Film Description
*** NOT A TECH DEMO ***

Yes, it's a real movie. It's a subtitle-narrated piece about a young man serving in the War of 2029.

Thanks to 6-headedmonster for the blood prop.

Plot and Characterisation - 36/40 - Great characterisation, the only fault was that I would have liked to know a bit more about the speaker himself, we got a good idea of what his feelings were but some background information on him, maybe some flashbacks of what his home looked like or something, would have been nice to make him a more rounded character.
The plot was also very good, reminded me a bit of the flash-forwards in the Terminator films. You set a very dark atmosphere throughout the movie which kept the tension up nicely. Only fault I can think of with the plot is that some explanation of how the war started would have been nice, again background info!

Soundtrack, mods, subs and SFX - 18/20 - The music did it's job reasonably well, especially considering you were using in-game music. I felt that custom music could have done the job a lot better though as some of the in-game music just wasn't dark and atmospheric enough to do this movie justice.
The use of freecam was very well done, although for the first shot where we zoom through the city there are points where we go through the skyscrapers instead of over them or to the side of them. Apart from that all the freecam work was excellent as were the fire special effects that you used.
The subtitles were also excellent, nice and easy to read without being too slow.

Dialogue - 9/10 - This was haunting, very good and very atmospheric. It was always very much in character and we could tell what the main character was feeling. There were about 2 lines I noticed that didn't seem to flow too well but that's being very picky on my part. Excellent job on the dialogue!

Editing - 18/20 - Very nice. One thing I really noticed though was the sudden ending, a simple fade out, and maybe a slightly longer ending shot, would have been nice as this was very abrupt. Also there were a couple of points where you had left the scenes going on longer than they needed to. For example when they find their comrade who has died you focus on the face for a long time, much longer than is needed, before finally panning upwards to the face of the guy who has found him.
Overall very nice editing and I had a hard time finding some faults in it to talk about.

Orion's Bonus Marks - 10/10 - I loved this movie. Very atmospheric and quite haunting. Nice story and it's good to see an S&E movie that very much is NOT a tech demo. Great job!

Total Marks - 91/100
91% - 5 Stars! Great movie!

As this was submitted to me for educational purposes, I am going to specifically discuss some of the technical aspects that made this film work and those that didn't. Then I'll give you a more emotional response after I'm finished blathering about all that.

PROS
Again, it is obvious that you know your cinematagraphy. For instance, a battle scene halfway through really puts you in the middle of things, with over the shoulder shots, eyeline matches, low angle shots, and intimate camera work that give the laser duels an almost operaic quality. Close ups are effective, creating empathy with the characters -- kind of like the visual telepathy in Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc. The editing and the camerawork in the last third are both astounding. I liked the trick shots, and really think the way you construct these scenes by editing various freecam shots is pretty incredible.

CONS
The beginning is sort of spotty. Close-ups, in many places, are far too tight and kind of obscure the action. There were also establishing shots where characters heads bob up unexpectedly from the bottom of the frame. There are also shots that just aren't centered properly... creating a strange distortion that seems... out of place. Shots like this really distracted me. In this film, you could really see your confidence in S&E grow -- though the beginning creaks a little, the conclusion is spot on -- well, except for the abrupt conclusion. But I won't fault you for that. :)

CONCLUSION
I liked the gritty urban combat feel combined with the strange science fiction setting, and though the characters were underdeveloped and the situation itself could have been developed a little more, I enjoyed it tremendously and think it is a great example of how S&E will change our storytelling methods here. I can't wait to see you tackle a more ambitious project with the freecam in tow!

An excellent story!

A very good choice of camera angles and the panning wasn't overdone. I felt that freecam was used as a tool to tell the story. Rather than the story being an excuse to use freecam.

To be honest there were scenes where I wasn't sure if the original camera angles had been used or freecam.

Intresting movie choice, this seemed like an actual story more then a display for special effects. The story for the most part was very good, and I enjoyed it. Even a little thought provoking. The way he stood in the fire at the end was a nice touch, I could understand this crazy act with ease, becuase you explained it well. BTW, I thought the way you used the effects fit in well with the story, it really bought it out well. Should be at the top of the Top Stunts and Effects charts. Very well done. :D

Now this is what I call a REAL move.. Gee I'm glad you took your time to release something with a lot of meaning and sensitivity! Truly had great visuals and effects which you used effectively. The story was very substantial. It had very good progression say the least, and the manipulation of the narrative was superior. I also liked your use of shots, very creative in this element. The precision of shot angles and sequences really made a big difference here. But just superb structure throughout the entire film. It really was something special coming from S&E. And the coherency of the subtitles were good too (VO's would be better but who cares)..

Well, i would like to congratulate you for being the first studio of making a film without too many explosions and demonstrations, this was something else! But a talented director in yourself I can always expect eloquent work in such qaulity matter. Well done mate, you've made my glad :)

Not bad. Good story. But the whole things is narrated which makes it dull after about a minute. I see where you're going with this. If you did some dialogue with the characters to reveal the story and the feelings, it would be superb.

Nice use of freecam. Looked very professional. For me the story was just lacking a bit. Lots of speculation and setup but not much resolution. Still a great job. 4.25 rounded to 4.

I must admit, that was a pretty cool movie. I only give it a three because it was a bit hard to tell what was happening through the ranting. It also ended abrubtly. But this movie is one of the better movies I've seen made with stunts and effects.

A pretty good film. I felt that the narration style was interesting overall, but a little awkward in some places. The story felt rather brief and could have done with some fleshing out. Still, an interesting concept and decent filmwork overall, gets this one 4 borg zombies out of 5.

Mmmm this one was a hard one for me to deliberate one.
I am in 2 minds about it.

On the one had we have the shotty editing, and the "overall summary feel". What is the summary feel?
If you remeber when you were in school, or perhaps you are now, and a teacher would say assign you a book report. What would i have done back then? Without really reading the book, i would have flicked across several pages, read the blurb and then written a report that was a "general" non specific review of a book i never read. It would not mention any real specific, just a broad overview of what happened, with little actual detail.

This is what i feel this movie is like. So on the one hand we have kinda shotty editing and a summary sort of feel. BUT on the OTHER hand we have some fantasticaly done faces. I assume you created each one of the faces yourself in star maker? Its quite some nice details. I like how they look, along with choice of uniform, and choice of enemy.

I felt that the scenes although a little obscure were well picked, and each shot was well deserving of its time, Likewise the costumes and props were definatley very fitting, and everything just felt right. It had an odd sense of consistency that comes with an eye for detail.

So why am i in 2 minds? Becasue inspite of somewhat crap editing and lack of any real detail (ie narator dictating the entire plot) i really liked the design of the moive. Again the story wasnt oriignal but it jsut seemed right and fitting. Rarely do i feel that things fit and feel right, and here i did.

And so after much deliberation with my self and my self, ive decided to award 3 stars, having deducted stars fo editing and a "summary" like feel, but having awarded stars for design, pace and mood.

Well, to be honest the story was boring but the use of free cam was very good. Also you used a lot of new options like new rain, fire, helicopter, intensive use of free cam...hm...one of the better S&E Movies.

Very nice story complements the entirety of the movie. I noticed a few uses for the free cam but some looked like the default ones (not unless they are necessary of course but I shouldn't complain) Good job on that part nonetheless. Some of the older music can still effect the story in one way or another and you seemed to pull it off Tarison. The ending ended rather suddenly but thats cool, its hard to get the ending scene just right. Probably one of the very few S&E movies that are actually worth a watch.

MovieWood E! Editor...

Decent production here Tarison. The first S & E with a storyline that was planned to be a movie. I loved the initial fire scene and how it spread. The CPR is a new and useful touch. You showed a good sample of what to expect out of the EP. Free cam control was really good for the time it has been available. The only thing was the actually storyline didn't afford me to know more about the conflict, why there was one and how it started and the depth of the charaters wasn't really portrayed enough. I imagine that now you have a feel for the EP, we can expect some in-depth movies coming out of your studio. This is the first movie with the EP that actually made me want the EP since it was released and from what the "charts" were subjected to. I expect it to be here this week... I hope. Nice overall job.

Bravo!
