Film Description
A dramatic thriller (not an action film). Full VO's, & English Subtitles

~~~PLEASE DO NOT GIVE AWAY THE ENDING WHEN LEAVING REVIEWS. THANKS.~~~
Production Notes: Some viewers of my previous films requested that I included subtitles to make my stories more accessible (since my films are usually dialogue-intensive). So, this is my first major production to do so. Let me know if they do more harm than good. This first installment is an introduction of the characters, and a "who dunnit".
Visually, I experimented with the camera shots. Every scene has been composed with emphasis on the vertical and horizontal lines, yet purposely misaligning the subjects off center. I even elongated buildings in backdrops to accentuate the effect. I hoped to give the scenes an organized, structured feel, but still hinting at something amiss; which is what the theme of this film is all about (the second installment will focus upon the movie's central theme of structure v spontaneity).
Musically I wanted something different. I initially was aiming for Alternative Rock songs, but I feared the vocals would distract from the dialogue. So in the end I opted for Techno. I was striving for creating two different tones between the two scenes in the film. The office is static and silent. The road is in motion, filled with the sounds of chaos. Law and disorder.
My thanks to my cast...
PostModernChuck as Aaron
Another_New_Dawn as Chief Andy
Jason Mabry as Officer Tim
Bezzer36 as Newscaster 1
Nettie Coronado as Newscaster 2
I did the voices for John and
Detective Les Stockholm
I also included Dulci in the credits although her performance is in the next installment. I made some errors in my end credits; the main title and end credit theme was by Edgen (a last second change), but Balok's and Milkman_Dan's music will definitely be used in the next installment.
Finally, a word of thanks to NeoNoir1x for that stunning poster, and to Dafoso for the "FATED" signature banner.
At first glance, Joseph Kwong's "Fated" seems to be going through the motions of a suspenseful little psychological thriller where we, the viewers, are asked to plummet into the minds of a serial killer and the obsessive detective devoted to bringing him to justice. But a closer look reveals something much darker and perhaps more mystical pulsing beneath the surface. Instead of relying on the predetermined nature of this sort of "been-there-done-that" narrative, JosephKW takes these genre conventions and subverts them to his liking, turning what could be a very simplistic story into yet another TMO masterwork where the director is allowed to explore his common themes of spirituality and alienation. Not since Unfinished have I seen the director delving into the heady territory that has made him famous, and although we are only given a small hint of the mind-bending goodness yet to come, it is enough to sustain us until part two.
As for the writing and directing, Joseph is once again at the top of his game. Visually, the movie explodes with the director's usual flair for customized backdrop use and extensive set dressing, giving us a true impression of "being there." Cinematographically taut, well edited, and cross-cut to perfection, the movie is a treat to look at. The writing, too, is great stuff, the script often alluding to the many treats the director has in store for us later.
As far as "flaws" go, it's tough and mostly overly subjective. Like parts of Quietus II, I felt some of the humorous asides were a bit overdone and unneeded (the donut-obsessed cop was a little hard to swallow, for instance), and the crosscutting between killer and cop may have been a tad on the manipulative side (albeit very very well handled).
I also found it interesting that the director's trademark SFX wizardry was absent. I think it's a testament to his talent that such things were unneeded to make this movie rock-and-roll.
Conclusion? I'm hooked. I can't wait for part two.
This story grips you from the opening credits and leaves you guessing where it is going. The two alternating settings and characters are effectively used to drive the story in a most creative way. The characters were true to life and the use of humor underlying the mounting suspense added to the depth of the storytelling.
The custom effects are outstanding but good movie making is about telling a story and Josephkw once again has proven he is one of the best at this craft.
Wow! This is every bit as good as I imagined it, no, it is better.. and believe me, I can imagine quite a lot when it comes to one of your movies! :) First of all, I loved the custom titles, made me feel like I´m watching a movie in cinema.. then the characters, how they came alive for me, great voiceovers all around.. I loved the music (I admit to liking techno), and especially the music in the end sets the mood for the second part.. the special effects.. can´t talk much about it here because that would be giving away things! And over all, the story.. it kept me on the edge of my seat, you did some clever things there.. and of course, the editing, which was just perfect! So now I´m sitting here biting my nails and waiting for part two.. which is quite the way you intended it to be, I´m sure!;) Great movie!
I thought this was your best movie since Unredeemed. An engaging storyline and delightful dialogue, keeping the viewer in suspense. I find that this is the right medium for all sorts of ingenious display of the storytelling craft, and you have got it all the way.
There are at least two major plot elements which I found quite enjoyable, none of which I will mention as not to spoil anybody's fun. I say that because I just glanced into one of your reviews before watching the movie, and it did take away a bit of the suspense.
Also, the structured way with which you have approached the camera framing and music is not only admirable, but examplary.
This is one of the most exciting movies to grace the TMO site. I, for one, am hooked and ready for Part 2!
- Bezzer36
Now this is what I'm talking about!
I've said from day 1 that Joseph is THE master storyteller here on TMO and this just further enforces my theory.
First, he introduces you to the characters, but he does it without you even realising and that's because second, you're already deeply drawn into the plot.
Then, while keeping you hooked, he forces you to ask questions...questions that are relative to the story and that leave you begging for answers AND the conclusion.
Combine this genius with the cinematic visuals, the clever editing, the pounding soundtrack and a truly awesome VO cast and you have part 1 of Josephkw's FATED.
There has been a thousand questions asked about the future of 'the movies'...Joseph has answered most of them with this...it's going to be around for a long time!
Stunning.
Best Thriller I have seen on TMO Full Stop!, I thought I was watching Prison Break for christ sake!!! and that's saying alot. Your skills in presentation of the story are outstanding. The story was refreshing and wonderfully told. The VO's were all spot on in the characters and they all came to life. I know I shouldnt give the end away but to be on the safe side I will say this. I was kind of expecting it. If there was one thing I would have personally liked was if you swapped the final explanation of the revelation around. Other than that a brilliant ending that will leave everyone waiting impatiently for the next part!
I would love you to feature as a future director of my written Action TV Series someday perhaps!
Oh, why did I wait so long to watch this one! You pulled me into this film from the opening titles and held me by the throat until the very end. I was actually upset that it was over. I wanted more!
This is a refreshing take on a familiar plot and handled better than most paid Hollywood directors. I kept thinking to myself as I watched this excellent film, ??Why is this guy not making real movies??? Then I realized that you just did! Excellent Job!
Again, this is one of the few movies I was actually sorry to see end.
Oh Wow! Incredible movie and everything about it. I found the subtitles a bit distracting since it's human nature for the eyes to be drawn towards movement but I understand the use of subtitle and voice here on TMO, and have seen a few other movies do the same.Thank you for the great review of my THE DOOR movie - and yes I honestly feel the same way as you about the odd ending and the girl's reaction to the door & stuff: many times I can't find the exact
scenes/acting/emotion I want in my movies, I changed the movie a bit as I edited it, the western is very odd and made me nervous releasing it but I left it as is, but actually the bizzare camera shots is intentional to make the audience uneasy and a slight out of the mind feel to the movie but the intention was not to make anyone motion sick , sorry LOL and I took out most of them as I changed the movie. To have you (as great as your movies are)to give my movies 5 stars and compliment my movies is awesomely thrilling - thanks :)
What a cliff hanger!
Very intense thriller!
More twists than a Chubby Checker song.
Great editing.
The voice acting stands out. Although I felt one of the actors to be wooden, until I realised who he was. No longer did he seem wooden, he suddenly seemed very scary.
Very clever and well written script.
*MoMc review*
A smooth, professional opening with subtle use of custom titles leads into very well made series of overdubbed exposition scenes that manage to actually build pace and tension rather than lose it.
For all that, the movie seems to be on predictable territory and one could be easily lulled into paying too little attention and letting it drift by. This problem is counteracted by several techniques that work to pull the viewer back in, one of which is the quality of the editing. Almost invisible, as good editing should be, but nevertheless always working to pull the eye and brain back to the screen and the story.
Also, and maybe this was an inadvertant by product of working with VO and sound sync glitches but I prefer to think it deliberate, the dialogue and it's delivery was slow, measured, almost heavy with deeper though obscure meaning. Very much had me in mind of David Lynch or the Wachowski's and had me paying close attention in case I missed something important.
The seemingly simple serial killer plot kept enough doubt and second guessing in the mind that I simply could not with any certainty say which way this was headed, or even whether it was about to take off in a totally unexpected direction completely.
Sets, prop use, customs, all as good as one has come to expect from this Studio but perhaps used a little more subtly than before.
Music use was very well done, unintrusive but effective and placed well.
Flaws..I am fine with subs on their own, or for foreign language, but I found myself distracted from the movie as I kept realising I was reading the subs even though I could hear the lines perfectly clearly. Minor flaw in my mind.
The Tim character was obviously useful for the narrative dumps but was unconvincing and drew attention the artificiality of the plot and story.
On the whole, a great piece of work without being flashy and trying to wow the audience into submission.
Could have tipped down to 4 star but for the ending, nice little spoke you put in my plot wheel there.
First off let me say thank you for the music, ermm, for not using the music to be exact.
Although I had my fears when I read Techno, provokes a reaction in me like biting a lemon, I can't imaging an Alternative Rock soundtrack to have the same impact.
The music you chose did excellently fit the to the tempo of the movie.
Editing was superp, I can say without exaggerating it's easily among the best I've seen.
Only one small flaw, to me anyways, was the transition from the Police office to the road, I would have liked to see more of a flow in that.
Overlay work was amazing, must have taken you quite some time to get these done.
Subtitles, albeit I thought them to be unnecessary as all the VO's were done very clear, easily understandable and without the usual changes in pitch and soundlevel, they sure didn't distract to much from the movie.
Now about the movie and the story so far:
Hard to say anything about that without running danger to spoil the fun for other viewers.
You did a great job playing with the viewers expectations on this one.
The all too selfsure Detective Stockholm makes the give away dialogue between him and the young cop almost believable.
Well it works for the duration of the movie, that without having any real action manages to keep the mind too occupied to wonder about any possible inconsistencies in the movie.
One more word to the editing, because it was really amazing:
I imaging it to have been hard work (but maybe I applaud you here for sheer luck) to match the actors reactions so perfectly to the spoken dialogue.
I've read with interest your notices on camerawork but most of the time I couldn't really point out any of it, the selection of angles as well as the changes of viewpoint did flow so well with the story they were hardly noticeable.
With the above pointed out exception in editing and an off angle in the car that I thought broke the overall concept momentarily.
I guess this will be a good reason to go back and compare styles once the second part is out.
Overall 4.8 Stars
Excellent! I can't wait for part 2! The voiceovers and music are awesome! Very good work on overlays. The story is great showing us many characters and keeps me wandering about what role they will have in the next episode. Also the part at the end is intriguing it has got me wandering what is going to happen, is the victim playing a trick or something else? Bring on part 2!
A brilliant film, with an ending so...powerful it could make someone speechless. My mate Sam will love this film, as he loves psychological thrillers. It caught me in some kind of spider's web, and then was springing me back and forth from different places to uncover this mystery. A really exciting cliffhanger at the end, with excellent music all through. Good editing, and custom backdrops.
Your SFX Wizardry is amazingly strong, causing many people to say 'wow'. It made me say it at least 126 times (my favourite number), causing any other people to say the same. To be honest, this film would be good enough for a real movie, like I emailed George Lucas for a film idea, and hopefully will create it in a few years time.
At first this film was blank to me. I knew nothing about it. I then watched the trailer. Even better than a normal movie if you think about. And then, oh, the film. The actual movie. This movie has actually changed my life, as I am thinking about fate and stuff. I have actually learnt something from this dramatical thriller about a serial killer.
Hopefully there will be another movie (ie. Fated part 2) or even a completely different movie that is just as good as this one. When I make thrillers I will be thinking of Fated and you, Joseph Kwong.
At first glance, Joseph Kwong's "Fated" seems to be going through the motions of a suspenseful little psychological thriller where we, the viewers, are asked to plummet into the minds of a serial killer and the obsessive detective devoted to bringing him to justice. But a closer look reveals something much darker and perhaps more mystical pulsing beneath the surface. Instead of relying on the predetermined nature of this sort of "been-there-done-that" narrative, JosephKW takes these genre conventions and subverts them to his liking, turning what could be a very simplistic story into yet another TMO masterwork where the director is allowed to explore his common themes of spirituality and alienation. Not since Unfinished have I seen the director delving into the heady territory that has made him famous, and although we are only given a small hint of the mind-bending goodness yet to come, it is enough to sustain us until part two.
As for the writing and directing, Joseph is once again at the top of his game. Visually, the movie explodes with the director's usual flair for customized backdrop use and extensive set dressing, giving us a true impression of "being there." Cinematographically taut, well edited, and cross-cut to perfection, the movie is a treat to look at. The writing, too, is great stuff, the script often alluding to the many treats the director has in store for us later.
As far as "flaws" go, it's tough and mostly overly subjective. Like parts of Quietus II, I felt some of the humorous asides were a bit overdone and unneeded (the donut-obsessed cop was a little hard to swallow, for instance), and the crosscutting between killer and cop may have been a tad on the manipulative side (albeit very very well handled).
I also found it interesting that the director's trademark SFX wizardry was absent. I think it's a testament to his talent that such things were unneeded to make this movie rock-and-roll.
Conclusion? I'm hooked. I can't wait for part two.
lol wow was that great or what?? (without giving the twist away) You made me think one way then took it another direction. Amazing! You must watch alot of Law & Order or something. The script was excellent...superb...damn near flawless! This deserves 10 stars but unfortunately I can only give you 5...sry.
Next time don't leave me in suspense! lol
Now that's a cliffhanger ending~! One that holds the suspense and at the same time puzzles you. What will John's words mean between him and Aaron. I also like the part where the road trip and Detective Stockholm's revelation is going back and forth, revealing and changing as the story goes. One part of the movie I was hoping for more was the conversation between John and Aaron. It seemed kinda too fast for Stockholm to give out the prime evidence that points to who's the killer when the suspense between who's the killer in the car was just warmed up by John and Aaron's conversation. Nevertheless, the dialogues here are as interesting and wonderful as ever, just like Unredeemed. Want a movie with well written dialogues and intriguing characters - watch a JosephKw movie.
A Review In Association With FunkyFilms
This was not what I thought it would be. It was very different. But sometimes, different things can be very nice...
I must say that it had some class. It was an interesting, new way, to make a movie. Now I have not watched any of your other productions, but from what I can take from here, they must surely have something about them. Directors do not change that much...
The voice-overs were certainly good. Though I must point out that some of them - especially the voice of "John" - sounded a little... distant. One of the best things, one that can determine whether a movie is good or not, were the custom titles and credits. They were some of the best I've seen here. That belended with some nice music was brilliant. One thing is that you could have had a little quiet piece of music playing in the background while they had the long conversations. That said - there is still a lot that could be said - it was a great movie and I am looking forward to see what happens in part 2. Please let me know when released.
Greetings,
Well the movie was spectacular. I loved every minute of it. Although during the movie, I would have had a different choice in music. But that doesn't matter. What matters is that you made a fantastic movie. It had a great storyline, and a good couple of twists. Well done.
Ok, now where are the flaws!?!??!?!?!
From the outset we get a punchy overview of what is to come, chalklike titles, EVERYTHING LOOKS CONVENTIONAL! it's brilliant, tension, suspense, action, the great dialogue, backstories everyhitng is apparent in this 12 minute drama.
Part 2, it's just not computing with me! There's a part 2! I just cannot wait!
In a nutshell: One of the best of 2006
"One Thousand And One Minutes"
Visual: Custom backdrop with the jail set suited perfectly. A few of the other backdrops seemed out of place, and a handful of cuts didn't really flow well. No glaring problems, but nothing that stood out as being exceptionally well done.
=> 12/20
Audio: Ever-present hum for one of the characters lines. Though it suited, that music the car was playing was horrific. Most of the voiceovers were delivered cleanly enough, but I rarely felt that there was any emotion behind any of it, and that's a real problem. You've got some of the greatest actors on TMO in your movie, and if all you do is hand them their lines and nothing more, you'd be better off using a voice synthesizer. Many of the lines could have been done so much better. Even lines which should have had an exclamation in the subtitled version were delivered flat, as though the character was asleep.
=> 8/20
Script: No, no, no. Nobody speaks like this. Much of the dialogue felt weak, very much textbook stuff. This really let the whole thing down. It felt like you ripped the dialogue straight out of Days of Our Lives, resulting in something that felt very stilted, and not at all natural. Plotwise, it did have some decent ideas, but so much of it seemed forced. There were also many parts where it felt like you were trying to build suspense in the plot, or startle the viewer, but because the movie plays it safe in terms of where the plot moves, it never really worked. A few plotholes were present, too -- why do the media call him "The Fate Killer" when they haven't been told the details that would cause him to be called the Fate killer? Some parts even felt patronizing, stating the obvious. The only advice I can give you, is when writing dialogue, read it out loud. If you're not a native english speaker (and at this stage, I'm forced to assume you're not), give your voice actors the freedom to improvise. Also, never be afraid to cut lines if they don't sound right. Most importantly though, don't insult the intelligence of your audience. Nobody likes to be spoonfed information.
=> 2/20
Genre: You did this part right. It felt like an action movie, though more of a hunting-a-killer type thing. No real twists as yet, but you did alright with it.
=> 17/20
Feeling: I hate being the odd man out. I almost wasn't going to submit the review, because it feels like I have nothing positive to say. Maybe it's the hype that surrounded this movie, or the fact that it hit #1 that made me think it was going to be something special. Don't get me wrong -- the intro was cool, very stylish, and lots of atmosphere. Use of subtitles with VO's detracted from the overall tone of the movie, and made me think "I'm watching TMO", just when the tone was set up so well. What's worse, is it was all downhill from there. I wanted to like this. Audio problems are usually forgivable, and not much of a hinderance. The reviews you'd been getting gave me hope, but in the end, the worst thing about this movie is the script. It just killed any chance I had of enjoying it. The ending (without being a smart alec), was done well -- stylish and all that, and if I was judging this purely on the intro and close scene, I would have scored this higher. Look at the atmopshere you created there, and try and emulate that for the next part of this movie.
=> 10/20
Rating: 49/100 (3 Stars)
Length: 11:46
Tally: 141:47
Genius. First you make me think it's the hitch hiker, then the Asian guy, then the cop, only to make me come back to the hitch hiker. Good stuff. This is a great serial killer mystery and well deserving of its place at number one. The story is well written and there are a few twists in there to keep things interesting. The dialogue is also very well written and its backed up by a talented voice cast. There are some very interesting characters in this film and I'm curious to know will become of them, particularly the senior detective out to find the killer.
Great work. I'm looking forward to part two.
Except for the person in the car the VO's were very good. The person in the car was good as well but sounded a bit if was it recoreded in the bad room.
But apart from that all I think this is a very good movie. Even if I don't like movies that are seperated in parts this one has a very good cliffhanger.
At last I'm glad that I have found some time to look at this terrific movie of yours. Fated remains exciting up to the last minute. You can see to some details, for instance when John in the car is looking at his watch (I really could even recognise the mark of it), how much time you have spend for making this movie. I also want you to thank for the English subtitles. I think for some under us, that are not English-speaking, this was certain not a disturbing element, on the contrary. With much tension, I look already for the continuation of Fated...and a great deal of succes with your next project!
Brilliant! Everything in that film was plotted and carried out to perfection. The music fitted perfectly and you excellently synced the voices with the body movements of the characters. Even the subtle details like the character modelling was excellent and it's so good to see that you spent time making the characters fit to the voices that they were designed for. The voice acting was excellent and the story was gripping. A true acheivement, well done!
woah! that movie rocked! i loved the twist! it was quite hard to find it out thogh, so people who watch it look out for clues. i want to see the next episode tho.
ways to improve:
I thought the movies outline was fantastic! there is not many way to make it better, but you could make it is little longer and make it more harder for the veiwer to find out the twist. or you could have more people to make it harder, like one is a very evil one that makes people think he is when he is or isn't. anyway thats just some of my thoughts.
oh yh and next veiwers you will love it!
brill movie keep up the good work!!!
I think you may have overhyped this movie. The overall story is very interesting and I am eager to see the next installment. However, there are simply too many glaring problems with it. First of all, the VO's were very bland and lacking in any emotion, and it didn't help that the dialogue you wrote for the characters was so generic. I liked how you tried to make the whole movie about anticipation, but the "twist" is not even a surpise. Also, I feel you made some stylistic mistakes. I don't think the techno works and the visuals are very bland, and don't feel cohesive enough to work in this slick thriller. Finally, I would eliminate the subtitles because it takes away some of the cinematic feel of the movie.
A great Crime/Mystery/Suspense/Thriller. The use of techno music (which I am not fond of, normally) worked well for this. The VAs were great, as were the custom titles. The storyline was very original. You left us on a cliffhanger that makes me wonder, 'why would you do that to us?'. In conclusion, a great film that is well deserving of many things to come for it. Can't wait for Part 2.
Posted on December 3, 2006
Very good - I liked the ending, even though I knew my money was safe on who was the serial killer (the acting [it was good, but the mistake here was that he acted like a serial killer and not like a normal person throughout] and choice of facial expression seemed to telegraph it too much).
It was a top class story and script; I was a bit worried by the pregnant pauses in the dialogue during the early scenes, but the pace picked up - especially when the young cop appeared - his performance was excellent during every scene he was in. Some of the other characters seemed to talk in slow motion at times, but not him.
Nice use of custom backdrops and overlays, especially when related to the central pivot of the mystery - that being the method by which the serial killer leaves his mark.
The music went well with the story - including the overly loud techno stuff in the car. It successfully helped to paint the character portraits of the two individuals involved.
The cliffhangar is suitably painful! A real groaner - because we're going to have to wait several weeks or months to see what happens (unless part 2 is already in the can and waiting to be released in a week of course).
Very good film - liked it alot!
****
"Fated" is an excellent TMO crime drama, and deserves every minute of its inevitable sequel.
This was an easy film to sit back and enjoy, but a tough one to review without some heavy spoilers. Sorry. You've been warned.
***SPOILER ALERT*** DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FILM!!!!!
I watched this the day I received your PM to the premiere, Joseph, but did not review then because I wanted to think about the impression it left on me for a bit, then come back and have another look. I was initially tempted to give the film four stars, and I'm glad I came back today after rethinking it and watched the film a second time. I came away with most of the same impressions, both positive and negative. Here they are, in no particular order - more of a free-associating thing.
-----------------
From its excellent custom intros to its closing custom credits, "Fated" treats us to a magnificent display of time-consuming, patience-devouring, sleep-reducing custom work; animos, custom backdrops, imaginative angles, freezeframes, cuts, and overall art direction and cinematography that puts most other TMO movies to shame. Your long-time fans have come to expect this from you, Joseph - this clear display of hard work and dedication to the craft. You do it every time, and it's one reason I keep coming back to see everything you produce.
The introduction and those very fine newsreader voices (kudos to those actors for steady and believeable work - essential for those roles) kick "Fated" off to a great start.
Techno music. Hmmm. It's tolerable on the car radio as representative of the driver's taste in music (even though it IS techno). It's inappropriate in others, given the grim nature of the film's content (and given that it is, still, techno music). And for me, it was just plain wrong for the most tense moments in the film. Granted, it could have been worse. Could have been, I dunno, Emo or something. ;)
My point is NOT that I am not a techno fan, Joseph - it is just that I feel that any chilling effect or sense of really unnerving tension in the film could have been better served by subtler sounds. Just my personal opinion, mind you, which won't buy you a candy bar at the corner market.
Worth mentioning is the clear effort (though you often make it look SO easy) that you always put into crafting believable dialogue. The vast majority of the dialogue is very well-done, but there are some rough spots. Other reviewers have already pointed out the noticeably heavy-handed manner in which "Fated" sometimes manipulates the viewer to believe one thing or another, almost deciding FOR the viewer who the actual killer might be or what a piece of evidence might mean. I realize the need to work fast given the short-attention-span-theater nature of TMO films, but some dialogue choices seemed contrived to -shove- the viewer toward conclusions rather than gently guiding them there; leading (even yanking) by the hand rather than pointing out the fork in the road and letting the viewer choose the path.
It also became immediately obvious to me watching the film the second time around that the news reports were incorrect about the killer's "trademark" being a chalk outline around the bodies (which would actually be called a "signature", rather than a "trademark" - little surprised you did not pick up this term given the obvious research you put into serial killers while making your film).
As your investigator points out, while police do often withhold crucial information from the media and the public, in order to avoid copycats and to retain information that only the killer would know (to be used later in the investigation and trial against them), they do NOT make a habit of allowing the media to promote blatantly false information about crime scenes. As we later discover, the bodies were NOT outlined in chalk at all. This was either a) a rather large error, or b) something that you MUST address later by providing a reason why the police would allow this falsehood to take root in the public consciousness as a truth. I get where you were going with this (the rimshot conclusion back in the desert with the chalk in John's car - the 'fooled ya' moment), but withholding information in the interest of discretion is absolutely not the same as allowing false information to be reported as truth. Maybe the media outlets that were reporting on the crime just made a "mistake", but... This plot point stuck in my personal craw and made me feel gypped about the 'fooled ya' moment.
Moving on...
No matter what anyone else says, I feel that subtitles are NOT necessary (and are more of a distraction than anything else) unless they are for:
translating foreign languages, establishing locations (Nevada Desert - 1995, for instance), or if the voiceovers are tough to make out.
They were not needed here, as the VO's were all generally solid and clear (not to mention well-acted). Also noticeable was the fact that the subtitles often did not match the dialogue word-for-word - very distracting to me personally, like trying to pat my head and rub my tummy at the same time. If others have convinced you that you must use subs, then, at minimum, make them precise.
As a serial killer "fan" and an avid reader of true crime, as well as one who once pursued law enforcement and wanted to get into behavioral profiling - I enjoyed immensely your dialogue about serial killers and profiling. It's again clear that you did homework on this front (as you clearly do on your other films, as well). The mentions of childhood abuse (and subsequently abusing small animals), the posing of victims, and the killer's interest in law enforcement techniques (and possibly even taunting the police with their own methods) was simply brilliant, and added volumes to the conversation's believability.
I was especially impressed that you managed to nail the true motivation of most serial killers - power and control. Not sex, not money, not insanity ----- it's about power and control.
You might enjoy picking up a couple of John Douglas books before finalizing the future installment(s) of "Fated" - they'll give you greater insight into the minds and works of serial killers and may help you broaden your dialogue and storytelling even further. (John Douglas was a real-life behavioral profiler for the FBI - one of the first - and was the real-life model for the role of Jodie Foster's supervisor in "Silence of the Lambs"). His books are fascinating and frightening.
And so, all in all, is "Fated".
No matter what you may take away from everything above this sentence, Joseph, it is the sentence below this one that sums up your film, the same sentence with which I began this review:
"Fated" is an excellent TMO crime drama, and deserves every minute of its inevitable sequel.
Thanks for letting me be a part of this, and know that I am honestly, earnestly looking forward to working with you again.
Good job. Nice use of custom backdrops and overlays. I just started and haven't used any of that stuff yet. Check out my films and let em know what you think.
A few suggestions:
The movie did seem to drag a little bit. It needs a little more energy either by adding more enthusiasm to the voiceover (especially in the car) or by adding a little action.
If the chalk in the glove box doesn't come into play later, it doesn't do much more than take a jab at the viewer by pointing out that we haven't figured out who the killer is. The same goes for the cop pointing out that the killer might be a cop. Trying to throw off your viewer is a standard aspect of a mystery, but you don't have to make it so obvious (especially in such a short film) - it defeats the purpose. The idea is to get your audience to think they've solved it, then throw a curve ball in that will make them rethink what they've been watching - all you did was cast doubt from the very begining which means the viewer will lose interest until you are ready to reveal the truth.
I'm not trying to belittle your film. I actually liked it and am looking forward to part 2. Just wanted to give you some stuff to think about.
,Matt
Another state of the art and intriguing tale that exudes class. Everything from the ambience of the music, the excellent script, the delightful VO's and the excellent direction was exceptional and what I have become known to expect now. What sets your movies apart though is your spin on convention. The victim possibly taking control at the end creates a must view the sequel scenario. All in all a very very good first part.
Don't get me wrong, this is an exceptioanlly well made film. The dialogue is top notch and your VO cast performed brilliantly. Kudos to you for the realistic dialogue and your assembled cast. No complaints there.
What I had a problem with was the execution and style of the film. It just felt very odd...almost like a parody. This was a very dark subject matter but the tone was light and there were actually a couple of moments wher I was chuckling at the characters--funny, but doesn't fit what should be the feeling from the situation. And about the "twist," well, it was as predictable as you could've made it...as soon as the men in the car began their conversation, I knew dead on that the hitchiker weas the killer. A little more subtlety would've done the trick.
Overall, I was a tad bit disappointed. But I will definately watch Part 2...
And I hope I don't recieve a massive forum backlash from this review :) !! I just realized this is the 1st 4 star review for this film!
A simply fantastic movie, with perhaps the best twist I've ever had the pleasure to witness in a TMO movie. The editing was spot-on, and the directing was professionally executed, with many a movie-esque flash between scenes. The 2 plots side by side was entertaining and made it easy for you to mould your story and in doing so mould the viewer's emotion at the frequent revealations.
All in all, a movie not too heavy as too require much thought, but not exactly throw-away stuff either. This prefect balance enabled you to create arguably one of the finest TMO movies ever made.
An intruiging piece of excellently fabricated film that had me staring at the screen every minute. The thing I loved the best was just when you revealed mone mystery, you opened another for part 2. Only a writer/director as good as you could pull of a film as masterfully as this.
It's not very often you see mystery/thrillers of this calibre on the website, but this one takes the cake. An outstanding masterpiece, I am eagerly anticipating Part Two.
WOW! I thought the accountant was the fate killer! What a twist! Amazing build up and the VO's were amazing, maybe some female roles next time?
Nightfire Useable Quote: "A TMO classic for sure, this film will keep you interested past the credits... the ending is full of suspence as well"
This story grips you from the opening credits and leaves you guessing where it is going. The two alternating settings and characters are effectively used to drive the story in a most creative way. The characters were true to life and the use of humor underlying the mounting suspense added to the depth of the storytelling.
The custom effects are outstanding but good movie making is about telling a story and Josephkw once again has proven he is one of the best at this craft.
Polished dialogues with elegant wit is what I like the most about josephkw??s movies. In Fated, these lines serve as an excellent device for character expositions. I have to admire the level of sophistication.
The premise of this movie is very intriguing as well, and significant amount of research and contemplation is evident.
As for the plot, I sensed that a considerable effort was made to manipulate and guide (or misguide) the viewer??s representation of the events, which is great because I think that??s how good thrillers are achieved. If this were a real movie though, I might have complained that such an effort was slightly more visible than I would like it to be. For example, the chalk reference was terrific, but could have been even better if toned down a bit in my opinion.
The critical question: how on earth could that person possibly know what he claims to know, or if he indeed does not, why does he claim so? I would await the answer with baited breath, as this in my opinion holds the key to the success of this series.
Overall, wonderful dialogue, highly original and interesting ideas, impeccable voice acting, beautiful backdrops, and great pacing (most part) make Fated part 1 thoroughly enjoyable. Now, the question is what happens in part 2.
Joseph you are a master story teller. Every aspect of this movie was incredible from the backgrounds to the music. The VA's were all fantastic. This story had me hooked from the beginning as I am very much fascinated by serial killers. You have done an incredible job of hooking the viewer with the story cannot wait for the next installment
Storyline ?? I have to start with the intro and tell you, that it is definitely one of the coolest, cinematic intros on TMO I have seen so far. Accompanied by intensive newsreader-voices, it throws the viewer from the first second on into the atmospheric world of Fated. In the following story you are showing the gargantuan art of your storytelling- ability. I really enjoyed the chalk-aerosol plottwist. The dialogues were sophisticated, but a little bit long and unessential when they are in the car, I think. But there is no doubt, that you are one of the tremendous brilliant directors on TMO. Especially the brutal cliffhanger in the end shows what an awesome calibre of director you are. Very good!
28% out of 30%
Anomaly Factor ?? The story about a serial killer and the search after him is not really a new invention on the story market. ;) But your personal, unorthodox style turns this kind of story into an adventure and experience. The world of Fated breathes through the awesome fictitious and well developed characters as well as through the fresh kind of dialogues.
STORYBASED RATING: 45% out of 50%
Music ?? Here is one of the few parts of a shallow critique. I am not a huge fan of techno music. And I don??t think that techno music should appear in movies. It??s too hectic and destroys a little bit of atmosphere. I loved the style of music in Quietus. I think it fits better. Maybe it is a matter of taste. Contrariwise the intro and ending music was absolutely cool. 7% out of 10%
Voice Over ?? The cast is awesome. I love your voice, Joseph. And you knelled some of the best VO artists of TMO here. Good job! 10% out of 10%
Effects and Design - What should I say about the Effects and Designs of a JosephKw flick? That they are brilliant? That they are exceptional? That they are exceeding? Yes! Because it is the truth. 10% out of 10%
Camera - Very unconventional and free-spirited camera work. There are some brilliant camera ankles and movements in this movie. Sometimes the border of the camera glues on the forehead of the actors, which looks, uhm, interesting. But that??s minimal, nearly invisible critique. The rest of the camera work is amazingly well done. 9% out of 10%
Cut - The cut is brilliant. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow. Every time it engrafts very well into the story and creates an exemplary flow. 10% out of 10%
TECHNICAL RATING: 46% out of 50%
Another wonderful movie by Joseph Kwong. You are one of the few directors on TMO, which has the ability to create real masterpieces. This is one of them. I am waiting for Part two!
However you look at it, it always just comes back to one word. that word being "incredible". The look of the movie was very good as i've come to expeect from your movies but the most important thing for me was the dialogue. The cat and mouse conversation between the cop angle and the car passengers was great. I wished you would have went with the alternative music personally (but i did like how you joked about it)...
I love the off center shots. I treid it in a short movie once and people didnt get why the camera cut off certain parts of the body. I hope the audience that watches this understands artistic direction.
Overall i loved this movie and cant wait for the conclusion (you really did end on an interesting situation)
Wow! This is every bit as good as I imagined it, no, it is better.. and believe me, I can imagine quite a lot when it comes to one of your movies! :) First of all, I loved the custom titles, made me feel like I´m watching a movie in cinema.. then the characters, how they came alive for me, great voiceovers all around.. I loved the music (I admit to liking techno), and especially the music in the end sets the mood for the second part.. the special effects.. can´t talk much about it here because that would be giving away things! And over all, the story.. it kept me on the edge of my seat, you did some clever things there.. and of course, the editing, which was just perfect! So now I´m sitting here biting my nails and waiting for part two.. which is quite the way you intended it to be, I´m sure!;) Great movie!
An amazing action thriller, murder story!! I loved it!!! you've really suprised us Josephkw of what you would make after your Quietus films and i have to say this new murder, action series is really epic and entertaining!!!
The film has been shot very well, with a very in-depth plot already, can't w8 for part 2, also, the music was chosen very well and i loved the custom set dressings as they made this look like no other murder, action thriller on tmo!!
I really enjoyed this movie, i loved the cast, they were all amazing and i loved the ending, can't w8 to see how part 2 turns out!!
Overall, a very entertaining action thriller that is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and a must see!!!! Excellent work!!!!
THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF YOUR BEST MOVIES!!!
You must have done quite a bit of research and writing into making this an absolutely clever movie. I also was pleased to see that one of the characters had the same name as me(Aaron). It is really exciting and quite terrifying. I say this as people who pick up hitchikers must be cautious. Anyone or anything could DO anything to a human. This extraordinary movie MUST win an award,
or be hotpicked. If it doesn't, I don't know what will!
I cannot wait for the second release!!!
I need to know how to get 8eyed baby stuff and backdrops and overlays onto the game, as I find frustrating to try. I also would like to know what your next release will be, and if you could review MOCKER SPECIAL EDITION. You reviewed MOCKER and thought it was good, but needed more in the movie. I followed your advice and made an all-new version. It has been reviewed, but I need more!
You are, in my opinion, one of the GREATEST filmmakers on TMO!!!
ROCK ON!!!
I thought this was your best movie since Unredeemed. An engaging storyline and delightful dialogue, keeping the viewer in suspense. I find that this is the right medium for all sorts of ingenious display of the storytelling craft, and you have got it all the way.
There are at least two major plot elements which I found quite enjoyable, none of which I will mention as not to spoil anybody's fun. I say that because I just glanced into one of your reviews before watching the movie, and it did take away a bit of the suspense.
Also, the structured way with which you have approached the camera framing and music is not only admirable, but examplary.
This is one of the most exciting movies to grace the TMO site. I, for one, am hooked and ready for Part 2!
Fantastic part 1, with a few excellent twists and turns. You managed to deceive the viewer and kept them wondering, and that is what a thriller is all about.
Strong vo cast and excellent choice of music. Already looking forward to part 2, don't keep us waiting too long ;-)
Now this is what I'm talking about!
I've said from day 1 that Joseph is THE master storyteller here on TMO and this just further enforces my theory.
First, he introduces you to the characters, but he does it without you even realising and that's because second, you're already deeply drawn into the plot.
Then, while keeping you hooked, he forces you to ask questions...questions that are relative to the story and that leave you begging for answers AND the conclusion.
Combine this genius with the cinematic visuals, the clever editing, the pounding soundtrack and a truly awesome VO cast and you have part 1 of Josephkw's FATED.
There has been a thousand questions asked about the future of 'the movies'...Joseph has answered most of them with this...it's going to be around for a long time!
Stunning.
I can see this getting quite high in the charts, possibly 2nd - 6th
I am putting this in my hotpick consideration forum.
Now I really enjoyed that, it sucked me in and entertained me so wonderfully. Again many good things to see here, the editing was great, the use of custom stuff, the VO, the music. I could not find many flaws, just the odd bit of distortion on the VO??s or certain shot, but nothing big.
Best Thriller I have seen on TMO Full Stop!, I thought I was watching Prison Break for christ sake!!! and that's saying alot. Your skills in presentation of the story are outstanding. The story was refreshing and wonderfully told. The VO's were all spot on in the characters and they all came to life. I know I shouldnt give the end away but to be on the safe side I will say this. I was kind of expecting it. If there was one thing I would have personally liked was if you swapped the final explanation of the revelation around. Other than that a brilliant ending that will leave everyone waiting impatiently for the next part!
I would love you to feature as a future director of my written Action TV Series someday perhaps!
