Film Description
This is a drama about domestic abuse.

This film is based on reality. Therefore I have intentionaly not dramatised it.

The point of this film is to show how abuse and control works. There is no physical violence in this film. But as any victim of abuse will tell you, it is the emotional abuse that leaves the deepest scars.

For this film I show the woman as the victim, but it does happen to men too.

I was a victim of domestic abuse myself for 17 years. I was married to a woman who was undiagnosed (at the time), paranoid bi-polar.

The question you will be asking is why didn't you leave? The reason is because you think things will get better, you think they will change (they don't change). With the control they undermine your self esteem. So you end up thinking it's your own fault, and that you deserve it. If only you were nicer to them they will change.

You spend your time in denial, you cover up the truth. Because if you admit it's happening, you've got to do something about it.

My advice to anybody in this situation is to leave. It doesn't matter how hard things get, it will be better than what you have now.

The music is my own.

I can really relate to this film as well. My x was abused (before she met me) and it seemed to control our relationship a lot

Nice job

Very well done. This movie hits home with me both directly and indirectly. I put up with this kind of treatment in a professional enviornment until I got fed up with it and quit. My wife and stepchildren were also victims of this kind of abuse from her ex-husband. It has taken a lot of hard work and support to get their self esteem back to where it should be.

I think the music fits perfectly in an ironic sort of way. It is a nice happy melody that lulled me into feeling like everything was normal when it obviously wasn't. It is the same sort of feeling one has in this type of environment.

Um...I really don't know what to say...It makes me pretty mad on the count stuff like that happens all the time. (i dont do that to my girlfriend...but im only in 8th. grade) It makes me wanna make a movie where the girl gets fed up and beats the crap outta the guy or something.
You made a good movie here, though, it makes you think.

I'm sick... I know it.... but I found this humorous for some reason. I guess is was all the "bloodys" Not a top notch flick, and not your best music. I've seen what a Rush, so I know what you're capable of. So... A four star, but a high four star. 82/100

Well, this movie is difficult to rate. There is not a lot happening, but you did a good job on finding the right pictures for the conversation. You pushed the actors abilities to show emotion to the limits, but I daresay you managed to not stretch it too far. I found the music rather distracting, but that may be a matter of taste.
Of course I am in no position to tell you how to make your movie, but i think mentioning a somehing about the background of the relationship or how both view said relationship (why she is still staying) or something about their outward social apearance (towards friends etc.) might have helped the viewer understand the problems involved and the nature of the abuse somewhat better.
But, anyway, just a suggestion. Either eay this is a memorable film you put together!

This movie goes straight for the throat, doesn't it?

Fortunately I don't have any experience of the sort of situation portrayed in the movie but it definitely doesn't look like a nice place to be, so I guess you got the feel right. If it's based on personal experience then I suspect it must have been quite hard to make.

I felt it could have done with a bit more of a lead in before Paul arrived home, just to try and establish the characters a bit more and some of the subtitles were a bit quick (personally I find getting the timing of subtitles right to be the hardest part of making films) but apart from that I thought it was very good.

A courageous film to make, and the lack of resolution makes it uncomfortable and disturbing.

I'm not convinced that the music works, but I admit that I don't like jazz at the best of times. Musical preferences/prejudices aside, the subject matter and execution make this an outstanding movie, so five stars.

Made me sad. I had that kind of abuse the first 17 years of my life. When I finally decided that I am no idiot my life changed. But there are always scars.
With honest movies like this one you show (and the courage btw) that this medium can transport more than just jokes or good stories. That it can make you think.

Four stars for a good film that gets it's message across clearly in a respectable way. I applaud that the abuse was subtle and not overdone. A truly disturbing portrayal of domestic abuse, eye opening and well executed.

I like the movie because it is realistic but there is no resolve for the character which leaves me empty. I would suggest to add a part 2 OR complete another film that has a begining, middle and end. The problem with this film is that it lacks a solution for the abused heroine - which would be my reason for watching a film about abuse. Will she find the strength to leave him? Will she stay in the marriage but finally stand up to him, therefore changing the rules of the marriage? Will she succumb & be destroyed (suicide, go crazy, etc.)to his abuse and the story ends as a tragedy. There are a lot of abused people out here, give 'em a bone to chew on! Push yourself more, you're off to a great start!

A good movie. You made me wanna jump thru my computer and cold-[bad-word!] the guy myself. A bit let down at no real resolution, unless another will follow, but a good job on the subject. The music for this sounds so '70s it actually comes across as a community awareness ad you might see on cinema. I commend the attempt to do something so serious, it's just the execution that lets the idea down a bit.

Definitely a movie worth watching. This movie shows the realities that people many times dont see or dont wish to see. Definitely a movie that does well on its own without special effects or VO's but something that would be worthwhile to persue with VO's and more material.

Definitely a movie people should see at least once.

Afilm which needs history and future added to it.The music didn't seem to fit the dramatic situation, and the editing could be smoother.I agree that you had a very good idea and rushed it to film.Release a director's cut.Ithink it's sad that people rate on length of a movie. It has created a situation where really good moviesbecome mediocre due to excessive editing, because audiences have the attention span for a music video.

I'd really like to 5 star this movie, because personalexperiances brought to film are special. I respect you as a reviewer too much to simply slather on a "Wow! FANTASTIC!!" and throw away a 5. The editing of this movie is nothing special. No VO's, no SPFX, and nothing done to costumes aother than normal choices from the game.

As far as writing goes, the story itself could use work. Not on the subject mater, but on the format. It seems rushed, and all of the elements that make it worth watching, could use more emphasis. You have more experiance with the situation than I do, so it pains me a little to even BEGIN to criticize the story. But the story TELLING didn't make use of foreboding, inner angst, and the reward/promises of "NEVER AGAIN" in an abusive relationship.

You've told more of the story while promoting the movie than in the actual movie itself. It's hard, to make a decent movie, and keep it under 5 minutes. But you captured the dialogue perfectly. You made the characters live. I could see the real life emotions behind the animation. But you have to make it live a little more.

I also suggest you switch the character's gender back to what they really are. Go on. Tell YOUR story. You made a decent film telling HALF the story. Go make a GREAT film telling ALL of it!

Good luck.

A film with a point. A good, valid point. I'm a huge fan of monkeys falling down stairs and such as that, but this type of movie is worthy of its own place here. I would like to see this explored more deeply, in a slightly longer film with voice acting and the works. Congratulations to you for bringing a difficult subject to light.

If you have left him, you shoulda' put that in the movie so that we would not feel so bad at the end. Either way your movie made your point, and did so just as you meant for it to. I was going to give you 3 stars, but then I thought it over.
You see my Dad was abusive before he became a Christian. So I know what abuse is like. He became a great father after he became a Christian so I had the opportunity to see the world from both angles. As far as your film goes it is a good film, but I felt like it needed more to be above a 3.

Just too much open sadness, one can not help but feel sad and empty at the end. Yet when I thought about it I realized it does deserve 4 stars, for when one is abused, sad and empty is exactly how one feels.

Ok I talked myself into it. 4 stars for a good film showing verbal, domestic abuse.

Nicely done film with a powerful message to it. Executed rather well! Music didn't seem to fit with the mood, though, I thought...and perhaps it may have been effective delving a bit into the history of the abuse as well to give the viewers a little more understanding. Still, great effort overall. Well done.

It was well made, and sad, plus the message was pretty clear. I sort of agree with Cult_Inc's comment that it doesn't appear to be something prolonged -- one way to do this would have been to show different locations/times/outfits, to give a sense of it occurring over more than just one day -- though the woman's thoughts do help in a way.

Thought it was a well done movie. The dialogue was well written for the subject matter. The only things I have to say are the music choice was kind of wierd for this topic and it could have been a bit longer. It was, I guess I could say, happy music? I figure you would choose something a little less uplifting, but it was your choice, so overall good job :)

Very well-made, true to life dialogue. The custom music was good, but I thought it didn't quite fit the situation (although maybe it shows an ironic contrast between what seems and what is...) In any case, the movie felt very genuine and emotional.

A true to life film. It is hard to imagine being upset for a character in a movie made from a game but you actually do feel it here. A longer movie really would convey it a lot better as well.

I liked the dialogue, but I felt the music took away from the emotional blast it could have been. I felt myself being happy listening to the music. I think it could have been better without it or a not so happy tune. Still a good movie.

This is a very hard subject to do and i think you chose the right decision to leave out VO's, you can sence the mans fustration just by watching. This film was very well done overall. I thought this was a good movie. I have a lot of respect for people tackling real-life issues, especially when they are drawn from personal experience. However, I felt this could have been a stronger piece.

It didn't really feel as if this was necessarily a prolonged situation - perhaps the guy just had a rough day. (Clearly, from the 'about' section, this isn't the case, but in terms of from the movie itself it's not so clear). Perhaps showing the couple over time, showing the level abuse escalating, promises to change going unfulfilled, etc, you would get more of a sense of what a manuipulative character the man really is.

We also didn't get much of a sense of the female character. Aside from attempting to pacify the man, her only two lines were thoughts, not spoken aloud. In a sense this was a good choice, it shows she's too afraid to speak out, but in another sense I didn't really feel I connected with her as she didn't give a lot of herself away.

The man was incredibly unreasonable, I especially liked the way he called her selfish when it was him who was guilty of it, that was a nice touch.

Again, well done for tackling an issue that effects a large number of people on a daily basis, especially one so personal to you.

A very sensitive subject wich needs a sensible touch in deed. Like others i was also confused by the music. Double tracks or did some musician really do that on purpose? It sure did the feeling a bit un-easy...

When i read your post about this film i expected either more educational or a movie with some hint on how to break the bad trend.

Also, i have no own background with anyone with this behaviour around me but i guess that people with this behaviour pretty much does these stuff at all kinds of places and times, even in front of other people where its extra humiliating?
I would had wanted to see examples of that too if that is the case.
Also if you had shown a bit more of how nice it can be when hes not around [censored!]ing, so you get a good contrast (it probably had been enough with a couple of extra seconds before he opened the door with some feelgoodmusic).

Its well made, have good dialoge and everything so its a good flick! Good work!

I thought you did a good job making us feel so sorry for the woman. However the music didn't fit as good as i thought it would. Your message in the forum and the commentary is a very good message but you didn't tie it into the movie. If you somehow added that thought into the movie that would've just touched my heart. It was well executed and the man....disgusting guy.

3 stars and an extra one for the music. It's disturbing, maybe a little short. But realistic, like you said. I hoped for a little more depth in the subject. But I agree with everything you said about domestic abuse, it's not only about violence - the psychological abuse is the worst.

Posted on January 7, 2006

Dialogue was great again - very realistic. It made the whole situation ring true. It comes straight from experience and from the heart. It's all there' It's all real. It's all very very real.
While I appreciate your efforts at bringing much-needed variety into the music you're using it just didn't fit the mood of the piece - at least not for me anyway. It took a lot out of the film for me.
You raised the bar with Hope - and I don't feel I can give this more than 3 when Hope was such an outstanding 5 star. I also agree on the abrupt nature of the ending, too - perhaps some epilogue, where she does leave him or maybe even a montage of advancing years and continuing abuse when she doesn't.
For me this is a decent film which can't keep the pace with it's heartfelt underlying message. 3 stars.
