence, the lines at 12:47 (very very funny and clever writing, there), and of course, the line, "I'm sorry, Jeff, I can't do that" - for those who don't recognize that line, you missed out on a piece of film history a while back...

The Bad:

Gratuitous and unnecessary butt shots, a few clunkily delivered lines (NEVER from Jazzx, who shines, as usual), a couple of plot leaps (the quick assumption that whatever is killing folks on the ship is "a bug with big teeth", only "acting on instinct", etc., when no one has even laid eyes on it or has a clue what's doing the killing)...

Nothing whatsoever worth less than five stars, though. This deserves every one of them.

Outstanding work, Throw!

Always a fan,

Permeating with its rich, layered atmosphere and featuring many genuinely creepy moments, Instinct works well as a serious scifi-horror film, and yet throws several monkey wrenches into the equation: ironic one-liners, tangents on human nature, some softcore cheesecake to bring the story's psychosexual element to the forefront, and so forth. The movie takes several desultory elements from cinema and makes them into a delicious milkshake of cinematic wonders and populist kitsch, mixing high and low, scary creature effects with gratuitous butt-shots, philosophy with sexual comedy. Few films could balance these disparate elements so well, and yet Throwaxe is worthy of the juggling act that goes on throughout the film, never dipping his hand into parody and taking the material head on with great results. Aided by menacing, labourously slow crane shots of the ship, a genuine sense of terror pervades throughout the film, probing us right up to the surprising twist ending -- and beyond.

JazzX is, as always, a phenomenal actor, and his being paired once more with the always brilliant Dulci makes for some of the greatest back-and-forths in TMO. The dynamic between those characters was great to watch, right up to the darkly comic ending.

This is great stuff, Throwaxe. I loved it.

In your description you say this movie isn't fast but slow. Well sometimes a slow movie is better then a fast shoot em up movie (which is most movies on TMO now a days). You sat down and toke the time to create an excellent plot with very good characters which most TMOers lack to do. The twists and turns in this movie threw me so off guard at moments that I was just mindboggeled. Great job with this movie. I saw the trailer and always wanted to know what it would be about. A really good, enjoyable sci-fi. It defiantly took me into another world, it was a lot like Alien, but more straight to the point and the plot was quite mysterious at first, a well developed story, also with the characters. I loved the way how you looked back at how the murders came to be, a very good twist in the tale. I loved the way you shot this movie, you are truly a master of free-cam. I felt that you used a lot of good effects in this movie, like the lizard skin, also the overlays were very inventive and used well.
The voice-over cast was very impressive, it helped me enjoy the film a how lot more!! The music was excellent and well chosen. This movie was very well edited and had a good pace!

it indeed begins like a s-f horror blockbuster during the introduction...and then we follow your caracter patiently in the corridors, in the bridge... withour loosing one of those so well written words! The dialogues are indeed very very well written, and slowly shows the irony in which your movie ends. I'm quite impressed by the way you wrote the whole story...
There is in fact an amazing special effect in your movie in one scene...but the moment I'll remember and keep appreciate for a long time is the way you treat your revelation about the feminine crew happening after 15min30..simply amazingly surprising, and funny (hard to mix the 2 things)!
it resumes all your movie and its qualities.

Well well. not bad at all. Some story, killer race, memory loss, not much storyline really needed, this type of film i like. Only draw back was too much focus on the lower regions. Interesting and well directed. Very clever editing and scene selection made for a realistic and entertaining movie experience. St first it felt similar to my The Titan Chronicles, but it evolved into so much more. Sich's role as the main computer gave a very 'HAL' from 2001 feeling, a creepy neutrality about it. The use of darkness for the whole movie gave a claustrophobic feeling that was hard to escape. Nice work.

Ah, how I was anticipating this movie! And it has delivered on every aspect! Your camera work is fantastic, never before has a spaceship seemed so huge and empty to me.. the music filled those haunted corridors to perfection, letting them appear even more empty and haunted, and the cast was wonderful! I loved the special effect (how did you do that?!?), the titles and of course the ending.. I just loved how you build up the tension slowly here!

Great work!!

Posted on March 10, 2007

A unique mix of atmospheric scifi, a who-done-it mystery, HAL reincarnated as Sisch??s Natasha, and scantily-clad women. What could seem incompatible at first turns out to be one of the most entertaining pieces of TMO movie pop art I have ever seen. A stellar cast and an intriguing story makes our time entirely worth it, and whoever starts this movie is bound to be hooked until the end. And trust me, you want to watch every second of it.

I kind of lost my appetite after this.

Very nice film. I will admit it was a tad bit slow for my liking, but it still worked. Also, I like a few other watchers admit to figuring out what was going on a ways before the end, but the ending still surprised me. Great job!

What a wonderful dark and deep Sci-Fi with a Devlish Comedy Twist!! I thought the VA's did a fantastic job with the characters and the plot was highly original and I often found myself chuckling along. The ending was great and my favourite moment was when Imogen said..."I'm still Hungry!!" Classic!

Overall a Highly Enjoyable Sci-Fi that is worthy of success and praise!

In the base of our skulls, lies the reptillian brain, that makes us behave with unrefined, and unrepentant, visceral instinct. And no matter how many books you read, hours you meditate, or days you lobotomize via television, you're never gonna obstruct the funnel between your mind and body. But then, who'd really wanna!? Because lizard technique is oh so fun, as witnessed in this oblivious account of xXxenophobophilia in the most outer rings of human libido. Okay, maybe human is a little strong. But some seriously strong performancesby all, (except mildheadwound, who's acting was tantamount to crapola!), and paced to perfection. Also, the scope of the technical aspects, were both refined, as in the smooth, yet clausterphobic, camera work, as well as innovative, in a scene hinted at, but best left be unmentioned. The mounting tension interplayed well with the laughs and culminated right on target in the final scenes, leaving us shuttering, with but one simple question; what is imogen's phone number?

Delightful, Brilliant, Fantastic... words I like to use when referring to myself. And in this case, this movie as well!

Fantastic story, particularly well executed. Terrific Vos (Matt should get an Oscar for that ;) - all suited perfectly to each character.

The freecam use was outstanding, the overlays for the titles (and that dissovle?) were incredible.

And for 21 mins, it went by super fast, leaving me wanting even more!

(And don't forget the humour in this film... not too much, but placed so well.)

This was one of the most amazing films I've seen on TMO so far! It has a very clever title too, as it is in our Instinct to be terribly lustful, which is a punishment in the story.

Everything was brilliant about this movie! The FX, no matter how short they were! The story, as it must've taking you a very long time to write it! The music, as it was beautiful, yet distilling! The inspiration, from other stories like Alien, Agatha Christie, and 2001! But I couldn't forget the stars, like Dulci and Sisch, who sound very, very saucy!

This was a clever, mindbending Sci-fi thriller which will be extremely successful and will definately win awards, and become an unforgetable, disturbing classic!!!

The technical part was perfect! Editing (I still don't understand how you did some shots as the live transformation of the woman), voice were clear and well said. The music was very good and the story intriguing. the 21 minutes were fast even if the rythm was slow lol.
Bookmarked movie, studio and movie download to my computer!!

PS: Can you PM me to give me the links of your music? I really loved them!
