Film Description
All images used in the backdrops of this film are Public Domain, meaning, there is no copyright, and I have permission by The Unites States of America to use these images anyway I see fit. This also means I am not violating Lionhead's policy.

This movie is a test to see how well custom backdrops can be utilized to enhance the visual special effects of a movie made inside The Movies game.

If you want to read how I created this animated backdrop, I have created a thread in the forums about this at http://allboards.lionhead.com/showthread.php?t=119482

I did not edit this movie in anyway, shape, or form outside of The Movies. All of this was done inside the game. The custom backdrops were all made before I started producing this film inside the game.

Although Warner did originally have a copyright on this movie, and Warner Brothers has renewed many of it's copyrights, due to Warner missing deadlines to file proper copyright renewal forms, not all of their older works were renewed. Private SNAFU is one of those fortunate victoms. The government has strict rules about copyright. Warner broke some of those rules and now we can enjoy Private SNAFU as a result.

I can't rate this as a movie, since it's a tech demo.

But as a tech demo, it's truly amazing, showing the real potential of The Movies and more elbow grease than most people will have in their whole lives....

The animation is something I'd think long and hard about ever using in a movie...the effect would be striking, but the amount of effort to get that effect is probably well beyond anything I, certainly, would be willing to put into it.

Still this is an amazing achievement, and you should be congratulated for the time and effort you put into it. Extremely nice job.

This film really pushes the envelope as to what can be done using the game. I salute you for going out and doing something 100% original. Great work and I intend to see some new uses of the technology in future films.

So much effort must have went into this...oddly enough, I was just thinking not long ago about how well a full animation could be pulled off with just backdrops and the stage set...you've proven it can be done rather well. Nicely done!

I understand that I alot of effort must of went into creating this (thru the post production) however it isn't really your own movie and you just got around 430 scenes and used it as a backdrop. The movie (or cartoon) itself was average however it is a very interesting idea/concept you have used here and if it was a tech demo, the highest I can give you is still 3 stars. I hope to see your future movies using these customs backdrops used effectively within the actually MOVIES format.

Maybe Lionhead should try to simplify this process, if they are to give users more freedom in making their movies. This brute force attempt is admirable, but not something useful to users with little time in their hands. BTW, there seems to be a slight choppy effect that makes it feel like a real old movie, pretty cool.

Agree with 'httjs' and 'Soulsword'. Since I came on this site, I made it clear that originality is the most important thing to me and should be to everyone. And I mean original in characters, editing etc. Not stupid 'technical' stuff such as this. Which is also why I hate King Kong movies (Concept isn't original)

I couldn't care less if this was in 3D. Still 1 star.

Posted on December 24, 2005

I only gave you 4 stars for your work o wait a sec i just remebered you get money for me posting good ratings well i don't want to hand out free money so......
ok now its good 3stars i thought you did alot of work but i rate movies for what i just saw there in that moment and what i saw sucked o wait that is not professional to say it like that... ok now 2 stars what i saw had no voice over and was not original you did alot of work with the backdrops and stuff but your film was horrible it looked like watching a movie on d..i---a(_!!!l##*^$%^l up Dial up. sorry but this is where i give this thing one star.
Next time i would go with whats on the screen not what other people won't see.

0 for originiality since you simply transposed someone elses movie into this format. I'll give you that it took alot of time and effort to pull this off but you could have proven your point by creating your own material.
O for characters - not yours.
0 for story - not yours.
5 for technical achievement.
Hope I never have to 1 star a movie again.

You did a great deal of technological work and editing, and that is something I can only realize must have been a pain. However, you didn't create, write, or come up with the story yourself.

Wow, I feel like giving you five stars just for effort, so that's what I've done!
Great little film, too, but I can't really give you the credit for that, can I? Loads of work, though, and an inspiring idea for those willing to put in the hours.
Congratulations to you.

I had actually started on Apollyon before I saw this. But you really took the animated backdrop to the extreme. I know what a huge pain in the ass it was just to make a few seconds of animation, so this must've been friggin child birth. While not really an original story, I will give you 5 stars on technical merit alone. Now lets see what you can do with an original idea.

I like it when people expand the technological potential of The Movies on the internet! The only problem was that it didn't really pay attention to any sort of plot... although I laughed when that guy got shot by a bunch of torpedoes... so painful.

Kepp up the innovations!

Though the work you've put on this is impressive, you basically exploited the game engine to produce a cartoon that's not related to The Movies at all.

I would give you one star, but I'll give you two for your effort; I'd really like to see that technique linked with a real TM movie, and then I'd gladly give you five stars.

This has got to be one of the hardest movies to rate I've come across. You technical and editing skills are definately superior and worthy of 5 stars. The originality and enterainment value leaves me sorely disappointed and thinking 2 stars. Averaging the two would be 3.5 stars. For the supreme effort you put in this, I will round up.

Great job, pulling animation into the limelight. It's too bad the framerate couldn't be improved, but for a short film, and especially a black & white one, it wasn't too poor. I appreciate the effort you spent putting this together.

Ok im glad you put work into that but the problem was it that you didnt use a single ouch from the actual game other than the stage set. Srry but i cant give a movie a star when it wasnt really a movie at all. It was some cartoon. I hope you are not mad about this review.

first off you cant put animated gif's in for backgrounds. All backgrounds need to be converted to a .DDS file. And .dds files are not animated. this had to be some crazy editing. This is the first animated film ive seen here, I was thinking of doing a stick figure one but got caught up in making mods.

It was a tad choppy but with the program you are using thats understandable. The Movies isnt made for easy animation but you showed It can be done.

Although this may not be original work, Its Warner Brothers responsibility to renew copyrights, and if they forget. Well its free to use.

I've gotta agree with a few of the others. It's not your work, and can be done much easier (and less painfully) in a different program using the same images. I gave a 2 because I know the effort went into it, but I can't go higher than that and feel good about the score.

no originality.
this is a place to upload original stories made using the movies.
what does your movie prove? that you can use the movies to make cartoons? there are easier ways to do this.
stars should be awarded on quality of work, originality of story, and acting.
they should not be awarded for how much work was put in

Words and the english language cannot describe what I thought when I saw this and realised how you made it. You must have been a nervous wreck at the end of that! I just got images of the post production screen and I had to turn away from the monitor at times. I felt faint.
If this had been incorporated into a movie - it woulda been a five, which makes it sound like I haven't appreciated the herculean effort involved. It almost deserves a five because people are gonna rip this off.
Just... if only it had been in some form of context... maybe even if it had been a simple Autumn/Winter fade sequence... surronded by a small story... I dunno... I didn't do this and it's hard to comment...
Put it this way: I'm giving a two minute film that was purely a technical test four stars and I feel like I'm not doing it justice. That speaks volumes.
If I ever see you in a pub I'm buying you a pint.

Dude everyone can do that it's just ripping a cartoon and doing some stop-motion you didn't make it up yourself you didn't draw it yourself so not really impressive but because your the first who thought about doing it that deserves a plus. Like the idea but it would have been better if you have drawn it yourself and even better if you used some thing of the game cause this had nothing to do with the game. But anyway nice try i applaud your effort and trouble!

I've seen brief snips of Snafu's wartime propoganda and, of course, his Superman film. Good to see him still making films after 65 years :)

An excellent job! The movement of the animation along with the nice soundtrack was quite reminiscent of some of the (I think its called) german expressionism of the 30s. Any chance of seeing your version of The Cabinet of Dr Caligari?

5 stars for technical effort alone. In ten hours I could only make 10 movies or 20 bad ones :)

5 stars for the technical achievement...

It's not a "brilliant" idea as lots of people are saying: I'm sure lots of people (myself included) have thought of it, but decided it's not worth the effort. To create this, you don't need to use the movies game, this is just a cartoon.

Sure, it could be used to create moving backdrops, such as if, say, you want to have a crowd behind the person walking and talking and stuff, but you didn't use this for that. You just uploadeded a cartoon that you didn't even make yourself.

I give you props for putting so much work into this, but it was really a waste of time that you didn't need to use the movies for.

I rated this as if it was any other movie, and as if the scenes you used were actually in the game, because I rate on content, not on "innovation".

Just because you put a lot of work into it doesn't mean it deserves a 5.

As good as an expirament this was.... I don't see why so many people are giving you 5 stars. Now hear me out before Im tarred and feathered. Yes 10 hours of your life is gone now and you worked really hard on it, that dosen't mean its a good idea. An example would be I worked 10 minutes on a math problem only to find out later I did the entire problem incorrect. Will the teacher see all my work and decide to give me credit... no. I do find that this is a great achievement but did you really need the movies game to do this? You could of used windows movie maker (for those of you that use windows)or hell even a slide show to do this. Good effort but a waste of a good movie tool.

OMFG, Haven't seen anything like it. The weird thing is that this really looks like an old cartoon. Incredible!

No interesting storyline, more of something that the in-game scriptwriters could have done. Didn't make me think at all and it doesn't really have that "WOW" factor.

I agree that the effort alone is worth five stars. I'm sure you agree that content is not a factor, as this is an experiment. The value of proving the point to the rest of the TMO community is significant, however. I don't know that I'd spend the time, but I was toying with short, realistic opening title and credits on my films using the stage and custom backdrops. The problem I've had is that the stage backdrops are apparently not the same size as other backdrops (or there's a vignetting problem) and the camera is not truly perpendicular to the backdrop. How did you solve the first problem (i.e., the size of the visible backdrop image); how did you flatten the image as backdrops are curved, but I don't see this problem here; and how did you adjust for the slightly offset angle of the camera? The results are not perfect, but far better than I've been able to manage. Please post a tutorial--we will all be grateful.

Content/Idea: This is extraordinary. 5/5

Goofs: None. 5/5

Tech: Goddamn you must be tired by now. 5/5

Sound: Good setting. 5/5

Atmosphere: This lacks a little, but what can I say. I was stunned, when I watched the movie. Thinking about how you did it... realizing, that you were just putting all the stills together... 5/5

Overall: 5 stars! Keep up the good work. But try something simpler next time ;)
