Film Description
1st PLACE WINNER in the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival contest, 2006. Over 250 frames of hand-drawn animation. Over three month's work.

Unfortunately the first part,"QUIETUS I" is now offline due to limited studio upload space.

The second part of "QUIETUS" has been unleashed. NOTE: Two of my special effects shots were made in May when I started this project, before S&E was released. Upon rendering, these shots were plagued by the dreaded frame "black out" syndrome and even after four rendering attempts and checking for unintended fade in/outs, they remained. I hope they will not distract too much from the overall experience, and know that my goal is to edit both parts together into a single hi-resolution film (and will thus reshoot and replace these damaged scenes).

My thanks again to my incomparable voice over performers for both parts I and II...
PostModernChuck as Jason Mannings
Bezzer36 as the Sea Captain, and Newscaster
Annette Coronado as Evelyn Jensis
Ray Sanchez Jr. as Captain Holden
Jeff Coronado as Campus Security Chief
*Vesobe as the Sniper and Police Sargeant
Another_New_Dawn as the Reconnaisance Officer
KirinRiotCrash as Officer #1
KOS78 as Officer #2
HagenT as Officer #3
Jason Mabry as Officer #4 and the Dispatcher
ShannonKw as the Phone Voice
JosephKw as Prof. Adam Yardiff, Prof. Thomas Wong, and Campus Security Guard Joseph Wong

*Vesobe was a last minute addition to the cast and thus is not reflected in the film's final credits.

Awards received: Hot Pick, 8EB's 1st place joint winner for 'Hot Pick' nomination, Dulcilicious, Fabbo, JazzX's "Prufrock Award for Outstanding Cinema", and Vesobe's coveted 'Walrus of Impressiveness'.

A story-driven movie such as this one is always a pleasure to watch, and much better than most TV shows. I've definitely enjoyed the Quietus tale, and although Lovecraft did not seem as deep a thinker as I had hoped (at least from the little I know from this flick), the father-son drama had me glued to the screen. I loved the suspense and the weirdness that the camerawork and the voice out of the room brought, as you used the technical difficulty of showing Yardiff to your full advantage. The only part that I felt was a bit odd was when the research assistant was asking herself "what should I do?".

The FX were put to good use here, and brought this story to life. And now I finally know what the correct pronunciation of the word Quietus is. :)

Ever-inventive, clever, scary and perfectly plotted. This movie is a fresh breath of air, using everything to it's advantage, and building the suspense unbvearably high before exploding into a freakish, effects-filled showdown involving some impressivly disturbing images. I loved the wrap-up at the end, as well.
Overall, this movie was brilliant! Excellent job.

"You can't regenerate if you don't have flesh!" Truer words have never been spoken . . . or is it more of a gurgle? What can we say? A Brilliant, tribute that in our opinion, actually surpasses the source material in many respects! QUIETUS, as a whole, is an FX driven and compelling story that combine to show just how quickly things can get out of hand, (tentacle?), as a horrifying chain of events, takes away our very humanity!! Totally innovative, literary and of course, creepy as hell!!!

SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: MAY CAUSE SERIOUS MUTATIONS.

PLEASE add this line to the poster!

I wasn't prepared for this, despite the wait, despite being a part of it (extremely proudly, I might add!), despite knowing when it was being released.

3 months of work...and by god, it shows!

I'm going to add 'unique' to A_N_D's words of description...because it is.

No other horror movie I've seen here on TMO compares to this in terms of storytelling, sfx, creative editing (the sniper scene in particular), amazing use of the freecam and overall cinematic quality.

The VOs were great but, and it's a small but, the overall sound was not too clever in places, often sounding muffled and distorted...but no biggie.

This is another shining example of how to make a quality movie by mastering all aspects of movie making.

Be proud Joseph...be very, very proud!

Weird, warped, twisted, demented, bizarre, bent, cracked, derailed, deranged, unhinged, grotesque, nefarious, wicked ---- bust out your thesauri, kids, if you're looking for words to describe JosephKW's "Quietus II" (and "Quietus 1" for that matter...)

Far from one-dimensional, JosephKW continues to offer thought-provoking and unsettling work. This is a far cry from "Unredeemed" in tone and structure, but the clear message for me here is not the one made by the film - immortality at any cost corrupts absolutely - but that we are watching a very talented and imginative storyteller at work with every new JosephKW production.

I was most impressed, believe it or not, by the film's voiceovered ending - shades of Romero's "Dead" films more than anything by Lovecraft, though his influence here is also clear.

Excellent work, Joseph. I would subtract a star for some echoey VO's, others hard to hear, and some lines falling flat or seeming superfluous, but overall editing, pacing, plot, tone, and structure won out and let you keep it. And I'd be remiss not to mention how impressed I was with -some- of the sfx, not all, but most.

I genuinely cannot wait to see what crawls, shambles, creeps, or bursts out of this studio next.

OMG, that was the best movie I have seen on TMO thus far. The amount of effort and time you put into this has obviously shown and with wonderful results. I was glued to the screen for the entire duration, not a dull scene. Excellent movie m8 6/5 :)

+ Great selection of music

+/- Very nice VO casting and a great performance. No matter some voices sounded echoed, wooden or low...

+ Script very well written and storyline is definitely unique and creative..

+ Backdrops are wonderful it gets even better than the animated overlays come into effect (astonishing).

Overall A very unique, creative and weird story that will make me think twice about taking any medical drug. You definitely have a creative mind with lots of talent... 5 starts stars for creativity...

lol great ending!
The custom work in this film was spectacularly done, and the story, although slightly less mysterious than part one, played out just as well with it's extra horror/action-styled punch.
The characterizations were,as usual,spot-on and the story was involving and fun in a morbidly curious sort of way:-)
I can just imagine the amount of work that was put into this...
Kudos for an excellent continuation...12 pages of reviews isn't nearly enough.

This is a very well-made film, and a suitable conclusion to the first part. You were able to improve your pacing a little, and the camera work was of the same quality as in the first one. The story is conventional, but very good. However, there is one giant flaw, and that is the fact that there is no reason for the father to kill his son. He was just saying how he would find a way to stop it and then he shoots him to keep him safe? That's ridiculous. I understand that you were trying to make this a tragic moment, but his father being shot would be more tragic if his son had to live on without him. Very poor scriptwriting there. It really is a shame too, since that scene was the best directed scene in either movie. Overall, this second part was just as strong as the first, and so I will give you the same score, albeit reluctantly.

It's been a while since I saw this film, but never bothered to leave a review. Well, I thought I owed you one, so here it is...

This was a highly intelligent, well-crafted film. Definately a classic of TMO horror...you are a mastermind. I was mesmerized by your knoweldge of effects, pacing, and atmosphere.

But, as with many horrors, you gave us a powerful, frightening epic only to disappoint us at the end with a sloppy conclusion. I thought it all happened too fast, and the pacing was thrown off because of this. It made me feel unsatisfied and disappointed. Although the effects were great, you didn't make me feel a squeeze a tension, which is what the best horrors will do.

Overall, though, I think you certainly deserve 5 stars. The rest of the film was well made and entertaining...I am astounding by the way you work with the script and let it flow easily. Great job! And great music tracks and SFX as well.

OVERALL RATING:
9/10
5 stars

Another great movie!
Your technical abilities are really quite interesting.
I hope to figure out the slow-mo stuff. Not sure where I'd use it though.
I really noticed how well you use backdrops. For such a simple "effect" it is so effective;).
I have to mention the sniper scene. Really great build up of tension, maybe just a hair too long, but really effective. I think the sniper would have fired as soon as he saw the weapon drawn, but I still thought the scene was well done.
For three months of input it ends up being really enjoyable to watch.
Can't wait to watch next one(in about 3 mins, heehee)

Wow, there really is no limit to your ambition! 3 months huh? I can see why.

The dialogue is spot on, the voice acting brilliant. The scene with the sniper is legitimately tense...I was anticipating that shot to come at any moment. Hitch[eye-hurting-word!] called that showing us the bomb, and worked it perfectly.

I have but one minor quibble, and that's that I thought it was too intentionally funny at points. That's just me though.

This is a superior effort that everyone in the TMO community should take a look at.

That has the most original concept that I've seen so far on this site. It really captures the escence of H.P Lovecraft. All the scenes were shot so well and the music really brought them together. The voice acting was also very well done, they couldve sounded a little better though but everything makes up for that. The ending was amazing and was shot extremely well. 5 stars all the way, your film is now one of my top favorites on this site.

Once again, I'll say that the Quietus sequel was brilliant! I'll also say that I am looking forward to the re-edited version of Quietus. My favourite moment was when the cops raided the professor's house and got sliced n' diced by his mutation! Also, when the professor's friend entered his house and found the boy gradually mutating. How did you create those special effects? When I release my new film (next week) could you also tell me about the special
effects? Many thanks for your review of Mocker. I'm also working on the re-
edited version, following your advice. I'm planning to concentrate on the characters more and explain a bit more about the criminal.
I originally finished the film with Mocker dying and Idaho Bill getting away, but not leaving it open for a sequel. I might release a sequel. I thought that maybe Idaho Bill was the son of a godfather! Thanks for the advice and many great films!

Top class! Really enjoyed it - the whole story is amazing and the voice overs and effects are simply BRILLIANT. All the hard work definitely shows in the final film. I've been desperately trying to think of some constructive criticisms, but I can't think of anything!

Honestly one of - if not the - best film I have seen on The Movies online.

I normally try to resist putting plugs in my reviews but as Lovecraft fans are likely to read this, they might be interested to know that I have made a wee film of "The Statement of Randolph Carter" by the man himself. Nothing like the effects-fest of this, but check it out if you're interested.

What a superb film that was!

Excellent acting, top script, very good music and stellar visual effects. It had plenty of suspense + that creepy voice from upstairs was the stuff of nightmares.

The film had a brilliant climax too.

I also like the way the epilogue was integrated into the final credits with the disturbing baby image as the very last shot.

What's not to like? (Well - the recording quality of the police chief's V.O. wasn't quite up to the same standard as the rest - but that's all I can possibly think of).

Top class in every department.

Wow I, loved the conclusion. I hope you keep up the same work in your future movies. In fact I,'m going to book mark your studio to check and see your future films. I really loved the ending though. It had a real since of creepiness, with the fact it's put on the market. It has a ending very much like Resident Evil or Mouth of Madness(John Carpenter flick) where every thing is messed up. Any way thanks for actually answering my question of how you created that specal effect. Also, I am so glad that you actually reviewed my flick Oddysee. It's been online a month and no one has even watched it. Well thanks for rating it. Hope you keep up the good work. I love the creepy Lovecraft stuff.

I can't really say anything right now, except that you had me up close to the computer screen on this wonderful and greatly done film. It was bone chilling, hair standing and a feeling of horror rushed through my body watching this film. You have done a great job up to now, and it was an honor to be here again to watch your films. I don't know how you do it, but you always kept me watching. I won't leave my lot again, knowing you are here and entertaining me and your fans. Great job. Voice overs was spot on and the acting part was still great. Both son and father was shocking toward the end. I loved the ending also. A rush of fear ran threw my body when the baby at the end showed up. Once again, it was still an honor to be here and I'll have to give you a five star rating. It is the best I can do, I wish I can give you more. Keep those films coming and I'll be there watching.

Joseph, I didn't think it possible, but the second part to this Lovecraftian epic is even better than the first. Your attention to plot detail and characterizations are second to none. I'm also very fond of your camera work, which often tells a story in and of itself.

You are a real Master of horror with big M, Joseph. After watching this movie I know for sure. When I first heard of your Quiteus-project I became very curious as you know. Although I dont watch horrormovies I watched yours. None of your movies has been a B-one so far. So how could I just miss one of my favourite directors biggest projects ever? No, no, no I say. Never!
This was not a usual horror. Not so violent and no blood what I could see. But still really scary in itself. I went pale! I just say "I would rather die than look like a monster for the rest of my life....sorry, immortality". The message is clear. The father did the only right thing killing his own son. He saved him from a terrible fate.
The voices were excellent! As I know you do them all by yourself. The movieposter also drew my attention. Not like the usual poster for horror one see around. That is just very artistically done.
I PM you for my further comments, and about my upcomming warmvoie.

The strangest love story on tmo..

The man with his tentacles could be easily completely ridiculous, this is not the case, He is completely frightening.. Backdrops are awesome, special effects, I didn't understand every details of the story, but the editing especially everywhere in this second part(as the first part) is perfect, I liked very much the sniper scene..

Just great work and Bravo Joseph! I hope you'll do a lots of movies again!!

This is like a TV show it is sooooo gooood! One of the best done movies on TMO. The storyline was very involving, and left you at the edge of our seat. The camera angles were well done, the effects used were very good, too, considering that many movies' ones have ones just for randomness. All in all, this is one of the most well done movies the users on TMO have ever seen so far. The amount of VC attached expresses my gladness at how people are really using the game well.

I should begin with the phrase that this movie is "even better than part I." (which is perfectly true, BTW), but it wouldn't make much sense, since it's obvious that the two parts together make ONE complete, masterfully directed movie. The story comes a full circle, and after watching Part II., the beginning lecture of the first movie suddenly takes a more forceful... more sinister meaning.
So, the story is totally gripping, with completely unexpected twists and heart-chilling dialogues. My only concern about the first one was that it became "predictable" after a while - well, Quietus II. is anything but predictable! I couldn't imagine how the story would end (though I felt that it wouldn't be too happy...). The highlight scene - in terms of the story - was the sniper part and the conversation between the security guard and his father. Again, I had absolutely no idea how that part would end, but the tension was barely bearable.
I can only speak in superlatives about the technical aspects of the movie. I wouldn't ever imagined that it's possible to create such cool monster effects with the Movies editor. (In technical aspects, the last few minutes were a jaw-dropping "nightmare ride" for me.) Flawless editing, creative prop placement and backdrop use, superb soundtrack use, great - and sometimes pleasantly twisted - VOs... everything's perfect. I'm sure that it'll be a Hotpick in no time (just like the first half). :)
(Oh, and let me congratulate for the last few seconds - you managed to give me a couple of bad dreams!)

Even better then the first. This one was great, with alot of twists. I knew you would pull through with the second part. Quite the cliffhanger for the ending too. The movie is spectacular. Sorry I couldn't see it earlier. But it was worth the wait. Great job!

This second half of Quietus will awake Cthulhu from his sleep in the underwater city of R'lyeh. The Great Old Ones are pleased by the intense sniper/office scene that convene the sharply edited tension. The final appearance of the man who seeks to be immortal was of a grotesque yet strangely intriguing nature, although he isn't on par with the ultimate terror countence of great Cthulhu. The animations of the tentacles has that creepy puppetry motion. Overall, a part two worth chanting rituals about.

Well, here are your five stars. I can't say much more than what has already been stated by the other esteemed reviewers. This film is artistically and technically stunning and quite simply, entertaining.Like the first installment, this creation is as good as anything Hollywood puts out- probably better. Wow, this movie makes me feel like I suck worse than I really do. I wouldn't even no how to do some of the special effects in this movie. Very polished, very well scripted.

I love the suspense, love the effects, especially the baby in the end credits. My only criticism, and I'm reaching here, is that maybe you played up the tension btwn. the father and son too much. I thought they might spoon at the end.

Anyway, nice work and I'd love to hear what you have to say about my latest movie - http://movies.lionhead.com/movie/101843.

POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT!
As I sit here writing this, I stroke my tentacles in awe at Josephkw's ode to the dawning of a new age. The acting is superb, as are all the custom effects and the story is riveting, although the glorious ending is known to all by now. The horror elements featuring those who would conspire to deny others the gift of imortality were chilling. Well done, Joseph!

First: Yesterday I downloaded Quietus 1 & 2. Today I rate them.

Quietus 2:
Wow! A little bit better than Part 1! Part 2 is in every part of editing awesome! The scene with the sniper was very exciting & absolutely perfect filmed! Sniper (will he shoot?) - Office (Talking) - Sniper (will he shoot?) - Office (Talking) - Sniper (will he shoot? no, please do not shoot!)
Wow! Such an exciting scene I've never seen on TMO!! PERFECT!!
Backdrops are in Quietus 2 very good, like in Quietus 1!
The story is very good! And the decision not directly to see what happended after Part 1 was very good! The scene in which Joseph was in Yardiff's house was very exciting & good, too!

A Beautifully Made Film, With An Intriguing Storyline
I Have To Say It Was Quite Freakishly Scary In Some Parts!
(The First Time I'Ve Been At Least Partially Scared On TMO!)
I Feel It Was A Little Bit Rushed, And The Monologue Was A Little Basic,
If You Could Put This Kind Of Suspense, And Freakishness, Into A More Human Script,
You Would Have The Best Horror, Ever!
But As It Is, It's Easily One Of The Best,
Well Played!

OMG, Wow I have no words for what I just saw here. This is Even better then the first one. Rarely when one watches the second part to a movie on TMO dose the second half do justic to the frist one but you have out done the best I have seen on TMO with both of these movies. You have done yourself proud with one of the best written storys here. I was tottally amazed with the wonderful special effects and the Animation was just amazing. you kpet me totally engrossed with the whole film. I have downloaded both parts and they are now part of my private collection.

When watching the movie 3 words came to mind, "Kicking serious ass!" That movie was great and had so many good and inovative parts to it. The voiceovers were great (with congrats also going to the voice actors). The whole editing to incorporate tentacles on the monster was grear, and on the picture of the baby made a nice touch. The slo-mo shots of the policeman fighting the monster added to the effectiveness of the movie. The techniques used in the monster fight scene built up great tension. The storyline had no bad points to it and was well scripted. Finally another good point to make is an oscar deserving quote "You can't regenerate if you dont have flesh!" Definately a 5 star movie, Rock On!!!

WOOOOOW-- Im not sure where to begin. This movie was errie, strange, very spine tingleing, and absolutely WONDERFUL all at the same time. i LOVE the storyline. If you think about it from a certain point of view this movie is actually happening in real life. Everyone in one way or another being forced to take drugs. I know this movie was likely not intended to be looked at that way, but it is very thought provoking. Although the story isnt 100% original the twists and turns you added were fantastic!!! The animation was superb, even if a bit choppy, i wouldnt even BEGIN to attempt that much custom work in one of my movies! I am humbled the amount of FX shots that were in this movie, and now have vowed to step up my technical work!!!
Very nice job, deserving of many rewards, and lots of attention! Cant wait to see more of your movies!!!!

Wow, what a great continuation and conclusion to part one! A great story, told in disturbing images, with fantastic special effects, good music and spooky sounds (that gurgling made me shiver!). I loved the slow building of suspense, those moments when you listen to a dialogue and only fear how the person who´s voice you hear from that room might look.. and what might happen next... and the ending was just fitting perfectly. Great work, joseph!

That really sent a shiver down my spine. Excellent story-work with the situations and the characters. So many different good things about this movie, and I haven't even gotten to the modding portion yet. The special effects were all top-notch but it was especially good that they weren't overdone. I really liked this entire story and I'm really glad I watched it. Excellent work.

Well, you've done it. Quietus is no longer my favorite TMO horror movie. But Quietus 2 is now my favorite movie! All I can say is wow! The effects in this movie are amazing, they really made the monster look terrific. The voiceovers are professional sounding.Again your combination of backgrounds and overlays brought this movie to life. The music, editing, and atmosphere were great. It would be a crime if this movie doesn't become number 1 overall. I'm bookmarking this one too. WOW!!! I'm blown away! That is definately the best sequel I've ever seen on TMO!
My expectations were high in the sky after watching Quietus 1, and after watching theatrical genious, Quietus II, I am thoroughly satisfied. You set a good atmosphere, the custom content was spot on, and the VOs were amazing. Oh yeah, I forgot the plot, it was perfect & well thought out. I loved every second of Quietus II.
5.0 stars ~Perfect Score~

A really good horror movie.
Loved the special effects. (there like notting i've seen before)
The storyline and voice actors really fit the parts.
One of the things I really liked are the backgrounds.
The school background, or the class background the the first part.

There might only be one thing I didn't like, in the end you see that child, I don't think It would have been nessesairy to put that in. It gives you a bit ''Dawn of the Dead'' effect. lol I hated that movie.

Anyway's, a one in a kind movie, superb in Voice acting, special effects and storyline.
I'll be waiting for your next movie.

P.s. (Liked the credits, were they tell what happends)

Kos Mini Review:
Part 2 continues the great work started in the first half, and brings it to a superb conclusion. The quality matches the first half, with highlights being the special effects, the drama, and some of the camerawork. The lowlights were some parts of the script were a little weak and some unwanted flickering during the special effects. I had almost written off the ending as being weak, until I heard the credits -- that brought it to a superb conclusion. Overall, I thought this was a superb conclusion of the Quietus story which did not disappoint in any aspect of the film-making. All the best for the future.

It's an original movie with a great storyline, but the subject matter was something I wasn't to interested in. I did enjoy seeing how it unfolds, as the villans are introduced. Some dazziling special effects in this one, especially near the end. The voice acting was great, I didn't have any problem with them at all, some did sound kind of louder than others at times, but thats passable. Besides the lack of interest for the subject matter, I thought this was great and very entertaining film. It also had some great dialogue, including the part where the son and father talked. The humor in there was also a nice touch, though some of it was dry, that was also passable. It's a great movie in my opinoin, keep it up.

At the mention of Lovecraft I had to see this movie, the fact that 250 animation frames were used, even further got my attention, haveing tried some animation myself.
Now FX does not a great movie make, but the animation here was used to good effect. This aint just scrolling titles here folks, its true character animation to show us something we've never seen before! Even better, that the script didnt expose the BOO! factor until the climax of the film. And the story had a great H.P.Lovecraft feel to it...the kind that sets your teeth on edge and makes you feel like things should be crawling on you...but they aren't.
A good solid cast, and attention was paid, not only to the visual effects, but the voice/sound effects also. Good use of backdrops for the office park, and I havent seen that Office set yet...if its a mod, good job.
Three months to make, and all that time shows in this the best horror movie I have viewed this week.
You earned these 5 stars

Ever-inventive, clever, scary and perfectly plotted. This movie is a fresh breath of air, using everything to it's advantage, and building the suspense unbvearably high before exploding into a freakish, effects-filled showdown involving some impressivly disturbing images.

Great movie. Actually reminded me of vintage John Carpenter with the characters and esepcially the music. Some great camera work and again intelligent dialogue which I've come to expect from your movies. I loved the dialogue between father and son just before the shooting and some of the dialogue of Professor Yardiff was inspired 'the cleanliness is next to Godliness' line especially.

All in all a great movie, infact probably transcended what LH intended when they created this game.

The story of a beast created by the aspiration for immortality

Lets begin with saying that the opening is peaceful, it introduces a simple connection creating a deep bond from father and son as well as establishing the principle of forshadowing, we use it so rarely in these movies that even somewhat obvious presentation of the story, becomes a great moment during a dark time of the film.

The voice cast was not the best i've heard, but the job was done, not well, just done. PMC seemed a bit echoy on this and others just seemed distracted or false.

As well, the overlay animations were not "simple" they just seemeded added so they could be there, not because they had to be. They just seemed awkward, off, a bit like we could've lived without them.

Now that i've tackled the negatives, let me dive into the deep ocean of what i love about the film. The only good characters are son and father, and yet the twists and turns and acts committed in darkness for the light, things like this are what create strong characters although admitidedly you could've created a better backgrounded character in the girl.

I LOVE the story ,and the creative ending and you rob me of five stars for the very good shots of father and sniper, the tense feeling your whole film had, and the very ellaborate ending. The film is very good, I advise that you go watch it, i do...GREAT
