Film Description
**PG-13**

This is an entry to the Chrysler competition. Even though voiceovers are in portuguese, I am a US citizen.

This is a homage to the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where I grew up.

I wanted to take a quick snapshot of the look and feel of Rio, and to capture the spirit of its typical and infamous denizen - the Carioca.

- Written, directed, and voiced by Sherwin Liu
- Valuable advice from script magician Kate Lee :)
- Original music by Sherwin Liu (in the bossa nova style)
- English subtitles
- All photos are from my own collection

The word "carioca" itself is a native indian (Tupi) word that means "the white house", or the place where white people live. Since colonial times, it's taken on a different meaning.

Being a carioca is to have a certain philiosophy of life. Cariocas are fun, easy-going, relaxed and a generally satisfied and happy bunch of people. They spend most of the day hanging out on the beaches - even on weekdays. They absorb the violence and poverty of the city and the harshness of their lives with their typical sense of humor. They live in a sensual world, and pride themselves of knowing how to really enjoy life.

This is also our entry to the Chrysler competition.

** SPOILER ALERT / READ AFTER WATCHING ***

Poverty-stricken kids with "jobs" such as the one depicted in this short movie probably do not exist, but there are many homeless kids who walk the streets in Rio and do all sorts of small menial jobs - washing cars that pass by, shining shoes, selling snacks and water. These kids often end up in the drug or the prostitution scene, which invariably leads them to short and tragic lives. This is an important topic, and not one that a four-minutes short could dare to address properly. If interested, I refer you to two excellent recent brazilian movies: "Bus 174" (Onibus 174) and "City of God" (Cidade de Deus):

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0340468/
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0317248/

I wanted to leave you with a good image of Rio, so that you may be inclined one day to visit this wonderful city. Despite all of its socio-economical problems, the cariocas are always friendly, upbeat and optimistic.

Perfect music. I loved this movie, but I was pretty sure I would going in. I don't think there's anything from this studio I haven't enjoyed. I felt like sipping a margarita while watching this one.

I am beginning to wonder if Sherwinliu has the words below-par in her vocabulary, usually the worst she gives us is Gold! Excellent movies, music, and wonderful backdrops, props, and all other things that are purely cosmetic.
THe movie in itself was great, portraying a wondeful sense/image of Rio. Great perception of Rio, great execution, it would be a crime not to nominate it for Best movie in our upcoming WCP Awards.

Will you ever be less than perfect? :)

Great job-WCP

I am an avid fan of this studio. I have an image in my mind of the kind of movie Chat Noir Studios makes.

This film shatters that image.

Nothing deep, dark, or introspective here; a very quick, snapshot look at one man--a representative character who the audience is able to immediately find likable--with a nice, brief story and a surprise ending. As I said, not at all what I've come to expect from Chat Noir.

But the quality of the film is EXACTLY what I've come to expect. Technical flaws are nonexistent, and although the voice-overs mean nothing to a poor English-only guy like myself, the subtitles are used very effectively throughout. Images of Rio de Janeiro are used to great effect as backdrops, setting the scene and creating an atmosphere that truly transports the viewer.

The story itself is very well done, in three distinct parts: first, an introduction to the main character (which is an introduction also to the lifestyle of the Cariocas in general); then, the introduction of a secondary character and a conflict to speed things along; then, finally, a nice surprise ending that should bring a smile to your face. Once again sherwinliu/Chat Noir have proven that, even in a four-minute short, good storytelling is paramount.

Yet another reason to proclaim once again that this is one of the very best studios on TMO.

Once again, Sherwin and Chat Noir continue to strike 1000 Yard Stare's eye blind with the dazzling brilliance of their offerings. And these two stories come from opposite ends of the spectrum...

In "The Afflicted", both wondrous and sweeping, the complexities of human emotion were the focus.

Here, in "The Carioca", minimalism and the simplicity of human joy takes center stage. The lead's ability to laugh and smile and find this joy in all of the facets of life, even against the backdrop of what can sometimes be a terrible city (like every other city in the world), is moving and sweet.

No technical quibbles, and a high five for the excellent use of photographic backdrops to transport us to Brazil. May be the only time many of us ever get to see it, but you've sure made a lot more of us want to visit...

Kudos to Le Chat, as always.

What next?

So after the complex, philosophically / psychologically dense "The Afflicted", the last thing I expected from you would be a small, soft-spoken slice of life story scratching at the surface of the inner-city poverty in Rio de Janeiro. And though some claim this is slow (which I find a problem usually with the viewer than with the film itself), I found the whole thing entrancing and -- like "The Afflicted" -- secure in the narrative voice of its auteur and ripe with a very visual style of storytelling. In some ways, this simple story might even surpass "The Afflicted." Maybe it has something to do with the warmth and vibrancy offered in its setting and the young Brazilian -- again, something completely antithetical to the sterility of the world depicted in "The Afflicted." But it's probably because I appreciate the small, intimate style of storytelling. I could go on for days about how much I love this movie. I hope it gets the recognition it deserves.

I came by to watch Dream Ride and found out you had just taken it offline. "Afflicted" has already been bookmarked by me. So that leaves "Carioca", and what a catch this is. I've visited beautiful Rio, and you captured the mood, the leisurely lull of the city, perfectly with your unhurried pacing of this film. And the glorious backdrops (especially with the shimmering sun) completes the experience. It's like a travelogue merged with a poetic tale of one of its typical denizens. And the ending fits perfectly with the established mood. A satisfying piece.

Excellent Movie!

While it doesn't have the strength of the other Chat Noir movies, it's still great.
It's a entertaining little story that slowly builds up to a final revelation.
I was about to give it three stars but the end really did surprise me, a great twist!

I loved the VO but didn't understand a word of it. :)
I guess that it was portuguese, given that it's about Brazil, however the VO lends that movie a certain slow charm and warmth that adds a unique listening pleasure to the viewing.

This one was a WOW film and there have not been many of them today. Succinct and poetic in its approach. Did you narrate it like a poem or is that just the beauty of.. Portugese(?). An interesting story combined with a seductive sound track and melodic voice to keep me hooked and reel me in. My wife keeps begging me for a chance to go to Rio, and your custom drops do make it enticing.
All in all another exceptional movie.

Very nicely done! I can see a lot of love and effort went into making this, with the VO, original music and custom backgrounds. It really created an image of the city. Only the scenes in the city were a bit out of tune with the rest, but I guess that's to blame on the game, not you.

This shows that you can really get a lot out of the game with custom backdrops if you just have the vision, foresight, and plain old know-how to do it. Excellent work. I can't be a very good judge of the vo's in portuguese, but it sounds almost sing-songy, for lack of a better word. Either way, a great movie!

Magnificent work here in The Carioca, beautifully filmed in such a way that it took me to Rio. The wonderful use of Brazilian music reminded me of one of my favorite films, Black Orpheus. Impeccable editing and use of custom back drops adds the feel of a shot on location film. Beyond these cinematic treats one finds what is really stunning about this film: the screenplay. The great story which is the foundation for this artist??s tour de force film is golden. The message of the film is so cleverly disguised that when it came I sighed out loud. The Carioca is a masterful film by an artist who has made me an ardent fan.

A beautifully told story. I could see that you enjoyed making this movie and I quite enjoyed watching it. The music was extremely fitting and the backdrops was the best I seen in any movie. The idea of using backdrops extensively amongst scenes was a brave decision and it paid off really well. The subtitles was at a good pace and the VO (I know I didn't understand) was also clear. Your projects vary to great epics like The Afflicted to quality shorts like this one! This studio keep churning out movie-making greatness! Great job!

Great movie Sherwin! I like that this film has a "true" cultural feel to it of the people of Rio from the dialog, choices of scenery and music. This truly set a special ambient nature that helps imerse the viewer into the story and setting. A great introduction to "The Carioca" set the story well..... but not as I expected it to be. Great "use of" and "play on" perception here. People will have to see this film to know what I'm talking about..... cuz I ain't given it away! Great stuff!

Nice use of the backdrops (really liked the sunspots) and did a lot with the short time you had.
Good twist but you had to wriggle a bit to get the scenes to fit your story in that short space. There was a white line between the travelling backdrops in the driving scene, minor but annoying.
Was a good little movie and I think you could make a really good social comment movie in the same area if you decide to expand the theme and runtime.
Good lil movie.

A film coherently scripted to perfection! A new breed of story and very well represented.
This film had some real depth about the pessimistic vision of Brazil. Loved the scenery of Rio, and the editing was just class. The story expressed the term Carioca very clear and your ideas developed into this was very intellectual. Again, great use of shots, and custom backgrounds and props. The music really gave an impact on setting the tone, and the overall production was just amazing. The story just said it all on what needed to be conveyed. Just beautiful?

Everything works with this, the language, the music, the backdrops. All very nicely edited, and whats more amazing is how the music seemed to match with the story, and ended when the movie ended. A very unique movie, that leaves a fuzzy feeling inside.

Originality - 9 I haven't seen anything like this on TMO..

Plot/Story - 9 It seemed like a very straight forward movie up until the end.. Completely threw me for a loop with that. Suprised me twice actually, and just when I thought it was going to be very cut and dry.

Dialogue - 8 Very well done, I actually did get the sence that this was a very relaxed layed back guy. He felt pretty real.

Editing - 10 Excellent use of music. Perfectly timed. Also some excellent use of backdrops to help tell the story. Nice use of a simple special effect, didn't rely on it but it added just a little something to the movie.

"wow factor" - 7 An excellent movie that accomplished exactly what you set out to do.. Wow factor seems to be the hardest thing to get over a seven with though... I really need to feel that certain something to go above seven. I do congradulate you on doing an EXCELLENT job of accomplishing what you set out to accomplish.

Overall- 4.3

I like this film alot, it's totally different from what we usually can see in TMO. I love the feel of this film that you have created. Little warmmy story but very entertaining and really feel great after watching it!
Two Thumbs up!
