First Place in the Guerilla Challenge #3

The Day I woke up Dead are the first words we hear from the tormented Mari Monrou??? although those words are not her last

The reason for the ending of this movie is meant to add to the confusion of the murder of Marilyn Monroe.

Some people think she was murdered, others believe she had a breakdown and overdosed on pills and booze.

There are even rumors that she was alive when the paramedics arrived, died in the ambulance so they brought her back home where Miss Monroe???s doctor and housekeeper helped hide the facts of what really did happen

If the world has no idea how this woman died, how the heck should I know?

Take the ending just as the rest of the word has had to take the death of the first true bombshell actress, it happened and no one of us will ever really know how or why

I remember well the day Marilyn Monroe died. I was only ten years old and I cried when I heard the news on the radio. I had the same thought so many kids I knew had that day "If I had only known her she would be alive." Even though she was a bombshell and considered a sex goddess of the screen she connected with children in my generation in the most amazing way. She seemed to be one of us, confused and hurt by the world the grownups had created. That is something no one mentions about Marilyn, kids loved her and she loved us. For many of us who where small then, her death was the rude beginning of a realization of the horrors to come. The murders of President Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, the war in Vietnam. The day Marilyn died was the day we began to grow up.

Your brilliant film brought all of this back to me in a vivid way. Wonderful work here that is a highlight of TMO in my book. The film, The Other Woman, illustrates how Marilyn has gone on to affect later generations in ways she or her studio Twentieth Century Fox could never have imagined. This film is an example of the effect of the extraordinary complicated woman on the creative brilliance of women artists today. I am so impressed with the thought and effort that went into this production and in my book, this is worthy of the MGM Platinum Seal of Approval!

A very good movie which I can see why won the 96-hour guerilla filmmaking competition as it kept to the "dead theme" really well. I also enjoyed your choice of having the movie in a under-tone of red which I thought was very unique and helped the movie's atmosphere....maybe the red sybolised her tragic love or the colour of danger and her death.

The story was pretty good but I felt it wary in the middle but did pick up again towards the end however was abit confused with the flashbacks as I didn't understand the quick jumps between the different scenes (was it to show her final momements & thoughts?). The dialogue throughout the movie was spot on, along with the VO which was very clear.

Top marks on the custom design such as the opening credits and the office set of the president and a very unusual choice for the music which I felt was a weird choice for this kind of movie but yet, worked at times. Overall, a very good movie and it is showing that you are one of the most promising film-maker on TMO!

A really brilliant movie about a love story that simply coludn't be...it's very sad, anyway, i like it. Don't you think you used too much the difuminated black between the scenes? Well, you would may like it to be more dramatic and so you did that way like. And, you are very punctual, cos Mari Monrou', as you call her, the other day would have been 80 years. Poor Mari!
You've got a lot of talent!

This movie was under standing why she couldn't get her life strate! and how she was all was depersted. Mezzanine did not know what to do or what to say when she say her boyfriend wife and his wifes child. She thought she loved her boyfriend but all she loved was a mist of air! When she call her boyfriends wife she really did not see what was coming! But now she Knows!

Review for the Guerilla Challenge

Story: (3/5) It was?.the butler! Ok so that was cheesy, but seriously it??s a very intriguing story as it??s not a subject that is confronted very often, but waking up in the end implying that it might have all been a dream, surely everyone is really fed up of that ending, plus I didn??t think there was that much mystery behind the whole thing.

Creativity: (5/5) Some lovely ideas flowing there, I noticed you used an older camera version, and I think it ended up as a big plus, the characters and dialogue used were also great, and although I did like the monologue style commentary, I can??t help but wonder what would of happened if it was told in real time.

Sound/Music: (5/5) That music was so gripping, most studios would either use a very slow melody, or even worse a fast paced action theme. This music was fast enough to keep up the sense of urgency in atmosphere, but not so fast that it would turn into a guns/kung fu theme. Voiceovers were also brilliant, with a slight mocking tone when speaking of the wife.

Editing: (4/5) This was quite impressive most of the way through, it all seemed very professionally done, but at the end I found myself a little confused when the scenes sort of randomly skipped back to a flashback.

Overall Score (17/20) More stiff competition for the Guerrilla Challenge top spot, I think you should be very pleased with your performance here, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Reviewing for the 96-hour guerilla filmmaking competition with the theme ??one day, I woke up dead??

Story: (4/5) gripping, exhilarating never let go of the fantastic pace until the end where I thought the mystery could have been handled better. It made perhaps a bit too little sense in comparison to the crystal clear narration of the rest of the film and seemed rushed.
Creativity: (5/5) using the older film reel really helped this film come alive. Both in the stories take on the theme and in the cinematography this film had creativity in abundance.
Sound/Music: (5/5) the music kept the tempo fast and the action exciting. The VO fitted the role well.
Editing: (5/5) simply beautiful, the film flows in a reddish haze that envelops you into the action. Good use of fades.
Overall Score: (19/20) vastly different from many other entries in its style and content which is a real plus. Beautifully created with some stylish on-screen visuals, an elegant film.

The narrative flashback style actually worked well with this film and kept in the context of the competition. (Wonderful job in such a short timeframe, by the way.) I think what piqued my interest the most was the allusion to Marilyn Monroe and John Kennedy. From the ending I suspect you wished to maintain the mystery of her death, in keeping with the Monroe-Kennedy motif, but it did not seem very satisfying nor in keeping with the narrative style (the narrator told us everything since the start, but in the end keeps ambiguously quiet). But that's only my personal preference, and is a minor quibble in what is one of the strongest contenders for a winning entry.

Deliciously concieved and wickedly written, this is ruthless filmmaking at its peak -- delivering a tidal wave of emotion so rich and thick we forget we're watching pixels run around in their underwear. The voiceover narration in this one carried the film to an almost ethereal level, ascending past its noir conventions and bringing us front and center to the tormented life of one single woman looking for love in all the wrong places. Artistic and coy in many places, the film rarely plays it safe. The playful and manipulative moment of montage editing that marks this film's finale really toys with the viewers perception of what they've just seen, making us reevaluate what happened and what did not.

Elizabethsusan continues to be a filmmaker I find myself compulsively enjoying and following like a rabid fanboy. At this rate, you'll have about a million and one pouring out onto your doorstep. :)

I don't often like a fully narrated movie, but this one is a prime example of how it can be done RIGHT. The music, the editing, the style, the voiceover, all worked perfectly together to create an atmospheric movie that held my attention and kept me glued to the screen. There was an almost poetic flow. Dulcilicious!

A kept woman grows vindictive when she finds herself in a love triangle with the rich and famous! What-a-what! And made in just a few hours?! Well no one could argue that it isn't oriented to the contest, it's just that, you know, it makes my entry looks like a puddle of puke . . . Great narration and an atmosphere you could cut with spoon. Astounding, as usual.

made in 96 hours? seems an awful little to create such a powerful, thrilling experience. Very stylish noir feel with the filter and the voiceover was out-of-this-world. a swirl through depression, sex & even abuse [though i didn't understand why he would kick her vagina]. With a great ending! i can't not comment on the amazing titling. oh and one more thing - the music was great!

Great work. VO was excellent. Story and editing were top notch. I know it was sort of an open ending but it did confuse me a lil. Don't mean to get too technical with it, but if she was attacked bye two guys the police would know foul play was involved. I had to mention it because it stuck in my head when that scene came up. Overall this is one heck of a film. Keep up the great work!

This was quite an interesting idea. I always like watching movie that make me think "damn, I wish I'd thought of that", and this was certainly one of them. You continue to impress with me with your unique brand of films and your VO is great. The editing at the end made it a little confusing, but then maybe that was the idea. I'm not sure. But other wise a solid film. After this and Mezzanine's Interlude, I'm bookmarking your studio. Definately a personal fav. :)

This was very well done. The thing that impressed me was the amount of detail you devoted to the costumes and make up. Obviously a woman's touch. The story was OK, although not the type of story I generally go for. But it was well done and executed. It all flowed very well and it was easy for the viewer to follow thestory without concentrating too much (until the end that is).

The main bit I had a problem with was the ending. The scenes skipped about and had no real order. I am sure you know what you were doing, and probably many of the viewers did as well, but I just found it confusing. I know its something to to do with deciding what happens next, but that wasn't made clear and it spoilt the effect the film had on me. Also, I didn't think the bin fitted into the rest of the movie and didn't really make it funnier or better in my opinion. The VO was OK. A little more emotion would make it sparkle, especially in the scenes where there is direct conflict. In saying that, I didn't reduce the rating because of that, sinve my VOs are worse than yours.

I found this movie strangely exciting. I can see the historical events that have inspired this and I always thought Bobby was the nicer of the two anyway. What happened, does anyone but the person/persons responsible actually know, and thats whats great about this movie. It offers possibility in a very Descartean (if there is such a word, but I refer to Descartes) way. Perceive what you like and let us scrutinise the evidence to get an outcome.
Well put together and I liked the narrative style. I thought you matched the music extremely well and this helped to maintain a fluid movie which ended as soon as it had begun. This is also one of the more original movies on TMO and I always have a soft spot for any movie related to to Noir genre. Great movie.

Good v.o. - I like the bits where you address the audience with "sorry I`ve gone on too long" etc.

A good example of how to visually tell a story! Considering the time it took to make the movie, I would have to give it five stars. But I'll step back and try to rate it as any other movie, and ignore that.

While I fully enjoyed its unique visuals and the narrative, there were three scene choices that felt strange to me. The first two were the two scenes of the wife being followed (one in the trashcan, and the other with the shrugging). These are two scenes I would always avoid in any serious movie, as they just have that cartoonish feel to them. The third scene is the "beat her up" one, and I think that just went over the top with a woman. :o The story was interesting (especially with the reference to Marilyn Monroe), although I wasn't very thrilled at the ending.

Overall I think this is still a very fine piece of work, and I congratulate you on a unique and enjoyable movie!

It's a really flashy flick, probably one of the most stylish one's i've seen. I like the way you handle narrative, as if she's talking to the viewer, a good way to unfold the plot. And starting off with her dead was also I nice way to do it, although I don't really see how death, love and jealousy hook up? But in some way you managed to do it. It's a good movie and all, but I just don't feel that connection between events, really nice anyway though.

made in 96 hours? seems an awful little to create such a powerful, thrilling experience. Very stylish noir feel with the filter and the voiceover was out-of-this-world. a swirl through depression, sex & even abuse [though i didn't understand why he would kick her vagina]. With a great ending! i can't not comment on the amazing titling. oh and one more thing - the music was great!
