Film Description
1st Place Winner of the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival. Winner of MoMc's BEST HORROR award. Hot Picked. An original story inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft. My goal was to create the feel of a theatrical feature-length film (without actually making a 90 minute TMO movie) by focusing on character development, entwined relationships, sub-plots, and visual effects.

My thanks to my great voice over cast:
PostModernChuck as Jason Mannings
Bezzer36 as the captain
Annette Coronado as Evelyn Jensis
I did the voices of Prof. Adam Yardiff, Prof. Thomas Wong, and Security Guard Joseph Wong.
Thanks also to Daniel Tidwell (PhantomRaul) for his haunting works "In the Chill of the Night" and "Singing in the Storm". Also to Brett Cummins for his gospel song (which seems to be a favorite among those who viewed the Quietus trailer).

I also did the visual and sound effects, with additional sound provided by Bezzer36 (thanks again Bezzer).

Q&A This section deals with some of the queries of my reviewers.

Q: Why did I include the scene with the security guard?
A: He is a crucial character in the next installment and needed to be introduced, as well as establishing his relationship with his father.

Q: Why did I use a Christian gospel song for the end credits?
A: Many who watched my Quietus trailer requested that I include this song in my full-length film. Originally it was not my intent to split this film in two and the song would not have been utilized, but my last minute decision to present this in two parts gave me the opportunity to grant their request.

Q: When will the ending be released?
A: QUIETUS II has been released now. Please view it at http://movies.lionhead.com/movie/100457

Awards received: Best Horror winner from MoMc, Hot Pick, Dulcilicious, Fabbo, Greenglade's "Diamond in the Rough", 8EB's 4th place winner for 'Hot Pick' nomination, the "Prufrock Award for Outstanding Cinema" by JazzX, and Vesobe's coveted 'Walrus of Impressiveness'.

The heavily sought after Quietus has finally arrived . . . and was it ever worth the wait! Technically innovative, on many levels, superior storytelling, plus, it completely keeps with it's Lovecraftian feel in structure, timing and terror! A solid horror film with a depth and effort not often encountered. ~ Kudos!

Mesmerizing and truly startling, the first part of Quietus spreads its sinister tenticles all over you until it coils around your slender throat and strangles you to death with one final, horrifying image that will leave many breathless and truly terrified. How did he do this? Through pure cinema craftmanship, that's how. JosephKW, hot off the heels of his many successes, gives us a movie that goes beyond the pale of what can and cannot concievably be done in this community, treading through uncharted territories few of us could even imagine. That Joseph modestly calls this a "traditional" horror film serves only to ignite the hyperbole that he will not provide, but I shall -- Quietus is everything you've ever dreamed of horror amplified with Lovecraftian lore, technical wizardry, dense character development, and an intricate plot that pulses pure terror. I am truly proud to have been a part of this.

Joseph, once again, makes me green with envy with his aural and visual artistry as well as his astounding abilities as a storyteller. Your use of backdrops, bluescreen effects, and freecam leaves me scrambling around, trying to figure out ways I, too, can make my movies look so beautiful and cinematic -- and yet the way you hover over these characters and watch them grow and develop shows that you're not some flash-in-the-pan visual maestro, but a true artist who will not compromise his vision for easy reviews. Performances were spot on all around (except for mine... but I always say that).

I have learned much about the craft of moviemaking from watching this film. For that, I thank you.

Joseph, you pornographic wizard, you've done it again! I simply cannot wait for part two!

Stunning.

Probably the most cinematic qualities of any movie I've seen on TMO thus far.

Joseph, you have so many tricks up your sleeve that I seriously doubt there's any room left for your arm in there.

The wonderful thing is, I've seen many a person on the forums and in the reviews for your movies asking 'how did you do that?'...and I've never seen you tell!

Why is that wonderful?

Because as long as you keep these amazing techniques to yourself, we will continue to be mesmorised by your work...a great magician never reveals his tricks!

And I love the work here!

I've seen some 12 minute movies here that quite frankly, have bored me to death.
Quietus 1 spends 12 minutes simply introducing us to the characters and giving us all a bit of background on things to come, but it is done with such style and cinematic flare that you forget it's made with the movies game.

This sucks you in and holds you in place for those 12 minutes simply because of the astonishing attention to detail in every department...great storytelling, wonderful characters, awesome sets and sfx, inspired music choice and brilliant VOs.

Sherwin commented about the stretches without music, but this I felt, just added to it's movie-esque qualities, particularly during conversation scenes.

I've been contemplating making a full length movie with 'the movies' for a while now...Quietus is a large step in convincing me that it would work, but only if I had all of the amazing talents highlighted above!

Brilliant Joseph.

well what else should i have expected but another finely crafted movie from josephkw....

very nice set intro movie to what looks to be something real cool. I loved the charcters and the conflicts created due to generation gaps. There are classic horror elements like the old mysterious book that reveals some strange practices and leads one man to follow in order to acheive is goal (which i can only assume right now to be love).

Smart dialogue as usual....but like i said before, what else should i expect?

anyways really enjoyed it and loved the fresh look you gave everything..

I've enjoyed it a lot, Joseph! :)

I haven't been watching a lot of movies, so I may be a bit out of touch with TMO right now. But I feel this movie had its act together, and offered some seriously good adaptation of a work that is not very well known to me.

In terms of the moviemaking, there is plenty on display here to please. The extensive backdrop work brings a certain picture book quality that has its charm. The voiceover work is also solid. One thing that bothered me a little bit were long stretches without music and not a lot of ambient sounds. I think these are key to horror movies, but this seems more a scifi/horror hybrid.

Anyway, overall very enjoyable. Hope to see the end of this.

Truly Amazing, I can not wait for the second part. I love the use of Real life images (like you have done in previous work)and how you blend them together. great build to the end, and the use of the camera (Looking for proff's body, and the quick snap to shower like a head snap). The ships captain scene aswell was well executed. Truly Amazing work you have done here.

Take Care

Initially I was put-off ever so slightly by the premise that was dictated during the first few minutes of the film, since this story of a sort of fountain of youth elixir has been used many times before. However, your story quickly changed course and became a very intriguing and effective horror thriller. The ending was also very well-conceived and incredibly surprising. I'm not sure about the monster effects, but since they were only used in one frame it wasn't much of a distraction. I feel that it will be difficult for part 2 to live up to this, since you will likely have to show this effect more than once. You had some pacing problems and some of the dialogue was less than stellar, but you built up tension very well. I had also seen some of the camera angles before, but I still give this film the maximum score.

Thank God... I was beginning to think I would never rate a film with 5 stars ever again.

An absolutely exceptionally done story.
I found myself drawn into the story just as if I was sitting in the local movie theater...no small accomplishment indeed.
Perfectly crafted and presented.

I thought I'd already reviewed this film :0 I'll review it now.
All I can say is 'WOW'. I think this was one of the first films with those awesome special effects and although many a studio has used this type of technical wizerdry, yours are still the best! I love the use of backdrops in the scene outside the university.
Great voice overs and use of sound FX, very professional.
Overall, a fantastic movie, and a milestone for TMO horror. WELL DONE!

ia cthulhu fhtagn! The stars are right!

So I thought I was being clever by adapting From Beyond, and granted, it's only my second movie, but I feel shamed. Quietus is brilliant. The technical superiority is obvious, but the fact that you use it to tell a proper story instead of getting carried away with FX shot after FX shot is impressive. As time permits, I'll be viewing the rest of your library...expect more reviews.

I'm a fan of Lovecraft too and I have to say you recreated a perfect Lovecraftian atmosphere.
Great characters, great VO, great customization.
Simply perfect.

Quietus is my favourite movies game Joseph kw! The special effects were outstanding and the story was brilliant. The same goes with Quietus II. It is a classic example of how a horror movie should be made. when i'm 18, I am going to be an indepentant filmmaker. I'd make the Quietus films into a live-action movie, but my future is, of course, uncertain. Don't forget to write a review for my film, Mocker! I'm happy to say that I also enjoyed Unredeemed!

Sweat Awards Review:
Due to personal issues Sweatyshoulder could not review this himself, but I am an authorized judge and he will be checking them over eventually.

That was a great movie with a mysterious ending, that really made me want to see the next one. I'll start with the beginning of the movie. It was a great way to start it off, and it really had me interested, and wanting to see the rest of the movie, and that is exactly what you want to do at the beginning of a movie. The editing throughout the movie was flawless, and there were some great camera angles too. The voice overs were perfect. They were clear and easy to understand, and you spoke with emotion. The music in this movie was great. It went along perfectly with what was going on in the movie, and it made it a lot better to watch. You also had some great sound effects, especially at the end. The plot in this movie was great. It had my attention for the entire time, and after I saw the ending, it made me want to watch the next part. I hate a plot that is just plain and predictable, but this one definitely wasn't. It was a very deep plot with a few twists that I didn't see coming. It was also very original. It wasn't anything like any movie I have ever seen before. Overall this was one of the best horror movies I have seen and you did a great job making me want to watch this one after I saw the beginning, and making me want to watch the next one after watching the end.

Let's see how this stands against the other contestants of the Sweat Awards.

A brilliant piece of storytelling with an atmosphere like butter thanks to the excellent acting, sound effects, camerawork and music. The visual effects were very good as well.

I love the style of HP Lovecraft. HIs works f horror make people like Stephen King and Wes Craven look like their writting espisodes for some kid show some where. Anyway, I really liked it. As I, do about anything that HP Lovecraft created. The only writter that had the ability to completely creep me out. And I, am so glad that you chose it to make a movie after. You actually chose one that I, have not read, so I, am really looking forward to the second half because I, don't know what is going to happen. It was paced perfectly with suspense. And the end. I loved the end. But have a question aboput it? How did you do it? I mean, I don't even have a clue to make someone mutated like that on my copy of the movies. Maybe I,should look harder to find out. Any way awesime job.
P.s. The off the wall "we have a awesome god"song during the credits really put a chilling feel to things especally right after a scene were some guy had just died.

P.S.S. Please visit my studio some time Loslunesfilms, and if and when you do, please please please!!!!! Review my movie Oddysee. No one has even looked at it.

Great!

Dark, brooding and, like you say, focusing on character development really gives this the feel of a full-length movie in the space of 12 and half minutes!

"Lovecraftian" is a word that get chucked around far too commonly often these days - with very few living up to the claim. This does (and there can be no higher compliment).

An excellent Lovecraftian story. Excellent plot and well written storyline. Good dialogue.

Editing: Very good use of backdrops. This time you implemented them into the movie much more. The telling of the tale on the ship scenes used the backdrops appropriately. Excellent voiceovers more than set the mood. You did a great job with professor Yardiff. Great special effects. This is the most elaborate effect you have presented so far and it was perfect.

Pacing: You roped the audience in from the beginning had the slow simmer going with the tale of the abomination and the ending of part 1 was great.

Overall: Excellent job. This was a great job you did. Excellent story full of internal drama as well. Looking forward to part 2. This is a highly recommended film and definitely earns a Green Glades Studios Diamond in the Rough.

So..I will watch now part II!
What can I say?? The use of backdrops is simply wonderful, first time I believed that they were real sets, especially in the university, really awesome on this point!

I just noticed a small and not important detail, the young man has different haircuts lol(4th minutes by example)..

For the scenario, it seems great, I didn't understand a lots of things in this movie(you know that's not my native language), son I have been impressed by the atmosphere, the ambiance!
At beginning, I didn't understand why this movie was classified as a horror movie, yes the atmosphere was strange, and the music a bit horrible and repetitive lol!

And at the end, I have understood why, it's classified as a horror movie.
Simply great! I watch part II now!

Wow, a brilliant orriginal lovecraftian story! Ties in perfectly with his world and was very thorough in creating tension and rising intrigue, just like following the characters in the books. On a technical note the VOs were really well done and the editing and camerawork were superb. But i think many will agree that nothing matched that shock at the end, the mesmerising shadow that must have taken time and patience to become so impressive. Very well done!

An absolutely wonderful horror to watch, it was incredibly cinematic and it had so many visually crafted scenes that brought a smile to my face. It was a classic horror tale that was told exceptionally well. the 12minutes wizzed by too fast honestly and I wish it was longer. That is saying alot for 12minutes which by most peoples standards, a long film. I personally enjoy longer films as I get to get into the story properly and boy you managed to do that well. The dialogue was perhaps some of the smartest and sharpest ive seen to date. Well done on this Masterpiece!! a Must see for all!

5 very deserving stars. (Should get more stars than that if it was possible.)That was a great movie. The story kept me enthralled. The voiceovers were excellent. The backgrounds were excellent. Felt like a Hollywood movie. The sound effects worked perfectly. It was very creepy. The music worked very good. The monster at the end was awesome, not relying on the game monsters you used backgrounds and overlays very well to make an animate monster of your own. A know a lot of work went into this and you are very talented. This is my favorite creature horror film on TMO. Looking forward to part 2 and I'm bookmarking this one. Keep up the good work. Your on your way to the top of the charts. Now I hope this won't annoy you, but will you rate my movie for me? http://movies.lionhead.com/movie/79550

*MoMc Review*

One of my favourite TMO horror film-maker is at it again which seems to be his most ambitious yet. This was a pretty hard movie to judge as I was struggling to give it a four or the truly classic rate of five stars so I had to watch it again and as you can see, I went for the latter.

The reason why it was a struggle for me to give a rating for this movie is because alot of this movie was mostly dialogue which isn't a bad thing as I throughly enjoyed your previous films which was heavy-dialogue but I felt in this movie, afew scenes seem to drag out the plot. However, I had taken into the account what you typed in your "about this movie" section and I feel it is hard to see if those moments will pay off until the second part comes along. However, what works really well with this movie is you set out to create a feel of a theatrical feature-length film within TMO and it pays off well.

Another thing which works exceptionally well was the build-up. I think the storytelling was spot on, the editing was done very nicely and the VO were pretty impressive as each voice actors/actress were clear in delivering their lines. The custom work had to be the best part within this movie (great little backstory of the natives within the book!) as it appears alot of hard work went into it...especially the infamous SPX at the end which was truly creepy (I noticed he closed the door twice but meh...its really nothing) which left me watching that scene a couple of times due to its sheer terror and creepiness.

Overall, I think the few scenes I complained about dragging the film out was to create the "feature-length" feel you want on TMO and I'm proud to say you managed to do it effectively enough to give this a 5 stars rating. I hope to catch part two to see what other "terror" alies ahead! Great work!

Sigmund and the Sea Monsters:

VO/subbies: 8/10: clear and consisce, but seemed as if you were standing in a hall. It was distracting.

Flow: 8/10: While slow and plodding, it was not predictable which covers up the speed nicely.

Set Dressing: 10/10: Excellent use of backdrops and props creates the impression of an actual university.

Editing: 9/10: no real faults. nice SFX with the end and the hallway outside the bathroom.

WOW factor; 10/10: Excellent. I downloaded it and watched it twice.

score: 45/50: 4.5/5: 5 Stars, THIS MOVIE IS FABBO!

Why did I wait so long to watch this?!? Excellent beginning to a horror film. The pace was just slow enough to really draw me in, while fast enough to keep me riveted and watching. The special effects were excellent and well-placed. Freecam was used to perfection to set certain moods. The dialogue wasn't the best, but it still moved the plot along well. A very convincing monster film so far. Can't wait to see the next part.

Excellent intro, merging the narration into the professor's lecture. Excellent use of backdrops throughout to create some unique environments.

The conversation outside the university was good for establishing the basis for the plot and the relationships between the characters, but I thought that this scene went too long. The professor's last line in the scene was unintelligible. The brief conversation between the boy and girl was good, but then the conversation in the library was on the lengthy side again. Three consecutive conversations with nothing in between was starting to get a bit much.

The narration during the book reading was excellent, along with the backdrops. It is unclear how he made the connection between the book and the computer search, so this step in the plot progression looked a little contrived. The bedroom scene was excellent, through the use of the answering machine and dialogue. The only thing is that the professor's mention of money seemed out of character for somebody obsessed with knowledge.

The scene at the professor's house was mixed. The boy's VO's and motivation didn't seem to match up; this character's portrayal was confused. Loved the selective use of the 'first person' freecam shots. Good use of sound effects and special effects. The ending credits make me grin every time.

Overall, I thought this was an excellent movie that reproduces the setting and feel of the Lovecraftian universe very well. All the best for the future.

Some of us dabble in making movies while filmmakers like Josephkw make it into a higher art form. Quietus1 takes us into a world of horror reminiscent of classic horror movies of the past, relying on storytelling to build suspense rather then flashy special effects. The custom scenes woven into the backstory are well done and add a level of production exceeding most on TMO. The acting is great on all levels. I can't wait for the conclusion.

For this review, I shall call upon the great Cthulhu...

"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtan~!"

"Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn~!"

"Cthulhu R'lyeh fhtagn~!"

Hmm...okay, he says this movie has everything going for it. The Lovecraftian reference, the opening lecture scene, the story book style telling of the ancient lore, the story on eternal life and the things that reside beyond man's mind, and the cliffhanger ending with that tentacle.

And finally, Cthulhu demands you release part two soon :P

The heavily sought after Quietus has finally arrived . . . and was it ever worth the wait! Technically innovative, on many levels, superior storytelling, plus, it completely keeps with it's Lovecraftian feel in structure, timing and terror! A solid horror film with a depth and effort not often encountered. ~ Kudos!

Beautiful work, my friend. Truly beautiful work.

Ok, where to start. First of, ol' Lovecraft would be VERY proud. You've the hubris, the jealousy, the little rusting corrupting secrets in normal human hearts underpinning the arrival of something born of elder gods and madness. Spot on.

Technically? I can't fault this movie. I saw no glitch, spotted no error, found no shot or cut that wasn't flawless. Furthermore, almost every scene had a touch of genius to it. Beautiful in every detail, and with that Goethe "touch of the bizarre" all the way through. From the opening credits through to the closing credits. Perfect overlays, backgrounds and freecam.

I'm especially impressed with your solution to the problem of how to represent a crowded lecture hall. Inspired.

This movie is intelligent, witty, sneaky, menacing, human and inhumanly good. I don't think I can recommend this movie enough; it's without doubt one of the more capable, intelligent and complete movies I've seen on TMO.

Cthulhu legends in a digital age. Be proud of yourself, JosephKw. you deserve it.

Really quite excellent. Pretty good voice acting throughout. Stylish opening sequence, and it generally kept the mood all throughout. It could perhaps have been a minute or two shorter (ie, the security guard dinner arrangement sequence felt unneccessary). The stand out scene was the flashback story to the crew of the ship encountering the natives. Fantastic sequence.

But what was with the christian music at the end?

Stunning piece of work. Don't know why but I found this hypnotic.
Your professor character is both scary and tragic, sort of an archetypal classic horror villain. I'm not familiar with Lovecraft, so apologies if I'm stating the obvious.
Completety agree that you have given this movie a real feel. The depth of characters is nothing short of superb. The way you've used the freecam and music makes them very real. The narration and some of the still scenes are well brilliant.
Is that a cameo by the way from you at the start. Sort of a la Hitch[wash your mouth out!]? Your imagery at times reminded me of 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari', a true Auteur movie. Especially when the guy walks in the bathroom.
Simply awesome. Now I'm intrigued by where this will go, please PM me when you release the sequel.

Loved your review by the way, I always say art needs to be defined by the viewer not the artist, I too consider that you make what should be a game an Art form as well.

AWESOME. Simply awesome. Those were the words that came to my mind when I started watching this movie. When I reached the final frame, those words were still in my mind, but this time with capital letters. :)
I'm an avid Lovecraft-fan ("Crhulhu fhtagn!"), so I was eager to see this movie. I was rather skeptic, too - the Lovecraftian universe deals with unimaginably horrible monsters and the idea of cosmic evil, and THESE things are almost impossible to accompish with this children-firendly, cartoonish, bloodless Movies editor. But you overcome this problem remarkably. How? Let's see...
THE PLOT is dark and original. The beginning with the professor's lecture is a bullseye. The viewer is instantly immersed in the unnerving atmosphere, and though nothing horrible happens till the end, but we constantly have the discomforting feeling that something evil is going on, and we cannot do anything to stop it... After the professor reads the book, the plot becomes somewhat predictable and less original, but by that time, the inganious directing and the visuals have already gripped our attention. (Also, nice tip of the hat towards H.P.L.'s Miskatonic University.)
THE VISUALS are simply amazing. We (myself included) are constantly complaining that there are so few sets, and everybody knows them... and bang, you suddenly show me a classroom, an university entrance, a campus gardem... even the old sets (like the library) look completely fresh in this movie! The custom backgrounds are amazing, especially in the final, totally devastating horror scene! (Also, great free camera use, especially in the last suspense scenes.)
THE SOUND is flawless. The voice actors are totally indistinguishable from professional actors, each of them did a wonderful job. The music is good, too (though the last track didn't fit into the mood of the movie).
I'm deadly serious when I say that this movie raises into a new level the quality of TMO movies. In fact, I place it above even HIGH HOPE SANITARIUM, because while that movie used to full extent the possibilities of S&E, but your movie goes beyond even that point. (Not to mention the complexity of the story and the characters...)
Do I have any complaint? Yes, I do. :) As I said, the genuinely creepy story becomes unoriginal and predictable beyond a certain point, and becomes an old "hide-and-seek" horror movie. It's not bad at all, it's still amazing, but after the great beginning I expected something more... Well, perhaps in the sequel!
Even though I cannot see into the future, I can say one thing: this movie will be a hotpick!

What can I say? I love your movies. Every one is polished to perfection.

The Voice overs are once again of a phenomenal standard and to put them with the gripping story that you told is a stroke of genius. This movie is truely a masterpiece.

I cannot wait for the next part, if its half as good as this one I will be pleased. But knowing the movies you make the second will dwarf this movie in its spectacular light of brilliance.

Wow! Thats all you can say about this movie is wow! Every thing was right with it. Every last detail. From the movie to the voice overs to the storyline. It had all the elements that a movie needs. For one thing, it had a great voice over line up. The voice overs fit the charcters well, and went along smoothly. Plus, the great music was a great touch. I think the music is the best part of a movie. If you don't have good music, then the movie wont be all it can be. The special effects at the very end were very nice. And finally, the meaty storyline was spectacular. It was a great plot, and you could tell your heart and soul were put into this movie. And for that I applaud you.
