Film Description
"It's not random violence. It's fate"

My newest feature. I have my friend Sean to thank for the idea on this one. I was working on something completely different involving multi colored robots, and he took one look at it and said "Hey. It's Rock'em Sock'em Robots".
Ding! Inspiration!
I ended up making this into an experiment into something I had been putting off for a while. Action sequences. While most of my other films utilize VO to hold it together, I felt I would just let the action and sound effects in this one do the talking. There is also a lightning effect I played around with and some stabs into humor by breaking the 4th wall (which I'm pretty decent at already). I hope you enjoy. Rate fairly. It may be an expirement, but I released it as a finished film. So give me what you feel it deserves.

A special thanks to Kornolis for the use of his song "Technotic Metal" which I found at www.newgrounds.com/audio

Official The Movies Review Center Review:

Story -1- Take a childhood game and turn it into a movie? Classic! This has got to be one of the most creative and imaginative movies that has shown up on The Movies Review Center. Usually fight scenes aren't too interesting, just people punching each other over and over and over, but you captured my attention with this one.

Sound -1- I loved the sound in this movie. The fight music was great and so were the sound effects. Also, you have a real talent in voice acting.

Characters -1- Characters is one way to put it. I'd call them plastic robots turned movie actors. They were great. Blue robot owns them all!

Sets -1- I liked the sets because they were futuristic and really pleasing to the eye.

Genre Fit -1- This movie was hilarious! I laughed the hardest when they were back in the green room with the director hassling the red robot about kicking the blue robot in the groin.

Overall -5- This was an excellent movie that brought back childhood memories of me simply creaming the neighbor in a round of Rockem Sockem Robots. Excellent job!

Okay...you've done it...you've made a very entertaining short film about one of my favorite childhood games!

Seriously, this is a really fun little movie.

After playing The Movies for a month or so, I've seen the fight scenes inside out, but this plays out so differently that it actually made it seem fresh.

The cutaways were excellent, too, and a great trick for breaking the rhythm of a six-minute fight movie which might have grown dull otherwise.

Great choice of music, too--just techy and edgy enough without any eardrum-busting high-pitched stuff.

What little voice work was here was also very well done.

What can I say? A great little piece of entertainment. The moral of the story? There is none! That's what makes it so much FUN!

I thought this movie was rather interesting because it was based off an old board game by Mattel: http://www.playthingspast.com/mtrocsocrobo.html . I never played it personally but I thought it looked fun seeing little kids play it. I liked how you took the board game further and turned it into a movie. That's a good use of inspiration there.

Also, the use of your parenthetical, "It's not random violence. It's fate," makes me wonder: Are we destined to get our butts kicked by insane multi-coloured robots in the future? Hmm ...

With that aside, I thought I had quite a few problems with this movie. I personally thought that the intro was a little too long. The credits cutting into those scenes, however, was a nice touch so if you can condense the intro a bit while having those cuts, that would be great.

Regarding, the intermission and forth-wall breakage ... I think that's the only thing funny in this movie. Now if you had the robots say witty things while they fight, I thing that might make this movie funnier. Otherwise, it feels like a movie humor-cuts to break the Action.

I also like the lighting effects though in the wall climbing scene. I thought that was a neat thing ... however, since it was raining for the second half of the movie, I thought you could use more of those effects.

Lastly, I think you should replace some of the punching sounds with clang sounds. After all, you have metal-to-metal action here and when metal hits metal, it would normally make a clang noise.

Other than that, I thought the fight scenes were well choreographed. Nice work on that.

Four stars.

Grats on the sounds effects yes. You gave me inspiration on things to search ( i have to find theses sounds).
You gladdy managed to speed the movie rythm by suddens and unexpected interuptions and effects. The scenes editing is strong and nearly flawless.
The only flaws was the repetitive side of the fight but you kept the attention by your surprises and spice.

riiiiigggggggghhhhhhhhtttttttttt.....

Originality - 7 - well aside from the obvious connection totally unique ..
Plot/Story - 3 - absolutely no story what so ever ... but it was consistant ...
Dialogue - 4 - The few lines that were in were really good, but i can't give you a dialogue mark when there was only a few lines of dialogue ...
Editing - 9 - sound effects were spot on, and it was generally a perfectly edited film, i just had one or two minor faults with it, like it being too long, but overall very good.
"wow factor" - 6 - I liked it, it was worth watching, maybe dragged on too long.

Overall - 29 - 3* - A good movie, it made me laugh, but it just didn't have the storyline to back up the scenes! :)

Haha! That's great!
Brilliant use of custom music, sets and backgrounds! The editing was great too! It's so flawless!
The Intermission made me laugh! I also liked the part with the director!
Well done! I hope the sequel's coming soon (if any)!!

I liked the rendered sets. Took a while to get into it but when it did it was non stop action from there. Good fight shots and loved the intermission part. I thought it needed a break haha (and ther director input was also clever).
I wasn??t sure if it was more action or comedy but you still pulled it off nicely. Editing and VO was quality as well. I thought the plot could improve a little but that doesn??t matter too much. A lot of effort has been put into this movie and therefore 5 stars well earned!

I love the inside jokes.."Do you know what method acting is?"...the green screen!! LOL Very funny. I feel as if some of my pent up aggression has dissipated! :)

This movie has a lot to offer to different movie-goers. While it is a widely based action movie, it tinkers with the idea of comedy [kudos on the intermission] that fits well with the given story. You can't have Rock'em Sock'em Robots just be action stars, there needs to be comedy, and I think you blended the line very well!

One thing I really enjoyed about this was the ingenuity based on the idea. To take a 1967 product and turn it into a clever fitting movie...Bravo. Two things I can say to improve on is try to blend your scenes together a little more, while they were all fine and dandy, some transitions were a little shakey. Also, you can't have rock'em sock'em robots without someone losing a head! :)

Creativity - 10/10
VOs - 8/10 [very well done, could have used more]
Action - 10/10 [you had plenty of it!]
Replay Value - 8/10 [I think people would watch this more than once]

I challenge you to make a sequel to this but based on the game Hungry, Hungry Hippos! Thanks for the movie.

Not bad... Well worth 3 stars! The set modifications were great! My only complaint would be the overuse of the same fighting scenes over and over. Basically two things beating the crap outa each other. Overall not a bad film. Good job, and keep it up!

A shame Captain Frank was such a runaway success, as until you create something as brilliant, everything else will be held up to your oginal masterpiece and be found wanting. Good comedy twist towards the end, its just a shame there are only so many fight scenes you could use before they began to get a bit old. GREAT ENDING! :)

The intermission may have seemed a good idea at the time bit it wasn't. :(

It's only a matter of time before someone here does a TMO 10 Best Fight Scenes, and when it does happen I expect to see on that list. :)

MOMC Review 4.0 (4)
"Do you know what method acting is? Well I sure don't but use it anyway."
I almost wish you had gotten to the random interludes just a bit sooner as they were really the comic high point of the movie for me. Perhaps this is because I didn't play the game so I'm missing the inside jokes. Maybe you needed some more dialogue as another reviewer suggests? *shrug* The movie overall is pretty entertaining though, with lots of style, some slick fight scene
editing, and very little actual story (as all movies based on old board games should be). Did I mention the style? Because seriously...

It's hard making an effective all-action movie these days, especially after Oh it's On 2 came out. However, this movie never let me lose my interest, and it kept pumping violent robot action with cool music and nice editing. The action sequences where especially well edited, and the green-screen thing made me chuckle. I'll give this a strong 4.

Well, usually I don't take to simple fighting movies to well, no matter how good the editing is. But I suppose the little ideas in between and the fact that this movies does have some style, does make for a four.
And it defenitely was entertaining, despite the fighting robots.

Loved the neon lighting. Exciting editing, and great action sequences. It would have been nice to have a story to go along with the action, but I was still wowed by it.

a hilarious idea, carried out just right. i was going to give you 4 stars because it was dragging along a little, but when the director got beat up that pushed it up to the next level. great job. but be careful with the whole breaking the 4th wall thing, after 2 times it is officially worn out. it was still good in this movie, but you might wanna steer clear of it for a while.
oh, by the way, i have a new trailer out that i think you'd like. if you wanna check it out on my studio page that would be awesome!

Story: There wasn't much of one, but there wasn't one for the original game either. There were a few pieces of comedy thrown in there too. 4*
Editing: The use of fog and rain was nice as well as the lightening effect. 5*
Music: Nice choices for music, they went well with the movie. 5*
Costumes: Pretty straight forward, nothing too special there. 3*
Sets: Nice choice with the moded sets, they let you keep it in a Sci-Fi feeling and still use locations other than the cooridoor or bridge sets. 5*
Total:4.4*

Plot:3 (I know their rock 'em sock 'em robots... but, why are they fighting?)

It lacked that undercut-head dislocation that we've come to expect from 'Rock 'em Sock 'em'. And unfortunately that is the pinacle of the game, especially when you're situated on top of it! Excellence everywhere else, however.

Posted on January 30, 2006
- NUNBERRY

A decent enough if overly extended fight scene, a couple of clever moments and effects as well as a kickass soundtrack make me feel better disposed towards it that it really deserves. The director once again falls back on his old crutch of having the actors interact directly with the director but without the desired comic impact of say, Captain Frank To The Rescue. I don't want to spoil the middle of the movie by giving the joke away, but it's been done before. Still, it raises a chuckle so I'm not complaining. There are a few moments where the continuity seems to be taking a back seat but nothing too catastrophic. Overall, the quality of the editing and the pacing overcome most of the problems introduced by the lack of a plot. Three stars - there are worse ways you could spend 6 minutes of your life.

Despite the claim on the poster, this *is* random violence...and all the better for it! Well constructed movie and very well edited action and sound. With no storyline at all, a six minute brawl between two robots could have become a bit repetitive but you've broken it up nicely with a couple of interludes. The cut into the 'green screen' episode was particularly well done and, for a bizarre, reality-flipping split-second, had me thinking you'd cut to live action.
