Film Description
In October of 1962, after reviewing newly acquired intelligence, President John F. Kennedy informed the world
that the Soviet Union was building secret missile bases in Cuba, a mere 90 miles off the shores of Florida.
After weighing such options as an armed invasion of Cuba and air strikes against the missiles, Kennedy decided
on a less dangerous response. In addition to demanding that Russian Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev remove all the
missile bases and their deadly contents, Kennedy ordered a naval quarantine (blockade) of Cuba in order to
prevent Russian ships from bringing additional missiles and construction materials to the island. In response
to the American naval blockade, Premier Khrushchev authorized his Soviet field commanders in Cuba to launch
their tactical nuclear weapons if invaded by U.S. forces. Deadlocked in this manner, the two leaders of the world's
greatest nuclear superpowers stared each other down for seven days - until Khrushchev blinked. On October 28,
thinking better of prolonging his challenge to the United States, the Russian Premier conceded to President
Kennedy's demands by ordering all Soviet supply ships away from Cuban waters and agreeing to remove the missiles
from Cuba's mainland. After several days of teetering on the brink of nuclear holocaust, the world breathed a
sigh of relief.

So what if the missles were actually launched? What would have happened? How the world have been changed, and who
would have survived? Full Retaliatory Response is a movie about one man that survived the nuclear holocaust. This
is the first movie in a trilogy series that tells his story, and introduces the main character to the viewers.

NOTES: I spent some time researching this movie, and putting it together. The script came out perfect, however
when the script was moved to Post Production, it became plagued with several bugs that currently cause mass amounts
of frustration with The Movies Game. Sound looping bugs, blinking corpses, and lighting effects. For instance you
will notice in the cellar scenes that the lighting changes, and I shot all of those scenes with a more darker effect,
but Post Production decided to turn some of the lights back on. I even reshot the scenes again, hoping it would fix
this problem, but it just happened again. So rather than spend another two weeks of pulling my hair out, I decided
to go ahead, and release the movie.

All the custom sound effects, and historical sound clips are not copywriten. They are free to use by anyone. I hope
you enjoy the movie, and I look forward to reading all the constructive comments, and criticism from the
community here.

EDIT 2: The Radio broadcast by Moscow is the REAL version, it's a recording from that time period, when radio wasn't as clear as it is today. It was the best version I could find. I interviewed a few people that actually heard that broadcast, and listening to it, they said it reminded them of the first time they'd heard it, and it was still just as hard to understand now as it was then. :)

I also do plan to explain how the main characer didn't die from exposure to radiation in the next film.

Thank you everyone for the reviews! :)

Speical thanks goes out to [CoFR]Old Geezer for helping me find the information I needed to make this film, special thanks also goes out to [CoFR]eagle1_77375, and [CoFR]PuG_NaYshuS for giving me a hands on account of what it was like to live through the Cuban Missile Crisis, and how scary that time period was.

My faith that good movies are still being made is constantly being re-affirmed. This film completely engages the attention of the viewer with exactly the right things: and that??s story pacing, characterization, and brilliant use of historical facts. I usually consider movies above eight minutes a gambit, since it takes strong qualities to keep the viewer??s attention. And you, sir, had no problem keeping my attention from the beginning sequence to the last frame.

Kudos on your technical merits, despite the buggy post-production (and I applaud you for your valiant efforts in squashing those darn bugs!). Very, cleanly edited together ?? most impressive. The voice over was a bit sketchy at first, but quickly became solid and remained that way ??til the end. Another brilliant move is the appropriate usage of both broadcasts from the time period. Really sucked me into the moment.

The bomb sequence was riveting to watch. Although, the only thing I didn??t care for was that ??electric shock?? effect used for the decomposing bodies. It??s a nitpick, since that??s basically the only thing in this film I can knock against.

Speaking of sound, another kudos is warranted to the idea of letting your film be scored with silence. Silence is cheap, copyright-free, and is damn effective in this instance. It??s very tempting to pepper a picture with music, rather than let the nuanced audio effects do the storytelling.

I??m very much looking forward to part two. You??ve definitely shown your stuff when it comes to effectively piecing a one-man-journey tale together.

Five stars. No question.

Great great movie. One of the first I was actually sad to see end. There are a couple things I would have liked to have seen but that stuff is personal preference.

JerseysRay is an idiot. The first thing that will make me dock a movie, ESPECIALLY one that is a narrative is if the VO isnt perfect. This one was, as it was very clear and said well, most you will hear volume issues and wind noises. Ray complained that there was a lack of emotion which makes me wonder if he actually watched the film from the begining. Its 2010 and the guy who has now had a really hard life is telling a story he probably told a 1000 times. If it was in the first person during that time then it would be a different story but the main character has been out of those events for nearly 50 years. Its funny how someone who doesnt have a studio can say it could have been done much much better, play the game then say that pfff

Anyway, really enjoyed it (I thought the siren noise and the speech were awesome) and I think, based upon whats in the top 25 and the quality of most on this site deserves to be number 1.

Originality - ***** Excellent movie, great take on the post holocaust and even better take on the holocaust as it was happening.
Storyline - ***** Great story, great attempt at trying to explain what might've happened....
Dialogue - ***** Great dialogue, wonderful narration.
Special effects/sound effects - ***** Excellent editing, wonderfully done to show the victims of the nuclear explosions. I loved the authentic radio and television broadcasts. The way you showed the people being exposed to the holocaust was excellent.
Overall - ***** This was excellent, no doubt about it, my pick for TMO movie of the year so far.

A true masterpiece! You create a nice cirty-atmosphere followed by the horrifying bombing which u made very realistic! Even I got scared when the first one fell. Dark and real. Maybe wanna start your intonation a bit more lively in the beginning then making it grungier and grungier. Overall beautiful!

Excellent. The only bad point I would mention would be that your voice droned on a bit, you COULD have added the voices of the time, but maybe that would have taken away the atmosphere. Other than that, a fine piece of work.

Full Retaliatory Response is a well-written and superbly crafted film. The movie had all the elements from that time period, and really made me feel like I was in the 60's, especially with that radio broadcast. Elliminating those stupid bugs was also another bonus, and your hard work and effort really showed up in this movie. Fantastic work, keep it up!

A slowly told story that keeps the viewer watching from the beginning to the end. Effective voice-acting helps making it even more exciting. Not even the bugs in the post-production could ruin this movie.

An utterly amazing and stunning film that had me begging for more all the time.
Although you said that the glitches were almost unbearable, I didnt seem bothered by any of them. And nice work with set dressings and the radio broadcast!!

But 1 tiny thing: When the guy was buriyng the other bum guy, i thought that the camera location was a little iffy, since i didnt notice them until 3/4 thru the scene

BUT GREAT GREAT JOB!!!

A very well polished film. However, there is always room for improvement. I do have some advice about narration and writing. The first rule of filmmaking is the same for writing stories: show, don't tell. For example, when your character steps out in a police uniform and alludes to the force he doesn't need to go on and say "by the way, I'm a police officer." The audience can see that he is talking about a police force and he has just stepped out in uniform, so it is already clear what his job is. Try to balance your narration with visual elements, even though it's The Movies and you can't always show exactly what you want. Sometimes a little music and activity can portray what is going through a character's head more deeply than simply telling it like it is.

This was really good, not the most original plot but executed really well. The only thing I didnt like was the odd noise when people turned into skellies, not sure what that noise was suposed to be but I suppose there had to be some kind of effect. But even so, this didnt distract from the movie at all. Nicely paced and got into the character nicely, voice overs were very clear and all the volumes were right. I found this movie because I liked your constructive review of someone elses so I thought Id check you out, glad I did, good work.

Editing :4/4 - Good job on the editing, of course with only one main character throughout most of the movie, editing is pretty easy.
Dialogue : 3/3 - Voice overs were good, a little soft, but still understandable.
Plot/Originality : 4/5 - Original, The plot was a basic survival plot. However the character didn't really seam to change or grow during the ordeal, at least not from what I could tell. For this type of movie, characterization plays an important part and a bit of growth would have made this movie really good.
Entertainment : 4/5 - Survival movie just have never been my cup of tea. This one was still well done.
Music/Sound : 1/3 - No music, A little mood music could have really helped this movie.
Total : 16/20 - 4 stars - Good job

Very good! I think it would have been a much more entertaining movie, if it wasn't in the narrative. It makes me wonder, why would I want to watch the next part of it? It doesn't seem as if anything will happen. If it was in 3rd person, it could be much more intense, or perhaps a movie in 2nd person would bring the most intensity. Huh. Great movie though, definitely, it seemed just about as real as you can get in on The Movies.

A well thought out and well scripted piece. I recently marked down a film for overuse of first person voiceover, but this piece shows it works. The voiceover does not replace the visuals, rather complements and enhances them. The desolation of the post-holocaust world comes across well. Nice use of original broadcasts too. First time I've heard that in a film on here.

Well done movie. Old man voice actor a little bit bland on opening monologue, in fact, you should mix monologue with actual voice acting to spice it up a bit. Sound sync seems off. Reacts too quickly to "retalitory response" quote. "High speed chases" clip was over already before narator mentioned it.

The monologue remindinded me of Bruce Willis...

Conclusion: Well put together, super dialogue and effects. Top Notch

Very good overall. Good voice acting, good editing, (though the shot of people screaming at the atomic blast could have been cut tighter, I think, and I don't think the electric shock sound effect was unnecessary during the burn squence) and good pacing as well. The "to be continued" at the end took me by surprise, as this very well could stand on it's own as a single movie, the classic cautionary tale of nuclear warfare and a story of what could have happened during those fateful moments.

A very well done movie with historical references that are well documented. I enjoy a movie that offers the watcher a "what if" scenario. You really made this one work. The narration was very well done, the editing was solid, the plot line carried out to perfection and the sound effects (radio, sirens, etc...) were astonishing. All I can say is that this is a masterpiece and I am looking forward to Part II of this series. Keep up the great work! You'll get my 5 stars and the "Valtharius the Mad Enjoys A Good Holocaust" Award.

This was indeed a great movie. It could maybe be cut down here and there, like when the bomb goes off and during the russian broadcast and places like that.

Its daring to make a flick totally without any music. First i was disturbed by the fact that you didnt use any music to help your story be interested to the viewer, but in the end i understand that maybe it could had destroyed the story too. I still think it could be better with some music, but i guess you have to choose carefully and work hard to get it right.

Im impressed by the setting, the reserarch, the script and the VO, this would easily have been a masterpiece if the things i pointed at was corrected!!!

An ambitious project and very good realised. I noticed a few problems though. Foremost the use of panic scenes during the alarm. You should have sticked with the cars in a jam, the people staring into the heaven and the officers. The panic scenes are ruining the atmosphere, they're ruining every serious effort in my opinion, cause they are premade in a totally ridiculous fashion.

Another problem I don't blame you for is the absence of lighting effects. They aren't in the game and so your transformation from human to skeleton doesn't look all too realistic. I have faced that problem in one of my movies too.

Otherwise I would hope to see more films like that with an ambitious plot, good VOs and nearly perfect cuts.

Superb. I have studied the cuban missile crisis and the use of archive sound etc was great!
Your knowledge of physics isn't great is it? you can't be knocked into a cellar by a nuclear bomb...
and the radiation would be lethal... for 100's of years!

All the same pretty good.

Excellent. Done to a very high standard. You obviously put alot of effort into this and deserve alot of credit. If I was to pick out one flaw, it did seem a tiny bit too long, but on the whole superb.

The featured reviews say all I want to say about this excellent film, but I'd like to add that the author makes good use of the scenes that came with the game to tell his story. The action and narrative is almost always spot on. Worth a watch.

I review as I go, bare with me.

The fan fare is starting to get a little overplayed on Movies. The VO's are decent but if you're going to have an old man, do try to make him sound somewhat old. It's hard to take a speech from Kennedy serious when I'm watching a man pace in his underwear.

The story was well thought out and the scenes were used their full capacity. I'd maybe add just a tad more emotion to the storytellers voice though.

All in all, I look forward to seeing more.

Overall, I found this a well put together movie, with excellent voice acting and a good use to cutting the scenes for good effect. I do admit to getting a little bit bored with the narrative occasionally, hence the 4 stars.

excellent voice overs and sound effects used trhoughout, the siren is really emotive and grabs audience. maybe you could have mixed the dialogue more with direct speech as well as the monologue. this would help create a greater interest in the audio and get over the more important aspects of the story.

overall an excellent narrative and does what a lot of great films do contain an element of truth and create your own unique fantasy around it. well done!

Good= The story and execution of the script were well done.

Bad= You might try adding a little more emotion to the narrative. The narrator sounds very bored and thus fails to evoke as much emotion from the viewer as it potentially could evoke. The addition of carefully selected music would also give the movie even more atmosphere and emotional weight.

This movie ultimately left me curious as to how the story progresses from its current point. Is a sequel in the works?

Since I really like history, you had me interested when I read the the description. The detonation of the bomb did send chills down my spine, which I figure would do to anyone. The radio and TV clippings were awesome. The only thing that I didn't like, and I know you said you were going to explain it in the next film, was his survival in that cellar, which I'm not sure if it is possible, and his walking around a city covered in a radioactive fallout. Music could have also helped it a bit.

It still amazes me what can be achieved with The Movies and some creativity. Excellent work. Keep it up.

That was fantastic. Editing was great, voiceover was superb, story was interesting. Use of stock audio on the tv was another high point. As was the bomb effect (considering the limitations of the software, it was superb).

You mention the 'blinking corpse' bug. I liked that effect, it was as if she was just too weak to move from radiation sickness, life slowly drifting away.

A brilliantly made and chilling reminder of what could have been.

This little gem should probably rate a full five stars...and believe me, it pains me to take anything at all away from it. This is a very highly creative piece of work that suffers only in one area, but as badly as I hate to do so, I must reserve that fifth star for the film that eventually gets every detail just right.

Technically, I'm wowed. Great edits--the effect of people being "nuked" was very well done in particular. Very solid use of the available scenes, actors, and costumes to paint a vivid picture.

Pacing is excellent. A nice round backstory brought to sudden shocking climax, and a well-done portrayal of the personal struggles that followed.

The use of actual sound clips from the period lends the film an air of authenticity, and there's a bonus clap-on-the-back for doing your homework and the effort it must have taken to research and locate those sound bytes. Nicely done.

There is only one area that I felt could have stood to be improved, and that was the voice acting. The VO carries a sort of film noir attitude that fits the mood of the opening scenes--waking up, just another day, etc. but falls short of being appropriate for the more shocking/thrilling sequences later in the film--although I cannot guess whether this is a flaw in design or execution. A little more effort could have been applied to the voice work.

At any rate, a top-drawer piece of work that only falls short of that fifth star because there is hope that somewhere out there is a film without flaw. Kudos to you for your diligence and creativity, and I look forward to seeing more films from this studio in the future.

I'm going to give feedback regardless of the medium you're using to tell the story, rather than offering an inflated score to encourage a mediocre artist in a young art form. That means you don't get a five, you don't get a four. You get a three. A real world 3, a 3 with potential.

I really appreciated the visual tricks you used. However, the voice acting was flat and emotionless, more like a recitation than somebody sharing some of the most exciting events of their life. Also, the writing of the voice script was off. It really felt padded, and I'm not sure if you wrote the padding to match the video, or assembled the video to match the script. In any case, I feel like the story would have had a lot more punch if it had been 7 or 8 minutes rtaher than 10. I also suggest more emotion for the voice acting.

Great plot. Great idea. Great script. Great execution. Horribly boring voiceover. I mean I wouldn't expect professional sounding voiceovers, but it really sounds as if the person doing them is bored with it. There is absolutely no emotion, some of the words are slightly mumbled and it just comes close to ruining the movie. However, the movie itself is pure gold. Everything is executed brilliantly. The sounds are authentic and true, adding to the realism present. I absolutely loved how much this film relates to real life. Great Job!

An absolutely stunning movie, truly captures the shock and horror of that time period, exploring a historical "what-if" to devastating effect. The voiceover seemed a bit unemotional, as had been said before, but in terms of the story it makes sense - not so much because he's told it a lot before, but because he HASN'T told it before - having so much time to internalize it, you begin to get used to it - such memories can deaden you. A very interesting look at the entire issue, and it truly captures the fear and horror of the day with incredible accuracy. The scenes involving the ripping of flesh off the body was especially gruesome, and especially good considering the limitations of the game. A custom sound of sizzling might have fit in better with it, however, but on the whole it could have been much worse.

On the whole, it's a gripping panorama of events, brilliantly crafted and researched, and a movie that truly showcases the best that The Movies can make. I think that if anything needs improving, it's The Movies itself - where's the "fade-to-white" effects for that sucker? Might have helped the atomic detonation sequence a lot...

I would recommend this movie to anyone and everyone who is interested in The Movies. It is a must-watch film - period!

My God...EXCELLENT! An absolute masterpiece. Usually long movies bore me but this was amazing. It raises a serious what if question. This movie could be used to show the horror that nuclear weapons can bring. If used the right way you could move entire cities and show them what nuclear bombs can create.

The technical use of scenes is absolutely superb and special effects stunning. The radiation effect on the people changing to skeletons was cool and original. McCain is an absolute master at utilizing technology. This critic can tell the he has done much research on the topic and that makes for an even better movie.

Excellent! I read your synopsis and foolishly thought that this was going to be a boring old history film, but decided to take a look seeing as it had 5 stars and this film doesn't deserve anything less! An excellent plot and idea. Though this film definetly reminds nme of 'War Of the Worlds (2005)', except without the aliens and Cuban Missile Crisis Scenario. That is probably why I enjoyed it so much. WOTW was definetly one of my favourite films of the past year. Anyway, before I start to rant about WOTW. I'm jealous! I'm actually jealous. Any pointers or suggestions you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

GREAT JOB McCain! Ive been waiting for someone to make a post nuclear holocaust movie! AND YOU DID A TERRIFIC JOB! I myself am making a nuclear holocaust type movie, which I was inspired to make based off of the Fallout computer games. It would really help me out if you could tell me where you found the mushroom cloud picture and help me tips on your special effects. Also, I saw where you wrote that your movie was having the same problems with bugs like everyone else, so how did you overcome them to make this great movie! All these would really help me out because I want to make great quality movies just like this one. Hope to hear from you, and once again GREAT JOB! Cant wait for the sequals!

Thank you for your high-quality alternate reality film. The special effects were well thought out and executed. The movie has social value also, by reminding us how dangerously close we really were, to complete destruction at that time.

Wow, this should be #1; without a doubt. Very involving story, good tech, didn't really notice the issues you mention above. My only gripe was that one of the bodies shown after he comes out of the cellar has open eyes and even blinks once. Unless she's a zombie, that may be should have been cut a second quicker (although, if she had been a zombie, you could have gone for a cool horror movie type ending).Cant wait to see the next part!

This is an excelent movie! I've watched it twice so far myself, and I'll be emailing it to several friends that I know will also enjoy it. You took historical elements, and turned it into a fascinating "what if" apocalyptic movie. The way you transitioned people being incinerated by the Nuclear blast as classic, and reminded me of the old 1983 film The Day After. That movie scared the hell out of me the first time I saw it, and made the hair on the back of my neck stand up when I heard the air raid sirens going off. Your movie did that same exact thing! Fantastic work here!

A great alternative history movie. I commend you for finding and utilizing the radio airplays. I also give you props for using the zombie paint skins and skeleton costumes for uses other than a horror movie (although your setting for your story is horrific!). Excellent job.

Because I'm knit picky I give it a 4. Hehe that's a very good rating from me, considering most movies I'd only give a 2 or a 3. Now to explain why a 4 and not a 5 :)

There was a few scenes that would have a prop in the backround, then in the next, it would be missing, and the scene following right after its there again. Example the radio in the backround, the first time he was in the room watching the tv.

Overall the movie was superb, but the voice overs kind of felt *thinks* dry... If lacked a lot of the emotion that was necessary to keep the watcher interested in the film... For people like me for example, hearing a monologue like this droning on in the same tonal voice it kinda kills the experience of the story you are trying to tell.

The story itself is well thought out, the dialog was well written and planned. It just needed a bit of hot sauce on it to spice it up and make it more interesting. It reminded me of when my dad would read me a book at night when i was a kid, versus when my mom would. My dad would just read through it monotonly and i would find myself daydreaming about lil parts and not really paying attention to the story. When my mom read it however, she would act out the little parts, and get into the story, and keep me locked in to every detail that was going on. :)

I didnt see any post prod glitches (Except one dead body with eyes open, but hell... so, its a dead body with eyes open!) and your probably better off having the cellar scenes lit more, sometimes they are way too dark.

Great concept; the extra touches that make it good - the radio clips, decent use of backdrops, panic in the streets. Some of the dialogue was long-winded, such as all the inventory items he discovered in the basement. Overall, created a convincing feel of "what if." Interested to see what Part II may hold.

Obviosly JerseysRay is the greatest critic and director in the history of 'the movies' I mean he is so damned good he dont even need a studio.

So if it can be done much better. lets see you try.

Posted on December 20, 2005
- JerseysRay

Technically okay, but more than a little dull and your voice actor is absolutely wretched. I can see being a little numb to the horror, but his complete lack of emotion made me drowsy. This could be done much, much better.

You've been kind enough to rate a few of my movies, so I'm glad to be able to return the favor. This was an excellent effort, with good VO and using the scenes available in the game to good effect. Using the historical radio recordings was a good idea and I'm sure will inspire several people to explore using them as well. I'll be interested to see where you go from here, as this section had a solid enough conclusion to make it stand up well by itself.

Only thing i did not like or found to be out of wack was the fact that the movie took place in la but the backdrops out of his apartment were all nyc... other that that excelent!

- alcibiades

This movie is fantastic.

You really understand how to use suggestion to transform perception. By the end of the film, those simple scenes of the city set with the mist and the oddly-parked cars ARE a postapocalyptic landscape.

I'm starting to see a pattern on TMO where movies that use narration end up working better than movies that use full dialogue. Probably because of the sound synch bugs? Anyway, you didn't try to do the impossible, and that shows directing smarts.

Great use of backgrounds and stills to convey information and to individualize your film. Backgrounds are THE establishing shot workaround, I guess.

If I had to find nitpicks, I'd say that the pacing scenes where the protagonist listens to the radio got a little static and repetitive. Maybe you could have cut them up more? And you might want to reshoot the panic scenes with more extras. Oh, and if you ever do reshoot it, did you ever consider having the "unknown" survivor who breaks in and who the protagonist kills turn out to be his ex-partner? That's what I thought the payoff was going to be when he carried the guy back up the stairs. That would have been a real kick in the ass.

Great work. Five stars. Part 2 is eagerly anticipated.
