Film Description
This is my entry to the guerilla film-making competition vol. 4.

"my neighbour has a secret" was the theme and one of the first words we hear from the all-too average 'jean'

the music is from tmws. www.tmws.themoviesplanet.com !
credits: "intellectual" variation either 2 or 3. the song comes with 4. Thanks Matthew tyas!
starring:
sailorknightwing as Jean
elizabethsusan as Mare-Anne

this is not a romance, it is more of a drama, but since there isn't a drama genre, well, romance is the closest.

I tried to leave what was in the cabinet to your imagination. was it alcohol? was it drugs? was it a pornography magazine?
you decide...

extra note: i just noticed the lead doesn't have eyebrows! :o thanks for that skw, i probably screwed up in starmaker somehow

extra note: people just don't read descriptions do they forcemaster2000!

extra note: the desired effect for the talking scene was to make her seem very unnatural. that's why i decided to go stiff with 'i am not obligated to answer that" - did it make anybody think she could've been a robot? maybe there were wires in the drwer *ponders*

extra note: no, this film was not intending to make you cry, it's original aim was to make you think.

extra extra note: the end - she is married.. "happily"
I hope you enjoy it!

All right, I don't usually use the words "thought-provoking" when discussing these movies...but this one seriously is. Once it ends, it leaves you hanging, even though you're "kind of" sure what the mystery is.

As far as sound goes, this movie does a great job. The music is pretty fitting for the piece, and original, which is a pleasure to listen to. The VO work is pretty good, with only a few missteps along the way, and none of the "cringe-worthy". The pacing and editing is also done nicely, fitting in seamlessly so you wouldn't even think the director is just stringing along scenes which is, of course, the point.

But, mainly, the subject matter is great. It really leaves you wondering, and even if you come away thinking you guessed what the secret is (even if there really isn't a solid "answer"), the final scene will still leave you wondering. Overall a pretty good undertaking, and one I'm really glad I took the time to watch.

Don't you wonder what your neighbors are up to ?

Critical areas:
Plot/Storyline: An interesting plot, which is well written. The open-ended ending leaves us all wondering what the neighbor's secret was.

Editing: 96hr production taking into consideration. Scene choices and editing were done well to tell this tale. The dark unknown secret peaks the viewers' interests. Excellent voice overs. Music selection well done. A nice eerie theme to supplement the picture. My only criticism here is that you should add the full credit to the music in the description. I enjoy Matthew Tyas' songs and others may be interested in knowing which one of his tunes you used.

Entertainment: Entertaining movie, the ending however may leave the viewer frustrated.

A well done film for the time period. This is a good entry into the present Guerrilla competition. My take on this film - although the neighbor's secret is unknown, the one neighbor's is - she is a snoop. Loved the film Axe, looking for the next one.

Already a found movie so can't be a hidden gem from me, but will receive my honorable mention.

An intriguing tale of two desperate housewives unravels at a pleasing pace to a tick tock perfect musical score. You have amazed me before but this is something truly special. Great voice work by two of our most brilliant actresses on TMO is a highlight in this film. Great casting is one of the keys to a great film. Wonderfully quirky edits and choice of shots also are a joy to watch as the tale of a mundane world cracks open under the stress of daily life.
My Perfect Neighbor is a joy to behold earning it the MGM Platinum Seal of Approval.

Oscillating somewhere between tender social drama and cruel practical joke, this movie is really just a chilling slice-of-life flash fiction that gives us the essense of two troubled women who come to terms with, well, themselves. Excellent work sustaining suspense even after the film ends; most films that ended with such a conclusion would be seen as gimmicks, but it actually works here. Writing and direction were both consistently good throughout, and the two VO actresses were spot on in their performances. Some of the editing was jarring, and at times the dreaded sound sync issue would bounce back into the foray. But otherwise, a totally solid entry in the guerilla comp. Can't wait to see what the judges say. :) Good luck.

A wonderful film that leaves it up to the viewer to fill in the blanks. I like that. It adds so much depth to a project when your viewers become a part of the story and its solution I think. This movie is shot and edited well and your voice talent does a fine job with the narration. The lack of eye brows on the lead gives here a strange look that is eye catching. I thought a better outfit might have been selected for gardening though. All together a fine film indeed.

Hey, I think this was very very good. The Voice Overs were in place, the fact, that you leacved the womans problem, to the viewers imgaination, was the most liked in the film by me. Oh, and forcemaster2000: READ before rate!

Very good voice acting performance, great ! The music is fine, but its use is too basic (one music running the whole movie without interruption). I appreciated the Starmaker job too. A very good storyline, I like very much your way of telling stories. Bravo !

Interesting narrative driven movie that has a very original flair to it.
The music, although repetitive, has a way of binding the entire film together.

I found it slightly odd to see the neigbour gardening in a skirt and high heels, but hey...

nice little film,

Cool film, it has a great plot and certaintly kept me intrested through most of hte film. The voice overs were well done as was the flow of the movie, and the editing was also quite well done. However, the music began to annoy me, I think you should only have had the music through the first minute or so of the movie, not the whole song through the whole movie. Aside from that, good film 5 out of 5.

Wow, Axe. You really have a talent for producing simple, thought-provoking films centred on female characters (I'm not really referring to Knights of the Single Table here). The music is perfectly suited and gives the whole film a great sense of flow and rhythm. Great acting by SailorKnightWing and ElizabethSusan make all the difference, since it relies so heavily on narration. I think you made the right choice by letting viewers imagine for themselves what's in the cabinet - it's much more powerful that way.
This simple, melancholy life tale is presented beautifully in every way. Well done.

I always enjoy a good TMO drama, and this is certainly one of them. The air of mystery pervades throughout the film so wickedly that I actually caught myself holding my breath once. The dialogue was good (and though that "obligated to answer that" line did give me cause to pause, it's still acceptable). I have to applaud the use of music for this piece as well; it just conveyed the "perfect" mood and atmosphere. The downside to this film is that I have no idea what was in the cabinet and why it was important to the film (although the final scene with the sleeping man ignoring Mary hints that it is sexual in nature). I think with a stronger resolution at the end it would've made this film more memorable (that's only my personal preference). Overall, a well-executed drama worthy of the attention it has received.

Reviewing for the 96-hour guerilla filmmaking competition with the theme ??My neighbo(u)r has a secret??

Story: (4/5) Very abrupt, I felt it ended before it had really got going. If it is a social commentary I felt it needed more dept and increased character development. She comes around and then straight away asks what her secret was, I know this is part of the film but it gave it an unreal edge which didn??t fit the films subject matter. It used the suburban background well; the story did a good job of exposing the layers of the two women??s lives. The all-to-clean atmosphere was portrayed well.
Creativity: (3/5) creative in its pacing and style. It??s an interesting idea but I don??t think it works too well in this case. It was in the style elizabethsusans last winner but I thought this had more emotions and issues to explore which didn??t fit the constant high tempo perhaps a slower ending. It was also a fairly standard set up in the secret discovery.
Sound/Music: (3/5) the track kept the tempo high but it did get a little grating towards the end as it had quite a short loop. Few complaints about the VO??s they were mostly well delivered although especially towards the end they perhaps needed a bit more drama and emotion behind them.
Editing: (3/5) the whole thing also seemed quite rushed, having said that the scene choice was excellent in telling the story it really helped the movie to flow along. Some of the dialogue in the conversation scene seemed a little out of place. The opening credits were fitting.
Overall Score: (13/20) ?? a good snap shot of suburban life, neat and tidy film but perhaps a little under-ambitious.

MoMc Review

I am sorry? I simply don??t seem to get this movie.

The opening sequence was good. And the music choice fit the theme of the movie very well.

But I felt the conversations between the two women were very unlikely and unnatural. I could not stay with the main character in her obsession of her neighbor either. Somehow her behavior just felt awkward to me, rather than intriguing. I think it is mainly because the dialogue, editing, and camera work did not do good service to the theme.

3.4/5.0

The story of two neighbours. Can one help the other with her secrets, or will it simply drive her away?

The music overpowered the VO's a little, though the music was very nice. The narrator spoke a little too quickly, but both of the voice actors did a good job. I liked the way that the different characters had different personalities and styles of speaking.

Overall, I was left a little unsatisfied, perhaps due to the 'incomplete' nature of the plot (even though it was deliberate). Nevertheless, this was a very good movie throughout. All the best for the future.

Don't you wonder what your neighbors are up to ?

Critical areas:
Plot/Storyline: An interesting plot, which is well written. The open-ended ending leaves us all wondering what the neighbor's secret was.

This pleasantly suprised me, not just because I didn't find out the suprise, so I was left to imagine what it could be, but also because it was a very real portrayal of a neighbour with nothing better to do than poking her nose in someone else's affairs.
Liked the music, liked the vo's.

lol I couldn't help but think that the mysterious item was a battery-powered dildo lolol hahaha sorry but that was my first thought and it turned this into a comedy for me...

Seriously though,if that is still possible,I thought this was an excellent little slice of modern suburbia:-)

Posted on June 25, 2006
- markrichardbehenna

It seemed to start with a woman??s simple jealousy about a simple thing, and went onto something much more serious and complex.

Wasn??t very original as this sort of scenario would be one of the first ideas that came to anyone in the competition, but it is the way you presented it and added onto the base that mattered.

I quite liked the voiceovers, there was a difference in the tone of each which truly defined them as people and they felt more alive. The music was very suitable, although I wasn??t sure if it should have been used all the way through.

Great use of scenes for the predicaments, it was very smooth all the way through.

Liked it, although the ending felt like a cruel practical joke when I realised there was no way to be sure what the problem was and what was going to happen now it??s been discovered.

Posted on June 25, 2006
- Apocryphon

Nice opening titles, writing was a little indistinct but that may have been the desired effect. The music isn't my favourite but it did a good job here, carried a certain uneasiness right through to the end. Good editing for the largest part, very good VO's and good sinister mood overall.
The dialogue between the two women was a little odd, very normal everyday folks on one side and very precise and unnatural on the other, not a bad thing...it added to the hook.
I waited a while before writing this review, I was going 4 stars at first but I find it is lingering in my mind and I am still thinking about it. Sign of a good movie ;)

"My neighbor has a secret..."

An inspiration to filmmaking as always from the Guerilla filmmaking competition. And when I say, inspiration, I'm talking about movies like these.

Plot - 15% - A very interesting storyline. A bit overdone, though. I've seen many guerilla movies this week that have been about someone seeing their neighbor do strange things, and then the first sneaks into their house and finds something shocking. But the intensity of it, and the ambiguous plothole at the end certainly gave this movie a big thumbs up, leaving the viewer to determine the ending for themself.

Originality - 7% - Like I said, overdone a couple of times, but you managed to keep it mostly fresh.

Sound Engineering - 10% - As far as I could tell there wasn't much sound engineering... so I'll just consider this void.

Music - 6% - I'd have to say, the single music track that you used got boring quickly. Next time, try some variety of music, or a music track that doesn't get repetitive.

Dialogue - 10% - Most of the dialogue was pretty appropriate. I think you could have used a choice of words better than "I'm not obligated to tell you that". And some of the voice-overs sounded more like they were read, not acted.

Length-Quality Ratio - 20% - You didn't rush this at all. It moved at the appropriate pace, with the right twists at the right times.

Reviewer's Tilt - 10% - The movie, as a whole, was pretty good. I think it might have been good to show some ending credits. That's just a pet peeve of mine, so I'm not going to lower your score.

Overall - 78% - ****

This is certainly a good effort, with an interesting ambiguous ending. You should be proud of yourself. I myself have entered the guerrila filmmaking challenge vol. 4 as well, and I understand that it could be hard to fit something to that title.

All the best for the future, (but save some for me)

I entered the guerrilla competition as well, so I am rating entries like a judge. Though not an official judge, I know that previous ratings have helped me make better movies so I hope my comments are welcome. If not, log onto my movie and blast the bejesus out of it.

Story = The story started out pretty good, I was actually curious to see what the ??Secret?? was. What I didn??t understand was why the neighbor got upset when asked about having Help. Unless it was an allusion to the other ??Help?? mentioned in the end. I still don??t know why the house was spotless, or what the problem turned out to be (I know, that was the mystery in the writeup ?? but I am mentioning it from a movie standpoint ?? it would never fly in a film). 2/5

Music/sound = the music started out nice, and after about 2 minutes of the same note pattern, it got annoying. I think it would have been better if the song had changed to something more dramatic once she snuck into the house. VO was good and appropriate for the players. 4/5

Creativity = Concept was good, but it did not follow through to the end. Again, the first half was very sell set up, if just kind of died at the end though (by the way, my movie had the same problem) I would love to see the same movie again, but with more details as to the problem and what our main character did to intervene. 3/5

Editing = Editing was very good. I would have changed the Face Closeups to Head close-ups. But I did like the use of the new camera pan features. 5/5

Overall = Overall, an original story but didn??t go anywhere. It had the potential, but fell flat.

Final rating from a non judge = 14 / 20

Being of a macabre disposition, I prefer to imagine there was a severed head in the cabinet. ;)

Nicely composed, intriguing story that steals one's attention to the final frame. My only quib is that some of the dialogue feels more like it is read than acted.

So many things were rushing through my head and I was half expecting Mary-Anne to come up to Jean and kill her with an axe or something. My only question is why don't I have eyebrows?

Okay this was a pretty good movie. I too entered the guerilla film competition, and I am rating the entries like a judge would. Note: I am not a judge. The title seemed very straightforward, but the description didn't tell me much.
Story = Well, it started out as a very subtle story, about a neighbor who watches her neighbor. She is almost envious of her "perfect life." I did feel the ending was a little abrupt, and almost didn't need to be put in. The whole you think what was in the cabinet is good, but almost could have been executed a little better. 4/ 5
Music / Sound = Vo's were great. No complaints about that. Sometimes they were a little hard to hear, but they still were good. I felt that the music was too repetative, and that it could have had a little more emotion to it. 3.5 / 5
Editing = Very solid editing. I am not sure, but I got the feeling that you used free cam. If you did, it was done well. No complaints here. 5/5
Creativity = well, it is a pretty original story. It does seem like a lot of the entries are having people sneak into the neighbors house. Yours is different because the women is outside. That is almost a little too unralistic for me. It suited the theme perfectly. 3.5/5
Overall = I found this to be a good movie, in that it was made with care, and thought. I did feel it ended a little too abruptly, and that is my main concern. 16/20
Good job and good luck at the competition!

I hope this helped, Please rate my entry From Space and out of Place http://movies.lionhead.com/movie/89851

An excellent movie, and it just shows that you don't need flashy effects or stunts to tell an interesting story of normal life.
Outstanding.

The V.O work was outstanding on this...It shows us all that nothing is as it seems...Sometimes even when someone seems to be perfect they are'nt in anyway at all.
very well done movie..

To describe this movie:
Get caught between jealousy and secrets with the music blending in so well to complement the voice overs.
Overall it was such a pleasant watch as it flowed so nicely.

Axe I really liked this movie. Great Story and execution. Flawless editing. VO's were on the spot. One Question though. Is there a sequal so we can find out her problem? Please say yes, I don't wanna decide I wanna know lol!!

A tricky, sticky web of suspense envelops the viewer just long enough for them to realize the painful truth about . . . My Perfect Neighbour! Both actresses were superb in their rendering of the characters, the cinematography was mature and refined and who couldn't love those suburbia in flux titles!?

Great movie! really subtle story and great ending.

AxeCinema goes to show what a restrained use of S&E can really achieve, although some of the early gardening shots had the actress half off screen, so the camera move should probably have been delayed a little.

Story: 5/5 Original and subtle
Editing: 5/5 First class - great dramatic tension although I was a little confused by the going in and out of doors at the beginning - not enough to detract though
Production: 4/5 Only on detractor - the piano riff (while nice) was a bit relentless and was used for too much. Could have used something a bit different in places for a change of texture.
Dialogue: 5/5 Full of character and based in reality - excellent stuff.

I'll tell AxeCinema what I thought the secret was and he can post it or not!
