A wonderfully emotive movie. The music score really adds to the feel of the film. My one criticism would be the slightly emotionless VO's. They kinda work but when you consider what is going on in this film and the subject of the VO's there really needs to be greater depth to them. Overall i love this movie and will give it a well deserving 5 stars

cheers

I gotta hand it to you. You know what you're doing. Excellent editing technique, camera work, and pacing. Tense yet somber. My only gripe is that the voicework could have used more impact without betraying the apathetic feel you intended -- as it is, the voicework just sounds monotone and lacks the drama that the film needed. But as I said, it's a gripe and does not take away from the overall quality of your excellent work.

The bullets ring out to an unforgiving sky as we're forced to acknowledge the ramifications of our own actions, no matter how good the intention . . . even one of revenge. A tasty and bloody period piece that explores the boundaries of good vs. evil. ~ As if there were a difference.

This film just took my breath away. In only 3 minutes you were able to capture the essence of the western genre. Your cinematography and editing is perhaps the best I have seen. The use of sound was also impeccable and really brings the images to life. The think if you just would have let the last image run a little longer, it would have been more effective. If you were to add some more depth to the story, then I believe you could create something very special here. I will definately bookmark you to see what else you got.

This movie is simply amazing. There's nothing wrong with it at all. The Vo's were excellent and the storyline was superb... you've got talent. I bet you're in the film business or have at least majored in film, because this is real talent.

Whoa, I´m gonna have to get "Stunts & Effects" after all! Your movies show that it opens a whole new world of possibilities in camerawork (and editing).

Plot/Storyline: A narrative prose film which uses imagery , words and music to help deliver its message. The brevity of this film doesn??t allow for background information or character development which was the only flaw in this area.

Editing: Very well edited. Nice cinematographic shots and camera angles. Well scored using the classical piece. Good narration. Stylish camera pans, zooms, and angles coupled with the rapid images and music helps deliver the impact of this film.

Overall: Well done film which provides good impact. Lacks in background information and character development, but strong in impact and style.

Now that was good! It was way better than Dead Fault, and I really like the quick shots of the gun's shooting, and camera shot's. Good film overall.

Andy??s Review:
Technical: From what I understand, it??s Stunts and Effects that lets you move the camera. I think you have set up some very nice shots here. I??m quickly learning that the floating shots are popular. You use them quite well, as you do with close ups as well.

Continuity: Other than some lighting changes here and there. It seems spot on.

The Story: I love a good killer flick and especially those that have well shot, quick fight scenes. I did have to watch the end a couple of times to get it though. Overall great imagery and the music sets an incredible tone. Your gun fights are excellent. A good film, save for a bit of confusion at the end.

Incredible. Simply incredible. How can a movie be so adrenaline-pumping and still so tender and touching at the same time? By the looks of it, you truly know how to handle the free-cam. Pacing and spinning camera-angles seems to be your speciality. Sound effects and music fits like a glove. The story and the voiceover was perfect as well. Everything was perfect in this movie. You just keep up the good work, I can't wait to see more from you.

GREETINGS FROM L.M.A.O. STUDIOS!

Brilliant!

The tone of this film was very captivating and intriguing. The editing and sound fx melded in heart pounding unison. I recognize the theme song used in the movie Platoon, so that took me out of the story unfortunately. However, it dint diminish my overall feeling of this film.

The actual voice recording need a bit of polish as it sound recorded. I suggest you fade in and fade out on your dialog in the future, it takes away the in and out clicks and reduces the sound of silence clashing with background noise of VO's.

The gunfire was one of my favorite part of this film. Very tarintino/spielburg sounding. Excellent work!

Overall I really enjoyed this piece of art, despite possible copyright music issue, and will be officially bookmark by L.M.A.O. Studios.

Excellent work my friend. The way the movement fits with the action and what's going on I really felt for the character as he went through these memories or thoughts or real-time action, not knowing exactly what was going on, but invested nonetheless. An excellent short film, my friend, with a lot of great editing, camera work and sound-design.

"the ringing is a 'head clearing' feeling"... I heard that!! Effective film, wish this one was longer, liked it that much. Keep up the outstanding work. Interesting storyline as I totally follow up on implied Columbine event, to this day. Outstanding entry to competition. Great music. Thanks for posting in my review thread.

Story: 5/5
VOs: 3/5
Genre Fit: 4/5
SFX: 5/5

Average: 4/5

Suggestions: Solid movie. Nice editing work, and the music fits very well. Nice spin on the action genre, very emotional instead of just lots of things going boom. Only problem I ssee in this movie might also be it's biggest kudo. If it is, it should be 5/5. If the emotionless narration was meant to juxtapose the very emotional story, this IS a 5/5 story.

With this film you affirmed my belief that a real film could be made here. Not just a compilation of set scenes - but moving, breathing, filmmaking. Bravo.

If you could have filmed it with actors, and shot the same - it could you win you awards in the real world.

Title: Loss Of Empathy

Action: 5-5
Originality: 5-5
Editting: 5-5
Sets/Scene's/costumes: 5-5
VOs/subtitles: 5-5
Music: 5-5

Average score: 5-5 stars.

Overview: Loss of empathy is nothing short of BRILLIANT! This is the film TMO has been waiting for! I love these style of movies, an the feel you get watching them! The opening sequence with that colorful vibrant tree already had me attached! Im a huge fan of the foreign films, such as the makers of "Hijack" and "Unfaithful" but Michael Barnes has stunned me with "Loss of Empathy". The camera movement was unbelieveable! I have seen this film on TMO for some time now, an I always loved the poster, although i never took time to watch it! Well my mistake has been erased, this film makes me want to meet Barnes today!

Everyone should see this film, an it should be and stay in the #1 slot for a long... long... time!

Poster Review: 5-5 easy! The poster is amazing! I love the colors, an feel!

Plot: 5/5 A very interesting plot. Never seen anything like it before on TMO.
Editing: 5/5 Really liked the sound effects and the editing in this film.
Dialogue: 5/5 The narration fit in very well with the scenes.
Overall: 100%= A. Really great job on this film. Liked the use of music (heard it before though...say in Platoon and The Elephant Man). Can't wait to see more from you in the future.

Competition Review:

I have to tell you straight up, you are in the #1 spot in the competition right now and it's going to be TERRIBLY hard to get in front of you.

Everything in this movie struck me to my very core; the music, the camera work, the action.

The action and dazzling sound effects took me by surprise and would have only worked with your GENIUS camera work. I am so impressed with this films voice and you should really put this in for hot pick. It will most undoubtedly win.

The music was magnificent. (Especially Adagio for Strings; which worked perfectly with the movie and created a sense of no hope.)

Amazingly done Michael. You truly have a gift, don't let it go to waste.

In one word, WOW. I was expecting this to be good, but not that good. The imagery and mood in this movie was just fantastic. Music was chosen perfectly to add to the atmosphere. Your custom gun shot SFX sounded so much better comapared to the ones in the game, it really shocked me how real they sounded. VO's were perfectly done, full of emotion. The shots were incredible, stylistic to the extreme, but still keeping the emotion. In my honest opinion, this is the most stylish movie I have seen on TMO, and definitely one of my favourites. Amazing work, keep it up. Bookmarking as I type!

Wow. . . That was Awesome! I really enjoyed that great camera work. I thought the film had a "Gladiator" like feel to it, what with the cuts to the tree and everything. I liked your choice of music for the piece. Overall: Outstanding!

A Critics Center and Sweat Awards Review:
Great job on this. your editing skills are just awesome. Your VA was superb. your whole story was excellent. I can't even beleive such a great movie was made. Your freecam lacked nothing. now to the review.
Literally this had me at the edge of my seat just enjoying the way you used the camera, you just evolved other blah scenes into spectacular parts of the movie! This by far was the best 3 minute movie ever. It was like everything a movie made by TM should have. You utilized your game and I commend you for that.
Overall this film has taken it to a new level. It was awesome, spectacular. Everything a movie should be. I have nothing to tell you to improve. This was by far, one step above all other mvoies I've seen
Let's just see how this stands against the other contestants of The Sweat Awards. I have a strong feeling this will be bound to win something, but you never know....
5/5 Well earned. Keep this kind of work up. Bravo.

Packing some truly dazzling cinematography and startling sound design, Loss of Empathy demonstrates the virtuosic cinematic capabilities dancing at the fingertips of the director. This movie came out of nowhere, to be honest, and I found myself shellshocked with its poetics and artistry, its non-linear approach to storytelling, its razz-a-matazz of light and sound. The ending actually made me a little weepy eyed, with its music and narration bringing the understated tragedy of the story to its crescendo. I am in awe of this movie ?? my pithy, pathetic review does not do justice to how moved I am by this short ?? though by no means small ?? film.

Truly a marvel.

This movie shows a lot of potential. The narrative was excellent, really setting the mood. The action sequences were well-handled also but there was a certain touch of class about the opening scene which draws you in to the movie.
My main complaint is that the camera moved around far too much for it's own good. Static camera shots are just as effective as moving ones, in fact sometimes more so.
Keep up the good work.

Very powerful and intense movie. The voiceovers were well-done. The camera moved around a little too much for me - I would have liked a few static shots to give my eyes a rest.

Great music choices.

We don't need no stinking badges:

VO/ subbies: 9/10: Good and clear with a well read scripts, just a little background noice to be cleaned up from the background.

Flow: 9/10: Great and succinct.

Set Dressing: 8/10: You get 3 points for the tree.

editing: 9/10: clever use of angles and editing, nice to watch.

wow factor: 8/10: It tries so hard to be deep, but it falls short for me, great production all around though, but not enough to make me want to watch it again.

score:43/50: 4.3/5: 4 stars = A GREAT FILM.
