The future setting on which this movie is based, I created several years ago for a roleplaying game, and have since written a few short stories in this setting. The characters and plot for this particular story were created brand new for the Guerilla Competition. I wanted to experiment with the cool new sci-fi sets and props, but don't be fooled into thinking this is a tech demo.

In an effort to aid understanding for those who want to know more, here are some production notes. What we see on the screen is only a tiny snippet of the larger story.

(Warning, spoilers)

- Habitat Theta is the large spaceship that is destroyed in the opening action sequence. The Habitats are home to thousands of people and act as small cities floating through space.
- Habitat Vectra is the large spaceship on which the remainder of the story is set. The opening conversation in the shuttle occurs while the Lieutenant and her new wingmen are being transferred to the Vectra for a new assignment.
- The Deltrai are an advanced alien species that destroyed Earth several hundred years ago. The surviving humans scattered across the stars to flee the same fate, and gradually groups like the Terran Empire have formed to lay claim to their new homes.
- The PsiCorps are genetically enhanced humans, cloned and grown in vats as part of the GenClone program. They serve the Terran Empire unswervingly, and are said to have telepathic and psycho-kinetic abilitiies (read: Jedi mind tricks).

I wanted this story to be strongly based around the characters. In some ways the plot is predictable given their exposition in the first dialogue, but in other ways it is not so obvious. The ending is left deliberately vague, and with several key questions unanswered. The viewer is left to make their own decision as to what is the truth.

The brilliant and poetic title of this film is only the lush beginning of this truly magnificent and thrilling film. Utterly perfect in every aspect of a real action space film this is a treat not only for the eyes but for all the senses.
A great story is the strong foundation for this highly entertaining work. Wonderfully creative sets and breathtaking special effect imbue this film with grandeur and importance. The best sci-fi I have ever seen on TMO.
The voice work is super as is the expert editing. A lot can be learned by a sharp viewer on how to make a fast paced and exciting work by viewing this min-masterpiece of cinema.
A Thousand Diamond Droplets easily earns this reviewer raves and the MGM Golden Seal of Approval!

Review for the Guerilla Challenge Volume 4

Story: (4/5) The story seemed fairly simple if the audience managed to figure out what??s going on after their senses have been numbed by the first space fight. It reminded me of a mixture of many classic Sci-Fi??s out there.

Creativity: (2/5) Intriguing to know that this scenario is one you created years ago, but at times it doesn??t feel truly alive enough. My main concern is the theme isn??t followed very well, I can see you were trying to go for a different approach which can be the key to success on creativity, but I thought this went to far off track.

Sound/Music: (3/5) Didn??t like a lot of things about the voiceovers, the parts that were played by each person didn??t sound right and there was some emotion put into it, but it seemed so forced half the time, which meant I didn??t feel like they were actually in a fighting situation. This reflected on the first battle as well, while the second was much better in atmosphere, but shorter. Music was very good; it??s so hard to come up with something of a space nature that works.

Editing: (5/5) Fairly solid editing throughout, scenes were tightly knitted together, most of the time taken in this film was used well, there was no messing around.

Overall Score: (14/20) ?? Maybe a tad disappointed, and suspecting you may have gotten to the point where you??re a victim of your own success, as I sort of expect all your movies to be top class. This one was defiantly a great flick mind you, just not outstanding like some of your previous creations, plus as I??ve said, to me it didn??t seem very well connected with the competition theme.

Good opening sequence. Happy to see Jackiethepeapod in the credits. Communications VO sounded appropriate. The movie text description on the film page is very useful. However, from a movie standpoint it just sort of jumps into things, hard to know what this sci-fi universe is about, or why we should identify with the characters. The bug angle makes it seem like Starship Troopers and the movie glosses the role of habitats. The PSI Corp role isn't explained well, and it sounds like it's from Babalon 5.

Editing was well done, and good use of the near future sets. VO performances at times are brilliant at others some of the performances seemed a little wooden.

Overall, I like the concept of this stark sci-fi setting and use of the space scenes. The movie itself seems more like part 3 or 4 of a bigger series than the first movie which made it difficult to latch onto. Look forward to see if you continue to develop this so we can all have a cool trip.

it was good. the poerty was a good. the story was ok. but i needed more details. it seemed like it was rushed. you cuold have made it into a 10+ min movie to really get it.

Excellent..Really great story & the editing & scenes were really well done.
VO's were very good too, throwing your tongue around a few different voices too Kos..cool. It was Action from the start & never really dulled at all.
You fit a lot into the 6 odd mins and made it an enjoyable Sci Fi ride..
I also liked how toward the end there in the Subway..How you 'featured' the Signs/posters... That was cool & added to the ..Quarrantine type nature of the future sets. All up I really enjoyed this and cant find any faults in my opinion. Top Flick!

This is the first Sci-Fi S&E movie I'vwe seen, and it really is amazing.
As others have said, the base storyline was very much in the universe of Starship Troopers and the girl "could have been" Newt from Aliens 2 but that isnt a problem in my eyes.

The effects were sweet, the future subway set is brilliant, the poem concept was great. The length of time was right for this, as long as its an opener for a longer movie. There is so much you can do with this and I hope you make a much fuller 20-30 minute feature around this.

Stunning, the battle sequences were expertly done. I wish there was a sequal, im not quite sure about what you did with the ending, because it was such a good film. Well done!

Plot/Storyline: A lost relative plot on the backdrop of a galactic space battle. Nothing is ever new unfortunately this one has themes and similarities with/from Starship Troopers (the bugs, galactic struggle, collaborators) and Wing Commander (Kerrans /Terrans) or maybe I have just seen too many dang films heh. This was a much better weaving of your poetry into the film. As the poem was one of the main points of this movie it was also not the entire movie.

Editing: Space battle movie with interspersed dramatic scenes. Although both were done equally well. Good editing and scene shots. The voiceovers were very good. The music was good but unlike Aether Flaven this one was more in the background it seems.

Pacing: Kept me immersed the whole time.

Overall: A few months ago this and Aether Flaven would have easily been 5 stars from me, this being my 410th review I have become a bit more critical in the number scheme although this film scores as high as many of your other works the same number now correlates to a lower rating. This is an excellent film and I really liked how you effectively used the poem within this movie. The backdrop become more of the story than the dramatic one should have. There wasn't enough of the characters developed for us to guess what was coming in the end. The space sequences while excellent dominated the film so the drama became secondary to the action.

This is another great film from this studio and I highly recommend it. It is a great example of how to weave poetry into a film and a good starting template for creating a good story within an action movie.

Script: 4

Nice story, though I felt like being thrown into the action with less information according the story setting, than I needed to fully understand whats going on. Story development was good though and the questions open at the end give room for a next part maybe. Would be interesting to see how this goes on...

Production: 5

Good set usage, nice costumes and perfect usage of the new possibilities given by S&E. I liked the space battle scenes and stuff. Also cutting was very well done and I liked the custom title sequence. Really good work!

Music and Sound: 4

Good chosen VOs fitting the characters, but in some scenes it was a little hard to understand them. Music was really good, adding to the athmosphere. All in all a good job here, too.

Overall: 5

Real good SciFi movie here. I had liked a little more info on the setting though. Good work to leave some open question at the end. I would like to have them answered by a next part ;)

Result: 4,5 rounded up to 5 stars

Here's my review...

+ Nice custom Backdrops...
+/- VO some were outstounding while some I thought didn't fit the part. Also some scenes felt flat when emotion was needed.
+ Very good special effects...
+ Very nice editing and smooth camera shots...
+/- Storyline thought it was good but not really over the top....
+ Very good scene selection...
+ Really liked the music for this movie, thought it fit the scenes...

Overall Remarks:

This is a good Scifi movie that contains drama, action and suspense and a good storyline. No matter some of the scenes fell flat when drama is need this is a very good movie. 4.5 stars rounded 5. I'm looking forward to the next part of this film...

I thought this movie was constructed well and the
quality of the audio was first class, I did not
particularly see or hear anything original at all though,
which for me does count for something so to speak.

And, I'm not talkin about fireballs and cheap tricks either.

Thing is for me the sort of dialogue in this movie is all
a blur because after a few lines I stopped listening to
the voices even though they were all good. Probably
it's because these kind of flicks make me feel like it's
just a soapie in space, and the technical terminology has
gotten just a bit old perhaps.
On that level the script failed for me even though
it was a cleanly executed piece with no obvious flaws.

On a visual level I would have liked more close ups of
the main characters, mainly because the sets are starting
to irritate me somewhat, the less I see that I've seen
a thousand times the better.

Really, I think some of the underlying issues
with the whole TM moviemaking software have
impacted on you in this piece.

Still it was a classy if not classic film
all things considered.

Good luck with future projects.

What I like the most about your film and the least...

The suspense and mystery and a unique plot, definitely!

The story line was a bit like an anime I had seen before, "Blue Gender."

But over all you have earned yourself a five star review!

good ending cant wait for the second if you make one with i advise I THINK IF THE MOVIE WAS LONGER AND HAD a more involved storyline that this could have breeched the top 20 but it was a little short. the opening space battle was a mark of a pure sci-fi wich set the tone for the rest of the movie this isnt one of my best review but i dont think ive fully proccesed the movie yet

I fell victim as well - I expected a film from you to blow me away - This movie is damn fine - but when compared with your other work it loses its luster. BUT that doesn't mean it doesn't have merits. This film has a heart and soul. The twist at the end was very unexpected - a rarity in TMO plot twists. The subway set modification is ... perfect. The "join the military" posters seems lifted straight out of Starship Troopers ( not a bad thing - but a reason I could not 5 star this ). While vibrant and believable - it is all familiar.

I would love to see more stories from this universe as - while it does seem like the backdrop for any generic space opera - the artistic flair you have adds a lair of depth and emotion - one that overlays a few of the rather bland VOs in this film. But aside from that nit picking the rest of the film is solid work. No continuity errors - excellent scene pacing and the effects didn't get boring.

Give us more! :)

Review for "A Thousand Diamond Droplets"

I just want to say that your title is really beautiful! What a nice phrase to describe the space!

Concept/Plot: (7/10) The plot just didn't captivate me from the start to the end. Even though there are some great twists, it just didn't make up for the weak story. Like a lot of people, I don't like sci-fi movies...I think they are extremely boring and unrealistic...but you interpret some human qualities into this movie, so kudos to that.

Characters: (7/10) I think the characters in this movie are quite boring (I don't mean to be harsh >.

TMO Critics Guild Review
ENTERTAINMENT: 6/10 A pretty decent film, but had some faults as described below.
ORIGINALITY: 3/5 Seems I've seen a myriad of works with this basic story-line. While interesting, was not enough to make me want to see it again.
SCRIPT: 4/10 The dialogue was pretty well-written, but the pacing of the story needs some improvment. I really liked the subplot of the (?)traitor, but this could have been better developed. More work with story and character development would help.
EDITING: 9/10 This is where the film showed it's merit. Good camera use, good cuts. The problem with the pacing of the fuilm was not due to any editing/techical mistakes, but with the script as a whole.
CONTINUITY: 5/5 Nice use of costumes, actors and set-peices seemd to match well.
SOUND/SUBTITLES: 6/10 I was not impressed with the VOs, for the most part they sounded forced or just read off a page. The music was fine, but I didn't find it hightened the drama any.
UNIQUE EFFECTS BONUS: 1/5 I though the use of explosions and placement of various billboards, was well-done, so 1 point extra
TOTAL: 34/50

I'm very bias against sci-fi movies as its a genre that I have no love for. Still the quality of this movie can't be denied and I feel slightly harsh giving it a 3 star rating. Nevertheless I don't feel on a personal level that it deserved a 4. A reasonable plot, although I guessed the main twist straight away purely because of some of the dialogue. A great use of action scenes though, and for anybody not bias against sci-fi there is guaranteed to be something to like here.

I didn't think I would ever hear myself saying this, as I don't like long movies, but this could have been double the length and I still would have enjoyed it. No checking how long it's got to run as I find myself doing with some other movies.
Very cleverly done, I'm much impressed.

i thought it was brilliant, something you are much better at than I am is editing down the scenes, which is so hard to do. I must say the story lost me at the end. I mean why was she saying Father, what Father the narrator? Sorry more people didn't like the vo work. But i thought you did a wonderful jobs, good luck in the competition.

Great opening sequences, and excellent cast of voiceactors. Occasionally the voices were drowned out by the music. Intriguing ending.

I'd be interested in seeing more sci-fi movies from this studio. Very inventive. With a little more time to invest in the story, I think you could really create something very original & captivating.

Great starting battle sequence that draws the audiences into the movie. A battleship being bombarded, dogfights, explosions, the works. We then proceed to a story in progress. Two people connecting in the midst of a great war. But alas, this movie is too short to fully developed the alreadly there interesting backstory and give the characters time to be associated to. When the ending is revealed, it didn't quite have the resonating effect it needs. As its an entry for the 96hr competition, I understand the constraints, so it still a great work, but a Space Opera type of movie needs more than the 6 minute running time for it to be fascinating.

A film that leaves you hungry for more. My biggest complaint is that I felt is was all too short to cover the story that it promised but then failed to deliver. However, very entertaining that captures a desperate mood.

The opening credits is a fantastic blend of introduction and pure action, it capture the viewer from tehe first second.

Some of the voice overs were annoying, they were to raspy and seemed to drag a bit. The story didn't catch me, it was obviously trying to capture the life of soldiers. But the greenglades character just went out and said it, he said "the insects are the reason i don't have a wife or daughter" rather than things being shown by action, characters directly say things and that presents a difficulty.

I had to work hard to connect the film to the guerillas :D but in the end, most work was good, it was just standard SE stuff, if this was released a few weeks ago it would be 5 stars but people have challenged the limits with free camera usage, i didn't see that here

i'll commend on "sheelba" saying that alot of the diolouge was stale, but when you have such little time to create a film perfecting each part is impossible as i noticed with most of the film. I noticed the thread in the forums and jetted over to watch your movie and i must say i'm glad i did, don't take the review to hard but i think you could've done better work with free camera and in the future, with more time, i think you can challenge yourself to produce quality. I understand the parameters of the guerilla comp so i won't rate down to low, but in the end its a film and subject to star ratings, its quality overall, nuff said, nice work.

I entered the gerrilla competition as well, so I am rating entries like a judge as well. Though not an official judge, I know that previous ratings have helped me make better movies so I hope my comments are welcome. If not, log onto my movie and blast the bejesus out of it.

Story = The story seemed like a good beginning to a series. Set in the future and at war with the bugs. I suspect that the guy in red is the real collaborator, but I will have to wait until the next installment to find out. One point off because I did not see how it stayed with the theme, but all in all a good story 4/5

Music/sound = Music was good in the slow parts, but wrong in the action sequences. Almost needed a star wars/Indian jones theme. VO??s were dead on. 4/5

Creativity = Very creative in the concept, but not sure how it tied to the theme. Maybe I am missing that part. 3/5

Editing = Nearly perfect. A little rough in some spots, but nothing to mark down here. 5/5

Overall = I see that this is a good start to a series, but it just doesn't suit the theme.

Final rating from a non judge = 16 / 20

That movie blew me away. That was the best Sci Fi movie I think I have seen on TMO. This movie I thought had a great opening. The storyline I thought could of did a little bit better, but overall you did an excellent job!

Great Movie But How Did You Make Space Battles And Such

Posted on June 20, 2006
- Master007

Ok, I am sort of mixed on this movie. I entered the gerrilla competition too, so I am rating entries like a judge. I too did a sci - fi, only mine has comedy as well. This was probably one of the best sci-fi's I have watched on TMO. However, I don't think it suited the theme.
Story = I felt the story was a little hard too understand. It was almost as if there was no story. When you get down to it, I guess the plot is that there is this girl who wants a promotion. She is in the future when they are fighting space bugs. I really think you could have done a better job showing the plot. This almost seemed to me like a movie done just for the fun of trying out the new stuff. ( I know it wasn't though) I know you can do better, cause I have seen your other films. 2
Music/sound = It wasn't that bad. The music seemed sort of like it wasn't needed. I feel like you could have used more emotional music. Also, the VO's were good, but they were sometimes sort of emotionless. (I know VO's are hard!) 3.5
Creativity = I felt like I was watchong a remake of the old film Starship Troopers. I know that almost every concivable thing has been done in sci-fi, but it could have been more original. Also, I don't see what this has to do with the theme. 2
Editing = WOW! The space fights were awesome. It was solid editing throughout, and very well done. 5.5
Overall = I see that this is a good movie, but it just doesn't suit the theme. I am don't mean to be harsh, I am just being honest. I can tell it took you time, but I can see that you can do better.
Final rating from a non judge = 13 / 20

Reviewing for the 96-hour guerilla filmmaking competition with the theme ??My neighbo(u)r has a secret??

Story: (2/5) firstly this really wondered from the theme a little too much for my liking. I??ll admit the theme maybe a little to limiting but you just seemed to use it to get some action scenes in. The dialogue seemed contrived rather than organic they just seemed to spend all their time talking about there family. Nothing really seamed to contain emotion, the way the commander was caught out seemed too simple and a little lame. The story was also at times confusing.
Creativity: (2/5) I??m used too such much originality from this studio but this effort just seemed like an excuse to get in some new fight scenes. The story was dull and uninventive which was even more surprising since it didn??t even follow the brief. The ending seemed like you were low on ideas and the film parts never really gelled.
Sound/Music: (4/5) the voice-overs lacked conviction and emotion at times but you were under a short time limit. The music was well chosen but it was never inspiring especially when there was not a fight scene.
Editing: (5/5) the special effects were handled well and some of the shots of the spaceship were cinematic. The film flowed very well with an expert use of fades.
Overall Score: (13/20) ?? In a way I can understand the experiments with the new sets but it just seems to have taken your mind off the original stories that makes this studio great. Again I think over ambition was your downfall; I think you wanted to make a real film length Sc-fi epic into 6 minutes.

The film starts fast and furious with a massive space battle and serves to immediately draw the audience into the story, forcing them to pay attention to play "catch-up" with the story-in-progress. The ending actually matches the opening in this regard. The backstory is apparently already well-developed and adds rich texture to this short glimpse of a grand saga. On the down side, since this film is so short (compared to the information and characters presented) it was difficult for me to follow exactly what was going on. Who was attacking who and why? In the battles themselves I did not know who to side with since I had no idea which side flew which ships. The ending, though cute, was not too satisfying since I was too confused at parts of the film to be able to make a decision on how it should all end. I did keep in mind that this was an entry to the 96 hour competition and am aware of how difficult it is to make a masterpiece under such constraints. In this regard, you did a tremendous job, and I wish you the best in this contest.

Time for an admission of truth: I am, by and large, pretty sci-fi illiterate. Sure, I've read a small sampling of the greats (mostly because of a SF lit. class I took as an undergrad in college), and I do like the genre... I just get a little lost and bleary-eyed with the constant space battles, insane techno jargon, and intense interplanetary politics.

And so, the first half of A Thousand Diamond Droplets passed by in a blur; esoteric names fell from the heavens, lasers swam through the cosmos, techno-talk turned into white noise, great planetary bodies expounded upon their sociopolitical milieu, and my head grew a little heavy with confusion. However, what I felt this movie had that other sci-fi films lack is a certain sophistication -- a human element that anchors the glitz and glitter.

Though the narrative itself slipped through my shaking fingers, the emotional response I had for the characters and their tragic fate more than made up for it. And though my criticisms are more of a personal failing, I feel as if the story of these two wayward souls carries the possibility of connecting on a universal level -- beyond time and space and genre. So I'm willing to let my trepidation with the genre go. How you managed to weave such a subtle, nuanced, and ultimately very small and powerful story in this massive mini-epic is beyond me. I will only admire from afar.

I suspect this will quickly become your third victory in this comp. I can't wait to see what the judges think. :)

I have a soft spot for space battles and so I naturally gave this a high score :). They story, dialog and editing was very well thought out all the way threw, and the music was well chosen. However, while I know you are going for a different interpretation of the competitions theme, I wonder if this was too far off... well, thats for the judges to decide. Good luck!

So, well...another awesome movie created by kos. Just like Monday Nights 5, this movie has pure originality. Why is this movie original? Well, the setting, the characters, they don't seem really original. But somehow, kos made it to create an unique atmosphere. I like the storyline really much, this ending is just wow.
The presentation is top-notch, I guess you are the first moviemaker who can really work with S&E. Also music and VOs are great. Well, keep up the awesome work, kos, you are definitley one of my favourite moviemakers on this site now!

Dude that was just a great story that started out fun and built up in momento towards a very cool finale, great use of sets and props, an all round 5 star. Plus your music/Voice stuff is synch and volumed well.

I knew from the description in your production thread that this could be something special... and it is! Great storyline, very good open ending (I love open endings!), the editing and voiceacting just on the spot! This is the first movie with S&E spacebattles that I have seen, and I think it looks great! For me, the storyline was not predictable, you really got me with that ending... good luck for the competition!

What the hell. That was a great ending. Thought provoking and overall a great movie. The story was kinda predecticable but you made it interesting. Nice SCI FI movie. One of the actual good ones I've watched on TMO. The style of directing is nice. This was a good story Kos. I could ask for more but you did what the story was supposed give me. So good job. Very entertaining.

Editing : 4/4 - Some great editing in the movie, good job.
Dialogue : 2/3 - Mostly good, a couple of times the voice is a bit to soft to hear over the music, but most of it is well balanced.
Plot/Originality : 4/5 - This looks to the first part, and the plot is as yet unfinished, So I can't give it full marks on plot, but it does look to be fairly original.
Entertainment : 5/5 - An enjoyable outspace movie. I look forward to future installments.
Music/Sound : 3/3 - A nice selection of custom music.
Total : 18/20 - 5 stars - Good job.
