Film Description
This movie is strictly based on a true story. The names of characters and places are totally historical. The sequence of events described in this particular film are in fact, step-by-step, based directly on the real experiences of Captain Nathaniel Dawson at The Battle of Bull Run.

To those of you who don't own TMO and are watching this (namely sidadoo who mentioned this): yes, I realize that rifles in the 1860s were not semi-automatic, but in one particular scene I didn't cut the scene until about three seconds after I should have, yielding the appearance of a fellow firing twice. This particular editing flaw actually really bothers me, but, hey, it's not that bad.

All VOs are done by savage_rabbit as usual.

Oh, and if you like good ol' Westerns, check out my two other flicks if you like. Heck, even leave a review if you want. They're old but I still like 'em. :D

JAMESPETTS: Ah, yes, you've pointed out the flaw that has naggged at me and had so far passed in some degree beyond the public eye! Now, all the things you pointed out are technically true, although it must be your particular sound setup that picked them out so phenomenally. I'm sure you've no idea how much I struggled to get the audio the best that I could, my sound setup being very poor at the time (now, about 4 weeks later I have a new sound card and all, my next movie should be vastly improved in that aspect). The buzz was totally unavoidable and happened when ANYTHING was plugged into my old soundcard, headphones, anything. And also the input level on my microphone was quite inflexible, the only way I could get my own voice audible was to place the mic right next to my mouth (thus the breathing) and believe it or not I was speaking as loudly and distinctly as I could without yelling (although yelling was necessary a couple of times, one time seemed to end up TOO loud).

Anyway, I'm sorry that you were not more pleased with the film, but I consider your criticisms valid if the quality of the audio really was exaggerated as greatly on your end as you say.

SZAKOLCZAI--Hand grenades??? What? Did you actually watch the movie? The only thing I could imagine is that you're confusing cannonfire with hand grenade blasts... which is very strange....

UBERNEWBIE-- You are correct that gray and blue were worn by both sides. In fact, at a seperate engagement at the very battle that this movie took place in, a Union battery was captured near the Henry House by a unit of Confederates dressed entirely in blue (who were mistaken for Federals). Although as a general rule I had the Rebs in gray and butternut and the Union with blue jackets, I did throw in a Confederate with a blue uniform, and I varied up the Yankee uniforms as well. You are correct that it is a fairly common misconception concerning the distinction of the opposing sides' uniforms, which is the very reason that I made the sides fairly distinct in their appearances in my short little film to avoid confusion. Just because blue WAS worn by the Confederates and gray WAS worn the Union does not mean that I should have the Rebels in blue and the Yankees in gray, especially as the opposite still was IN FACT correct in general, although with a large number of exceptions. The "steady stream of wounded men in gray" stumbling to the rear is actually an excerpt from one of Nathaniel Dawson's letters to Elodie Todd, his fiancee. It was in fact LATER in the war when the uniforms of the Confederates showed up more blue from captured Yankee uniforms, although there were certainly irregular units near the beginning in blue (zouaves for example). However, the 4th Alabama was not one of these units, as per the words of the commander of the very company that this film is about. I hardly see the advantage in confusing my short little battle scene with an unnecessary adjustment to costumes that otherwise do their job (one, in fact, as likely contrary to historical accuracy as contiguous with... I have no solid evidence that indicates I should make the uniforms of the 7, count 'em, 7 living Union soldiers in my film gray, so I'm not sure why I should make them such simply for the sake of pandering to pretentions that may confuse the flow of the movie).

Things I would like to fix:

--the thumbnail came out quite wrong, which is a shame because I had a very nice selection for it.

--there are a few places that I have noticed where I ought to have cut the scene early, etc., for one reason or another... please do not count off too severely for the editing fallibilities of which you take note

--the exclaiming Rebel toward the end of the film (as often happens when exporting movies from The Movies) has an improperly synced mouth with his dialogue... oh well.

--the lip synching for one of Nathaniel's onscreen speaking parts is also off-kilter... but again, such is "The Movies."

In response to constructive criticisms:

--Yes, I realize that I could have dragged out the movie and put in filler dialogue in an attempt to help the viewer associate with the protagonist more, but my direction philosophy for "The Movies" is similar to that of Edgar Allan Poe's for short stories: create something streamlined that drives across mainly one major atmosphere/theme. I try to concentrate the material into as compact a form as can be done in order to more easily hold the viewer's attention with such a clunky medium, as the more drawn out and loquacious pieces on TMO do not appeal to me.

The best war movie I've seen on TMO. As a profesional historian I am always stressing accuracy when it comes to movies based on real wars. Most war movies on TMO suffer from poor historical accuracy and lack of continuity, especially in choice of weapons. No such problems here. With the limited resourses of TM you have pulled off the impossible, a feeling of a much larger battle than the one you can actually see. Combined with period music and a great VO it all adds up to the perfect package. Great job!

I would have to say that that is the BEST movie that I have ever seen on TMO. You movie was absolutly perfect I mean everything. The music the backgrounds especially the background outside the hotel window when the wife was reading the letter. A PERFECT 5 no if ands or buts.

It was as though I was watching a docu-drama on the History Channel. The feel of this film was so authentic--primarily due to the narrator's performance and the language used (based on an actual letter from that era no less). The editing and choice of scenes was also executed with perfection. My only concern is with the volume of the different sound elements. The narrator's lines were quite low and at times drowned out by the music at the end, but some of the character's VO's were quite loud. This forced me to constantly slide the volume up and down to compensate. Aside from that this was a magnificient endeavor and worthy Hot Pick.

Let me start by saying that this film has no negative aspects. Okay, now that that is done let me continue. This film is an inspiring and thought provoking masterpiece. You, savage rabbit, have done what few TMO filmakers spend months on doing. You have made a film. I have seen film over film on this damned website and most are bland. This brings me to my main point. Until today, I have not seen a war movie that is even the slightest bit good. Most war films are a mish mash of jumbled shooting scenes and no character development. They last about thirty seconds and leave me feeling furious at the fact that I had waisted thirty seconds of my life while I could have been watching something like this. This film is accurate, with subtle use of custom backdrops, and really gives the intensity of battle with the narration. That brings me to another point on the fact that the VO's were TMOscar material, and that competes with FoDoog, Dulci, Sleeves, Kaipan, 6 headed monster, Steven Kreg, some really talented names. You have saved me of a disgust I feel many times after watching something on TMO. This disgust is because of blandness, no-plotness (is that even a word? :D), and of course, plain boringness. Thank you! Bless you for your filmmaking. With the limited sets and scenes available for making a war movie, you have achieved a tremendous height on TMO. This should not go unnoticed. This is on the charts right? If it isn't, [naughty word!] the communtiy, what the hell are they thinking? This is amazing. The story is not the msot original but how can it be considering it's a historical film? You are great. Their is one last comment I shall make about my favorite aspect in this film. The music. It is the best choice I have ever heard and it gave me chills at the end.

Summary...

Plot/Storyline: 5/5 (Amazing, you must have done your research!)
Dialogue/Scripting: 5/5 (Great choice of words!)
Voice Acting/Overs: 5/5 (Some real TMOscar material!)
Wow Factor: 100/5 (Joking, I would though.) 5/5 (WOW!)

This is bookmarked. Amazing!

Quick Review: I loved the music. It feels patriotic. The backdrops were great and so were the narration and dialogue. I liked how this person recollected his experiences during the Civil War. It has a sense of drive and emotion in it.

Overall, it's a great flick and I highly recommend to anyone, wether or not you're a fan of Civil War films. Great work!

Your historical accuracy is simply amazing! You have done the impossible with The Movies, made an accurate Civil War movie, the use of the letter and the musketry and artillery in the background made it seem like something bigger. I'm giving you 5 stars for so many reason, but the main one is that I'm a Civil War Buff also, have been the Manassas Junction, AND, have seen some of the mediocre Civil War films on this site, yours is the first that I saw that the filmmaker actually knew what he/she was talking about. The music was chilling, especially at the end. Worth nothing less than five stars.

A MovieWood-E! Review~
Bull Run was one of the few war movies that actually worked. And the first Civil War movie that I have seen that works. This is largely based on the amount of sounds in this movie. The VO was great and fit this movie perfectly. It had some great differentiations for being from just one guy. The scenes of war were highlighted by the amazing use of SFX. 20 sounds of guns going off at once made this an awesome film. Also the editing while lacking in certain areas was nicely done. It was not the best but above average for our community of non-cutting people. I for one cast my vote for this being one of the best movies I've seen.

Great film! I love the concept and the editing and voice work is top shelf. The feeling of sorrow and duty comes across clearly, and thats not an easy thing to do. Watch it, you won't regret it!

I've been looking foward to watching this with so many reccomendations, as soon as it started the music threw me into such a great spirit, I swear I proberly could of sang and danced along with it. Very nice job with the uniforms and weapons, it seems like a very authentic and movie and even details like that add a lot into it. Great sound effects, it really made us feel like a battlefield, frankly it was an amazing job to do a full scale battle with such limited scenes but you pulled it off! I'm a big fan of history in war, there's been so many cheap rip-offs of world war 2 and it's such a refreshing change to see something from a different time, not to mention created so well, i'm suprised you haven't got many reviews yet this deserves to be at the top of the charts.

Overall outstanding!

It is hard for me to see how you have done it. It really should'nt work you know, all narration and in past tense too, and the leading man does not win the day nor die heroicly or tragicly. But somehow it does work and I am forced to go and look at it again to see where it flags and fails, as it really should.
Nope, you got me beat.
Great use of backdrops with the narrative and really good to see the 'Butternut' Uniform to the front, I am pretty sure that that colour uniform was more prevalent than the Grey, in real life. And the music certainly did it's part, very well used.
I dont know why this movie works against normal rules for audience empathy or outside standard Film Formula for plots and story, but it does.
I enjoyed it and found my mind filling in those thin ranks of soldiers with phantom 'Reb's' just out of camera shot.
Technically flawed possibly, but a great piece of work from you, really enjoyed it.

Absolutely fantastic, given the limitations of the software. A superb job was done on the voiceovers and the score, giving a real and substantial mass to the narrative. This movie should be at the top of the charts here, and a great disservice is done if the community does not vote it as such. A great achievement that displays the work that you put into it. Thank you for showing that there are other creative and original works on here besides the usual horror and absurdism pieces.

Thank you again for viewing Gunpowder.

My word that was bloody excellent, if this is one of your first movies, then my friend you are onto something. Yes there were a few editing flaws when there should have been cut always but that is nothing to how you captured the fell and intensity of war. I wasn't expecting much, but you blew this reviewer away, so much I will be creating a post about it - Excellent 5 stars.

I was surprised. I actually enjoyed it more than I enjoyed Dances With Wolves. Not that I enjoyed that movie particularly, but the story is told from a similar standpoint. Okay, so one of the reasons I enjoyed it more was that it was about a billion times shorter...

This movie is excellent. The music was great in setting the mood for the early Civil War. The battle scenes hid the fact that there was only about 5 people fighting in the scene. This is a quality piece of an action movie and it has to be the best i've seen.

What would have been a superb film totally ruined by the utter impossibility of hearing more than half of what the narrator was saying, owing to the direful audio quality, and the fact that his voice was more often than not drowned out by music and/or sound effects.

I cannot stress enough the importance of getting the audio levels exactly right: even an ostensibly minor failure can, as here, render an otherwise good film utterly impeneterable. Not only was the voice too quiet against the sound effects, but the quality itself was poor (the technical quality, not the man's acting, although that was hard to judge when I could not hear him much of the time), with a clearly audible hum in the background only when he was speaking, and the positively painful breath noises on the microphone. How much effort does it really take to ask your actors to speak some distance from the microphone, or boost the volume and/or filter noise in Audacity?

Having said all that, there were some very good aspects to the film: the concept of narration based on a real letter was original, and there was a generally very innovative and well-considered use of backdrops (with one exception: the moon backdrop had a road in the foreground that was totally out of scale and place with the scene).

This film could have been so much better if only proper attention was paid to the audio.

This was an amazing movie, espicially with all the crappy ones there are on this site.Definetly derserves first place. Great use of props and I am impressed on how the maker made a civil war movie work, since props, costumes etc are very limited. Also, great voice overs. The best movie on this site.

Great work!

5.0

Wow, great historical film. What more can I say? I guess my only real criticism would be that at the end when the singing comes up it is a bit loud for a ways and seemed to interfere with the monologue, but it wasn't so overwhelming that I couldn't understand it. Just a good film. Nice work.

Your movie is simply flawless. The historical accuracy, everything. Music that makes your skin crawl. Loved it! 5 Stars

Perfect. Like I was watching a tv show on starz westerns. That was a great civil war movie. I haven't seen this on TMO yet. And you pulled it off perfect. The backdrops the recount of the story though the letter to his wife. Freaking great.

Editing : 3/3 - Nice editing.
Dialogue : 2/3 - Good Vo most of the time. The sound effect and music made it hard to hear at points. (Music near the end, sound effects, during the battle)
Plot :4/4 - Can't say that something based on a real event has a bad plot.
Scene/Prop use : 3/3 - Very creative use of scenes. Good job.
Entertainment :4/5 - A good recreation of what happened at bull run. Excellent job.
Music :2/2 - Nice music.

Total : 18/20 - 5 stars - Excellent

Great job! This is a excellent movie about the civil war.
Story 5/5
Editing 5/5 - I haven't count the little glitches as I know the AMM is sometimes a little tricky and buggy. :)
VO's 5/5
Music 5/5 - The whole soundtrack fits perfectly in the movie.
SFX 4/5 - The many custom backdrops are well selected.
Overall a definetely 5 star movie!
I like it!

A great movie. Of course there is nothing such a surprising story or something like that, it's just a battle. A battle on a field in a war.
Now, this is hard. Battles are hard. Historic battles are even harder. Because you have to keep on historical facts. I am not that interestend in the american civil war, but it seemed to me that everything fitted. You are art as a director was good, I can nothing say about it. The way how the guy went around after he was smashed up the bomb was great! Really, a great idea. The only thing which I can complain was the VO. You should have searched for some Vo Actors, I think many people would have helped by such a project. Anyway, good job, keep up the work.

Impressive. Very impressive.

Even though I would've liked to see a bit more of creativity when it comes towards making a storyline that isn't one that can be taken from history, I can't do anything but give this five stars.

The originality in the way the film was carried out, being through a man reading his own letter, seemed to appeal to me greatly and the voice-overs just compounded my feelings for this film.

The best war film I have seen so far, and I have seen two.

In hereness- 10/10 - I loved every minute of it. Spectacular.
Over thereness- 10/10 - Everyone who's reviewed it seems to like it.
Out thereness- 9/10 - Completly original in itself just thewhole idea behind the movie has been done before.
Free to roam- 10/10 - Could be epic.

good movie. It a common misconception that the union wore blue and the confederates wore grey. At the battle both sides had blue uniforms and both sides had grey uniforms, other than that it was a good movie that is let down by the limitations of the game. Good work.

Amazingly well made film, that seems to be created with care. The voiceovers were excelent. Great editing, and a good use of props. I liked the sound effects used too. At first, I thought this would be one of those war movies; which to be honest - suck. But this was made with care and I could see you put full effort into it. The music gave it a good feel too.
Great work.

Great film! I love the concept and the editing and voice work is top shelf. The feeling of sorrow and duty comes across clearly, and thats not an easy thing to do. Watch it, you won't regret it!

Definetely one of the best war movies I have seen on TMO! I saw nothing wrong with this movie as the VO was spot on and the storyline was some-what simple (as the narrator is writing a letter to his wife about the war), it just seem to flow by without any bumps or unneccasary scenes. I think the editing was top marks also as I loved how you got the man to cry after the epic battle which was also well executed. The choice of music was also very good and overall, it was an excellent movie to watch! Definetely more people need to check it out!

4.6

There's so much to like here from clear and distictive voice overs, the sound effects, and the effective use of narration. I know that people shy away from movies here that tend to be longer than 5 minutes or so, but this is a story that could very easily be extended. I'm certainly ready to come back for more!

Thank you again for viewing Gunpowder.

very good, but lacking in some categories. It's about time someone makes a civil war movie. I bought the costumes from the propshop and was gonna make 1, but never got to it. I love these kinda movies, and don't see enough historical epics like these. I'm making one myself right now, but it's not the civil war. The music in this movie is very good, the VOs are very good, and the sound effects are good for the most part. They could have easily been better. The backdrops were pretty good, but I think you were too worried about keeping it short. It would have been better if the audience got to know the narrator better before the point that you started the movie. The movie didn't have much meaning to the audience. I didn't feel anything for the narrator that I didn't know. Follow me? The end was good, and I respect you for making this movie. It's not incredible, but it is definitely good, and 5* worthy. There could still be other original civil war movies made 'cause the north and south have different views on the outcome. That would be interesting. Please watch my movies. I have a comedy series called Australian Cops!

This is a great retelling of a letter written home. Love the way you were able to do it based on the real events of the American Civil War. You did a great job capturing the feeling and the sounds of the what it must have been like to fight in a battle.

The narration of the story, the voice and accent were very realistic (not sure if you really have a southern accent).

You deserve and will get from me a 5 star rating.
