Film Description
Sparks Fly is a Sci Fi Romance based around the research of a higher intelligence into the subject of "Love".
This kind of love is powerful. The kind of love that will pull buildings apart.
Fear and Love become the same. Both are equally powerful. And equally capable of killing and creating.
Fear helps us survive, whilst love leaves us open to attack.
Love keeps our species together, whilst fear tears us apart.

What kind of love is this? You decide.

Featuring the voice talent of:

Postmodernchuck
Rposhard
AzureSama
Lucindamc123
Yukitau

PR posters and artwork by Sourtarget and Worryman.

A completely unique soundtrack created by myself.
Thanks go to KRC for bringing me onboard with PE and helping with the VO's.
And thanks to Greenglades for doing the end credits and helping a hell of a lot with the sound issues.

And a very special thanks goes to the fansties, especially 8eyedbaby. Ozman, you rock!

A pretentious and inane premise is further muddled by frequent insert shots and a great deal of monologueing which could be summed up in five words: "Sometimes love makes things explode."

Not everything in this movie, however, is as saturated with ego as the plot and writing. Some of the camera work is clever and it makes use of some custom overlays which look very nice.

My advice to you is the same as I give almost everyone else: play Edward Scissorhands for a moment and cut it down. The repetition of your 'thesis,' as it were, is unfounded in an 11min production...and it really has no business being 11min anyway.

How come I've never heard of this PE film? Anywho, What a great cast! The beginning was riveting. The way you filmed it, the way the heartbeat went, the incredible score, it added so much to this film.

A beautiful romance movie with an original story. I felt every emotion of this movie. The editing was splendid in so many places but yet there were few parts that needed adjusting. The camera angles were well done and something to observe.

All in all, you're a smaller studio who will definately get your spotlight. This movie will definately get you there.

Incredible Movie.

A concept, so unique, so original; so perfect. Love is a force, a power with unimaginable possibilities. The power to shift mountains, and the power to destroy them, this power is harnessed in many ways. The idea for this fantastic movie is absolutely awesome, for in all the movies that I have seen to date, none compare with artful brilliance of 'Sparks Fly'. A place where love is sacred, and feared as well. I think I speak for most of the people on TMO when I say I would love to see a sequel to this great creation, one where fear is focussed on more, and how it can create and destroy with the same force. Excellent in the highest quality, with a concept that will blow you away, a movie so unique it can't be missed. Congratulations on a terrific movie, hope to see at number #1 sometime soon (you can make it happen).

Simply amazing -- visual poetry. You have created an esoteric film that I fear will not find the audience it deserves. Thank you for letting me be a part of this extraordinary vision -- this insight into the ultimate power of Love.

Surreal, enigmatic, and knowingly ethereal, Sparks Fly submerges us into the destructive world of human emotion while unflinchingly experimenting with the cinematic form. Delirious Studios spares no expense, dishing out pure cinematic invention with every frame, supplying some interesting formal techniques that teeter into the visual realm of the avant-garde. I was particularly taken with the elliptical editing style employed throughout the film to disorient the viewer and force them into the emotionally fraught psychosis of the main character -- a shocking technique that fractures the narrative and forces us to put together the pieces. And throughout, moments of beauty burst from the forefront -- teasing us with the possibilities of cinema.

And then there's love. The subject of the film. Whether the destructive permeatations of love selflessly bring us together or selfishly tear us apart is a question left unanswered. Sparks fly throughout the movie, both literally and figuratively, and the surreal poetry sprinkled throughout the movie grapple with the prospect of love as destruction -- both internal and external. But if it is the capacity for love that makes us unique, then what do its destructive properties say about us? Just as we are unsure what is real and what is not throughout the film, the mysteries of love remain elusive throughout.

The soundtrack was exceptional. Pitch perfect.

A great film -- one which I am proud to be a part of.

Wow Del, This is a truly unique movie, it was very strange but captivating, the cast was brilliant and the free cam was used here very well and the movie contained some really beautiful music to set the atmosphere for the film, i can't believe you made this soundtrack yourself, because it's truly superb.

This Sci - Fi Romance is a one of a kind and deserves it's Hot - Pick.

This film is an interesting take on an over-used idea. The concept was nothing new; only told in a new, dramatic fashion. But the delivery was nice, in the over-all completion of the scenes used and images within contrasting one another, the sound effects laid nearly seamlessly into the actions of the moment, and cast who played well into their characters. Camera work was on par with many of the other great films on TMO, and the overlays quality showed through. The music was one of the best features.

??SPARKS FLY?? ?? by DELIRIOUSSTUDIOS. Official ATP Productions review by Sparky1512 and Trewill7.

Firstly, our apologies for the delayed review.

PLOT

An interesting look at the enigma of ??love??, the effects it can have on a multitude of situations in life and how an ??outside?? force may view ??love??. If aliens were in fact studying us, what would they make of such irrational behaviour associated with love, fear, hatred etc. Sparks Fly took an interesting approach to this subject ?? part straight movie, part artistic/poetic piece. At times we felt that a little more ??straight forward?? elements would have been better in terms of plot focus, plot depth, as these areas did get lost from time to time. The opening sequence for example was difficult to follow and ??place?? with the rest of the movie.

CHARACTERS

The main character, know as ??man?? and voiced by PostModernChuck, and ??woman?? voiced by Azuresama were integral parts of the movie ??but at the same time almost irrelevant. Not in terms of an ??unnecessary?? roles, but the role character could have been anyone ?? who ??man?? is, why he is doing what he??s doing, where he came from etc is ignored ?? presumably an intentional choice by Del as the character is called ??man?? /??woman??. The person is irrelevant, but it is what ??man?? /??woman?? represents that IS relevant. On the one hand I liked the genericness (real word? Maybe) and lack of identity because it forced us as an audience to remain emotionally detached. On the other hand, I would have liked to know more about ??man?? and ??woman?? in terms of their lives and how they ended up where they are. I think a middle ground of some kind would have worked very nicely. VO??s were, for the most part ok with a couple of good performances, but nothing to get excited by.

WRITING

Writing was good. The angle Del decided to look at the subject matter from was not easy to pull off ?? so in terms of concept, Sparks Fly is well written. Some of the dialogue was very cheesy and clichéd at times and the writing has to be to blame for the confusion that ensues at various points in the non-linear plot. A difficult movie to write, but well done overall.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Some very nice visuals and camera choices and the visuals flowed together well. Some of the overlays were distracting and we felt were unnecessary. Shot from a ??Director??s?? perspective rather than an audience perspective ?? good or bad thing, not sure.

EDITING

Editing was pretty tight, good scene selection etc. VO??s music and effects were all in time and at appropriate places. No shots or sections that really stood out as being highly original in terms of production and editing, but it was clean cut and well timed.

SOUND/MUSIC

Music was very well chosen and used. We particularly liked the opening piece. Volume levels were good, and the choice of music tracks enhanced the viewing experience giving it added depth.

SPECIAL FX (if any)

We appreciate that this movie (in TMO terms) is ??old?? and so we weren??t expecting a plethora of fx, mods etc. I have made mention of the overlays already ?? some worked very well, others proved distracting.

OVERALL

Overall this was a very interesting movie. A unique take on the concept of love and both our attempts and an outsiders attempts at understanding it. Some very nice elements here and it is definitely worth a watch. Could have been made slightly shorter, clearer without loosing it??s impact and parts were a little cheesy. We did feel that the higher message regarding love and humanity was a little lost in the slightly confusing, messy plot but it is an enjoyable watch and a movie that raises some interesting questions.

Cheers

Well, my only question is how did I miss this when it came out?

A truly unique story, combined with excellent, sometimes quirky performances from your actors, terrific fluid camera work, and an amazing score. This movie is without doubt a real gem.

Oh, wait, I have another question....this was made 9 months ago...isn't it about time for your next one to...pop out of the oven, as they say? When it does, please PM me - I don't want to be the last one to see it...again!

Really good film there. well put together, plenty to keep you thinking about and boy did it make me think.

And this is what i thought ..

It was obviosly a well thought out film you didn't just throw it together, so you forgive me if i explain my reservetions as we all realize in reviewing this, im doing so on a different level to most other films on here. This film is obviously a cut above most.

The film moved too fast for me it would have benefited from more dialogue as it was difficult to try and follow most of it first time i watched it.

I understand you probably want the viewer scratching their head trying to figure out what the hell was going on but your in danger of losing the viewer entirely here. the film seemed to move from one section to another too quickly withou giving the viewer precious thinking time. A little more explaination would have allowed the underlying concept to blossom better and also provided the much needed thinking time.

I loved the plot though, love being a powerful word!

I realize im no movie mogul myself but its just my opinion.

Editing 2/4 : The editing needed a bit more work. You had some good cuts and you didn't overuse the panning on freecam, which is good. However there are a few spots that could use improving. There are two scenes that you used that would have been best used in small cuts instead of in it's entirety. The two scenes I am talking about is knife fight, and the most most overused scene in TMO, It aint over yet. Avoid using those scenes unless you trim it down and just use bits and pieces. Another thing that could use a bit of work is the pacing. After you make a movie watch it and see if there are any dead spots, spots that have nothing really going on, see if you can trim those out. Such as the car ride in the beginning, that could have been trimmed a bit.
Dialogue 2/3 : Not bad, just watch the spelling and try to lengthen the amount of time they are on screen, some went by too fast.
Plot/Originality 2/5 : The plot to this movie was a bit hard to follow. Perhaps things will be cleared up in part two, but it does need a bit or work to make it understandable. For example, why did they go and see mr. forget. A little foreshadowing to show that the two men had met before and there is some bad blood between them would also help the plot a bit.
Entertainment 2/5 : The good, It was short and I didn't really feel the need to fast forward through it. The bad, there is little to make me want to come back for the second part, but I will do so anyways, since that is the reason why I watched this part.
Music/Sound 3/3 : Music fit the mood, good job there.
Total : 11/20 - 3 stars - Not bad.

Definately a good movie but not quite my cup of tea.
For me i struggled to keep attention on the movie. I did manage to keep my attention, but as i just said, i struggled in some parts. This is due to the subject and the fact it went for 10 minutes.
I know the movie wouldn't of been as good if it was shorter than the time you chose, but its unfortunate that i am not a big fan of this genre.
The voice overs were good and the editing was spot on.
My only criticism was that it dragged for a bit too long in my opinion. But it is a very good movie.

The plot was like an ingeniously designed Rubix cube, and no I??ve never managed to finish one yet. It??s one of those rare plots I??ve come across that actually makes you think, that makes you look at your screen with a blank stare and say ??what the hell??? There are actually two kinds of that particular stare, the one where you??ve just watched a bunch of random scenes staring chickens fighting robots in a bar, and then there??s this, the one where you struggle to figure out how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Music was an extremely important part in this; the many different selections adding much needed atmosphere at the right moments, voiceovers were quite decent as well. They weren??t so full of emotion that I could call them spectacular, but still a good effort from all involved.

I was quite impressed by the editing, the camera shots and movement were well directed, I thought maybe an occasion scene didn??t need to be there, but then again I do wonder whether it would have the same effect without them.

What you were expecting more? I??m drunk, take your stars and get out of my face.

The music, tone, and style of the beginning really drew me in with a sense of nostalgia and anticipation. I have to admit that somewhere around the 1/4 mark I began losing interest though, perhaps due to some of the scene changes where the pacing didn't seem right and something was lost in transition. The voice actors did a good job, though the sound quality on the woman's voice sounded thin and strained, and in parts the old man's voice was a little too soft. The feedback sound was annoying on the ears, and served more as a distraction than anything else. There was a good use of sets, mods, and props to convey the story, and I loved the premise and the plot which unfolded. Overall, I thought this was a very good movie, with the highlight being the philosophical look at love and consequences.

MoMc Review: 3.9

It was good, but to me, it wasn't great. Technically, it was outstanding, but the appeal wasn't there in this instance.

The music was very good, (read you did it yourself, and you should be proud) -- though my favourite piece was at about 5 minutes as the explanation of what was happening began. The use of the heartbeats and feedback were unsettling, almost disturbing -- indeed, it took me 3 occurrences for me to realise that the feedback sound was intentional.

Visually, it was good. Editing was clean, though I think many of the transitional parts could have had a second or two shaved from them. You presented a consistent style throughout the movie, which is a good accomplishment.

As an aside, I noticed a picture with a bunch of nonsense words on them at about 4:40 -- wasn't sure if this was put there by you or not, but made me think part of it was a dream, since there's a commonly accepted (though false) belief that in dreams, all text is jibberish. IF that was intentional, that itself was a stroke of genius -- if it was a lucky coincidence, just pretend it was intentional ;)

It may be something of a nitpick, but I felt this was more of a Romance/Sci-Fi, than a Sci-Fi/Romance. While we had the alien observers and such, things weren't really aimed at exploring the sci-fi side of it. To me it seemed more like a philosophical look at love, using the idea of an outside observer as its means of touching on scifi, but that itself was not part of the story. For the sake of being a scifi, I would have liked to have seen more exploration into what was actually happening -- I believe it's okay to leave some unanswered questions, so long as you present some answers. Unfortunately in the long run, it's this area that counts most against you.

that was sci-fi?

VO/subbies: 8/10: Good and clear.

Flow: 7/10: while strong and steady, i felt the time pass slowly, tighter story control would help.

Set Dressing: 6/10: Ok, i prefer to have more to make the set your own.

Editing: 9/10: Good and tight, this movies's strength.

WOW factor: 6/10: Too slow for me to get into, wouldn't watch it again.

score: 36/50: 3.5/5: 4 stars; A GREAT movie.

I got the message from the opening scene - every time you kiss someone, something blows up! (Looks like Kim Jong-il had a REALLY good night recently then).

Well, joking aside, I don't think I bought into the mystical notion of love being so powerful that "sparks fly" and cause explosions - nor of it creating a positive energy that must be balanced out by a negative force. Nor really (if that's what was meant) of a life created resulting in another life being destroyed because of overcrowding or lack of resources or other somesuch.

So, in that sense, I`m a lost cause as I didn't buy into the basic premise of the film - nor did the film want to bother teaching the likes of me why I should buy into it. I felt it was being abstract and confusing just for the sake of it on some occasions.

However, it was beautifully made with good use of black screen (which I took to represent each alien communication) and overlays, very good editing and excellent music by the filmmaker. A special mention also to the actress who played the nurse, very nice V.O. there. Unfortunately, I didn't get along with the Chinese man - he was the most important character in telling us what the film was about, but his fake Chinese accent just made the words hard to hear - I didn't get much information out of him on first viewing.

So, it was a treat to look at and listen to, but its message just didn't reach me in a convincing way.

That was a masterpiece! The main thing I loved about this movie was that it was something different that I haven't seen on tmo and it was done so well!!! I really enjoyed each minute of this movie!!! an epic storyline, intruging/interesting characters, with well placed music make this a pleasure to watch!! i throughly enjoyed watching this, i really enjoyed the monologues from Rposhard, who did an excellent performance, but all the voice-cast was amazing too!! Definatly an amazing movie to watch!!! it didn't feel like 11 mins at all!! A very well produced flick and definatly watchable, no doubt!!!
All in all, a very well edited movie with an amazing all star cast, amazing music and excellent use of overlays make this movie have an amazing style!!

* Story/Plot - 8/10:
A good story with a good message. The way the message was delivered though was a tad confusing and unexplained.
* Originality - 9/10:
One of the most original sci-fi romances I've seen.
* VOs/Subs - 7/10:
Honestly from such a great cast I expected so much more. The VOs came of kind of wooden especially during the emotional parts.
* Editing - 9/10:
Some really nice camera work, and editing. Very smooth transitions.
* Enjoyment Factor - 8/10:
It would've been a tad more enjoyable if not so confusing. The message should've been shown to the audience better and not just told.
* Overall - 43/50:
Good movie. Good luck with future projects!

This was one of the most original movies I have seen on TMO so far. I love the idea of love being so powerful it can destroy. It's a frightening idea, and yet is also the way it feels sometimes.
The overlays and camerawork made this movie even more interesting, the vo's were magnificent. I admire your ability to create music too.

This is a very good movie. The effects and camerwork are nice, so are the editing. The music was great, however, where have you gotten it from? Sure it aint copyrighted material? VO's are excellent, even if the volumes changes at some parts.
The story is, in my opinion, a little slow paced at some points, but it still very good. It has a good and thinkworthy theme, and is also quite original for TMO.

One last thing though - isn't is a bit of a cliché using an old chinese man as some sort of a wise guy? :)
Great movie, more people should watch it!

An admirable achievement, although I had the distinct feeling that I am definitely not the target audience... :)

The film branches out like a little puzzle, never resting and always unfolding new facets of the story in a delicate manner. This is achieved through beautiful use of camera and editing.

Special mention and kudos should be given to the voice cast... Rposhard is fast becoming the Alex Guinness of TMO, with a performance that could have been comical - but is actually quite effective.

As to the concept about love being a powerful force, that's where you lost me... but I won't go in detail why, as this is not the place to do this. I'm sure there will be many who will dig it, and so I will quietly keep my thoughts to myself here.

In summary, an admirable movie. Very deserving of the praise it is receiving!!

Interesting poster! Nice narration. Infact, all the VO's were good. The music choices were spot on, they fitted the scenes well. Nice use of Starmaker. The film was 11 mins long, but I never felt that that it dragged at any time. Very good movie! ?(?¿?)?

One mentions that love has many meanings. Perhaps this is one of those meanings that is expressed on film in such a uniquely bizarre way.

Overall, I find the film rather touching and artful.

On the technical side, I did like your use of overlays and modding. Pretty nifty stuff.

There were a few minor things I noticed in regards to editing, such as hand gestures in dialogue, but the overall feel is still pleasing.

Good work!
