Film Description
OK, first of all: THERE IS NO STORY!

It's my second experiment on bringing fantasy and magic into the movies. It's a duell between magicians. I would like to hear opinions, since I hope to be on my way to create some real fantasy stories if the effects look half right.

Thanks to everyone saying, that the experiment is actually working. As soon as I can dream up a story, that is short enough to not bore the pants off of everybody, I will have a try on that kind of stuff. Right now I'm working in Bryce to create some fantasy backdrops and a little costume editing might also be necessary.

@mjbcfc: The explosion shot is cut in half. It's nothing special, but since there is no frame counter in the editor, you have to look for a significant spot to do the cutting, so that both halves fit.

I really liked that. I think you had a noble cause, and even though the story was really simple, it was obviously an experimental film. (something that exists in real life, and something that really isn't explored - or even accepted much - here) Your editing was well done - probably the best use of the "no prop" movie editing style that I've seen yet.

I can't wait to see if any one takes the intitiative and tries to explore similar ideas :)

As an experiment this movie is all well and good, but an experiment does not merit higher than 3 stars, To be honest I thought it was a bit pointless, if you'd kept the experiment to yourself or built a proper film around it it would be worth the time of day, would a band release a quarter of a song to the public... Fine as an experiment but I did not feel any better for having seen it.

Wow, that was awesome! And, heck, at 2 minutes and 23 seconds, that's plenty enough story.

Very creative use of special effects and old familiar scenes to do something different! I also thought you did a good job of casting. A lot of people don't pay much attention to this, but whether using Starmaker or not, getting the right visual looks for characters (and their costumes) is important.

This 5 star rating isn't for the movie but instead it's a PLEE for you to definately do this type of movie!

The scnes flowed from one to the next and it looked like 2 actual magicians fighting!

Also when that one explosion threw him in the air did u edit it so that he turned into a skeleton half way or is it an option in one of the sliders (i wouldn't know coz i haven't used that scene before). If it was just your editing then this flick deserves a 6 star rating LOL

Well, I didn't gave the 5 stars for the quality of the movie itself (as you pointed out, it doesn't have any plot and it's a great drawback), but because you have made the impossible: created a fantasy movie with a movie creator which seemingly doesn't support this genre at all! I was thinking about making a fantasy movie myself, but I deemed it impossible after learning about the editor's limits. But now you proved that it is indeed possible: the using and editing of pre-generated scenes is simply ingenious (I didn't even think about these methods), the battle of wizards is convincing and exciting. I think it's time for a real fantasy movie, dude! Perhaps it'll be the first in TMO history... (Though I admittedly haven't seen all movies.) :)

(Could you please review my movies if you have time? Thanks!)

This experimental movie is made very good. The spells you produce with the ordinary scenes in the game are fantastic.

Very good for a strange test with no plot. They really looked like wizards, if that was what they were meant to be. The lack of music half way through brought this to four!

Excellent. It was great that you put an explanation of what you were doing here, but I think in this instance I still would of given you 5 without it. I can say your experiment here was a success. I've bookmarked this movie and hopefully will get a chance to check your page to see if you eventually made a fantasy movie which seems to be lacking in the movies online. Actually I wonder why they don't have a fantasy genre. (reviewed via Review trader)

I quite liked this even though the music stopped - the editing was nice - using the knife scenes without the knives was a good idea. A bit too many close ups on their eyes for me but a good finish to the story. As a word of caution, never call a film an experiment or a trailer - two quick ways to lose marks in TMO.

Posted on March 5, 2006
- Apasas

The editing in this was actually quite good. But as has already been said, special effects and action are completely pointless unless they back up a story. People dying does not mean anything unless we know something about them, and the special effects are explained. otherwise they just seem like manipulations of scenes fropm the movies game.

With simple STs a very simple story could get you 3 or even four stars.

Foe example, why not an introduction about an evil wizard who attacks people in the forest. And then one day a girl passed, and he thought she would be easy meat etc.

Impressive, as an experiment, and a succesful one in my opinion, I'm just going to offer suggestions for improvement if you do evolve this into a movie, which I believe you should. Obviously dialog would greatly help as well as some sound touch-ups in that some of the ends sound too choppy, also I would try and find some fantasy music instead of the western that seemed a bit out of place. The idea and use of inherent Movies effects to create a magic feeling are both great and the editing supports the usage. Anyway, good movie and I'll be looking forward to seeing an upgrade with this.

Yes, I think it works thus far, the 'lightning' and thunder noises are effective, but I'm wondering how you are going to follow that up? I cannot think of any other 'spectacular' special effects in TMO's box of tricks. Interesting to see how this develops.

Posted on February 27, 2006
- earlicus

Not sure about this one. It appeared as though you had forgottewn to insert props - I am sure you were going for the fire throwing concept (brandishing knife scene). Perhaps some voiceovers would have helped explain the movie. I am currently working on a movie with a wizard in it - but there is no wizard costume, so I too have resorted to the sci-fi trenchcoat - but in red. No pointy hat though.

I enjoyed this movie. The thing is, you have to look at it as an experimental film. If you think of it as an actual movie, you won't enjoy it, due to the lack of plot. I think that with the formula you've created, it could very well turn into a great feature film.

As a suggestion towards your final goal, maybe trying to cut together scenes using the beam effects from the laser rifles / pistols along with the hand gestures with the guns removed, might add a bit extra to the effects.

Actually, there was a story; at least more of a story than 75% of the films on TMO. Great use of editing to achieve in-game special effects in this experimental film. CowBear's rule is three-stars maximum for experimentals, teasers, trailers, etc.; in this case, they are well deserved.

Of course, since there was no story, that will cost you one star. But those were some nice special effects if you consider that you only used The Movies to create them. I hope to see some more of these kind of movies but then with a story behind them.

A cross between a tech demo of sorts and a short fantasy-style film that actually works pretty effectively in both realms...

I enjoyed Earth's Call, your previous film in this "experimental fantasy" style you've originated, and this is an even more ambitious followup. As a tech demo, you've proven that a "spell casting wizard" character can effectively be cobbled out of the animations and effects we have here, using clever editing and sound effects. And as a story, it's a little slim in substance (more of an incident than a story) but still effective to make your point.

Good job - now that you've proven to yourself and others that it can be done, how about a real movie using what you've accomplished in these first two. Now that would be something I'd REALLY want to see.

For the purposes of the film I give you 5 star cos seeing as that the effects we can do are some what restricted, you did a really good job! Should definately try out some proper fantasy stuff if it's gonna be as good as that!

It was good as an experiment due to the great editing however I felt if you experimenting with the FX in the film, it was just standard fire scene which you get in the game. Anyway, it worked and I hope to see it put into a film context with a storyline which hopefully be groovy to watch! But for this, can't give highter then a two, sorry!

Nice editing to give the impression that we're seeing magic being thrown around. When/if we get a free roaming camera, I think it's really going to open this sort of experimentation up since you would be better able to hide the flaws. I thought the movie got off to a bit of a normal start, with music that didn't really suit a 'horror'. Although I d have to say that it was a good short flick, with the original concept of superheroes and good use of scene editing was made! A background story would be interesting, like a prologue, to how she got her powers and some dialogue!!! Supberb action packed film!

The way you clipped props out of weapon sequences to simulate mystic gestures was very inspired... and the creative use of editing and pyrotechnics scenes produced a pretty good bit of "magic". It wasn't perfect, but you're pushing the envelope in ways that few others are. Nice job.

Some very imaginative use of cutting and effects to create the action you want, but I think you have missed a few tricks.
You could, for example, have one of the magicians "call down" the fog, or conjur up horses, dogs (please not chickens, rabbits or apes!)lizardmen, swamp monsters etc to attack the other magician.
But yes, push that envelope!

The movie was brillantly crafted, I loved the way the scenes flowed together and the battle scene was great. Keep up the good work

As this is an experiment, I'll give you an extra star for the effort! I think it might be an uphill battle, though. (Hopefully, LH will supply us with fantasy scenes/sets in the future!)

A good use of editing and prop replacement to replecate the spells. It's good to see someone using the movies inventively. Hopefully you will release a feature length fantasy movie soon as you have great potential!

5 stars for the explosion/turning into skeleton edit! Have you tried using sci-fi gun battles, but removing the guns as props? I don't know if that will work or not. Anyway, keep experimenting!

I know this was probably pretty tough to edit, and took some time. It turned out rather well.. it only falls short of five stars because of a dead moment or two in the duel.. but.. overall very well done!

Very nice magic effects. The fact that there is hardly a story didn't matter. The sound could be much better. Music and sound effects are much needed.
But pretty nice anyway, looking forward to what you come up with next.

great use of editing. Actually looked like they were fighting. Have to agree with another reviewer. Some of the editing was a bit choppy, but I can overlook that. Great work and keep it up!

A few of the cuts in the explosions were a bit choppy--but given what you're working with, I think you've done an excellent job! Keep it up.

I know, I know...no story. But it's MISSING! The special effects are so good it's a shame that they are "wasted"! Some inner monologues would help maybe.
Technically it's very good. I thought about cutting special effects myself but I think the minimal "frames" you can produce are not nearly small enough for smooth performance. (What I had in mind would need that)

Overall: Fine movie, new ideas and I wish it had a story.

Keep it up!

Not bad for an experiment. The magic was interesting, although there wasn't any dialogue or plot in the movie, which prevents me from giving it a five.

Good luck with your future movies.

It was really well put together, and if used in the context of an actual film, would be amazing to watch. (SPOILER) The scene where the guy is "burned alive" turning into a skeleton is brilliantly edited.(END SPOILER) Experiment or not, I give it a 4 for the editing alone.

Nice essay.
Too short to get more than 3 stars, you could have made it longer and work more on editing...
However, good work on trying to do the impossible, produce a fantasy movie !

There was some great editing in that. I love the idea of this type of movie. If you can get a good story to go along with it, you will have a winner. Good luck taking this to the next level.

Because it was just an experiment I'll give you 4 stars. But wonderful job on making a fantasy movie with The Movies :)

- Fedaredan

Hmmm... I thought for a short, I could actually see a developed plot that was entertaining in its own.

But the use of custom content was great, pushing boundaries I've not seen tried before. The Soundtracks REALLY added to the effects. The effects themselves do look a little choppy in parts, but it's a new and exciting experiment that I think promotes tremendous upside.

Great Work!

Nice work! Your experiment has worked - the fantasy/magical elements were impressive and seamless, and your editing is masterful. You say there is no story, but this is still no collection of random scenes - there is a definite continuity throughout and a genuinely creepy atmosphere at the beginning.
Keep it up!

I think you did a great job, and while the effects weren't great, I'm pretty sure they were as good as one could get out of this game. I'm not sure how successful it'll be, but I encourage you to try a "real" fantasy movie.

Nice to see someone workingon a project like this. It's to bad only fire effects are available. Have you tried using some backdrop work? Maybe a lightning bolt on the background preceeded by a .2 second flash of a white screen. It might give a nice effect (and add a spell to your heroes spellbook)

The only shot that looked new and worth using as far as special effects was the explosion where he is burnt to the bone. Don't be afraid to experiment visually with an actual movie with a story.

- SHERWINLIU

I think it's a worthy experiment. I dont' remember seing any fantasy genre clips here yet, and the effects look pretty decent. I am hoping you will pull off a real fantasy story, let me know when it is available, and good luck.

Posted on December 29, 2005
- BOLCH
