Film Description
Ive always been fascinated by the ceasefire of Christmas 1914. So heres a little movie I put together about it. It does not have any character development *NO* I repeat *NO* massive bloody scenes. So if thats what your looking for, Move along. I wanted to make a short movie about that event. nothing more than the event that happened. All soldiers are anonymous on purpose.

I could not find a royalty free version of 'Stille Nacht', Trust me I looked. And learning to sing it in German proved difficult since I just don't pronounce things in German very well.

Sadly the Last known member of the Christmas Truce passed away on Nov. 21st. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051121/od_nm/britain_veteran_dc

This movie broke into the top 10 just briefly, until it was one stared to 20th and then it floated around 15 for a few days. This was my highest ranking movie of all time.

This Christmas, I'm not praying for world peace. I'm setting my sights a bit lower and praying that people learn how to spell. I'm familiar with the story told by this film, and there's absolutely nothing knew offered here. The selected shots are pedestrian and dull, a true cavalcade of stock footage. Adding insult to incompetence is the excuse for evangelical babble that this provides. Discuss the hackneyed film and leave your hackneyed theology at home please.

Simple, effective, and with a great message. Think about this, atheism has never created an artistic masterpiece, healed the wounded heart, or brought peace to a troubled life. Only Jesus Christ is Lord and King. To all the ACLU supporters and them as well, Peace be unto you. For on this day a Savior was born to set you free from your chains. Don't be blind like scrooge and claim to be burden free and wait until your demise to find out the truth. Christmas is a Christian day, a memorial to why we have A.D. (Anno Domini, In the Year of Our Lord) in our calender. If you're going to gripe about the holiday, dont celebrate, don't take the day off, don't sit at home and wish for peace, go to the zoo, read a book on darwinism, and tell your children there is no purpose to anything we do. I have to admit, that I haven't heard anything about the christmas truce before. I'm from Germany and it isn't a topic which I have learned at school as far as I remember. But of course, I think that it is a very important aspect of the First World War, mainly because it illustrates, that the search for humaneness can't be completely detained - not even by a dreadful, inhuman war. I think that you successed in creating a movie that seizes that theme in a very emotional, intriguing and moving way without being too sentimental. The scenes were chosen with much prudence, the voice acting seems believeable, that is as authentic as possible so that the atmosphere in this movie is absolutely impressive. Altogether your movie is a great novelty in the small field of anti-war-movies at "The Movies Online" and it also proves that the possibilities of this game aren't limited to anything - aside from everyone's own imagination and creativity.

Both peaceful and enchanting. A truly emotional experience that utterly deserves a 5-star rating - the only 5-star rating I have given a movie so far. And that song... so comforting... Excellent!

I actually read about this in class once. Its great to see a movie based of it that captures the essence of that moment. That moment, as well as the movie, shows that just because two governments hate eachother, doesn't mean two people have to. That angel at the end was an excellent touch as well. Its also one of the few movies that almost made me cry.

That was amazing. To quote a friend because he hit the nail on the head - "Everytime I hear about the Christmas truce, it brings some sense of humanity back to those involved in warfare for me and the belief that most involved on any side are there doing a job that someone else decided they had to do."

The last known surviving allied veteran of the Christmas Truce just passed away on November 21st, 2005. If anyone would like to read about it, you can find the story here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051121/od_nm/britain_veteran_dc

Would have been nice to actually hear you attempt to sing Silentnacht over the trenches :P. Also the omission of mentioning the soccer match (possibly the only time England and Germany have played a friendly and actually been friendly about it!), but that's just nitpicking. This is a fantastic example of a educational feel-good film that all should watch.

You are an intelegent person!! but did you know that after a couple days of this one errogant british soldier shot a german and ended the truce???
if you did you made a good choice not adding it . if this offends you please remove it. You are a genious you shold be a historian on the subject. forget what the people sy about you spelling. you told a story that needed to be told and hopfully the future soldier that see this or other depictions of the event keep this in mind that the warfighter is still a human witha heart

This movie really moved me - You may be interested to know, that in Dec 2005 a German production with Diane Kruger (Helena from "Troy")that dealed with this truce was released in Austria and Germany - it flopped...maybe because none of us has ever heard anything about this...unfortunately.

Nicely put together but kind of boring, like watching someone's school project. I kind of agree with JerseysRay about spelling in these movies. You spelled British wrong and JerseysRay spelled "new" wrong in his ripjob, which I'm sure is the reason you featured it.

Plot - Great - Very well thought out and powerful 5*
Script - Good - The subtitle narative was fine but i felt the soldier VO was alittle cheezy 4*
Music/Sound - Good - The redition of Silent Night was excellent (though im not sure how legal it is). I missed the gunfire fx's though 4*
Editing - Good - Well presented but some scenes were alittle repetitive

I enjoyed the movie very much. As a First World War amateur historian, I would point out that the soldiers did not usually stand on open ground firing their weapons (at least, not if they wanted to survive for long). Rather, they were in muddy, freezing trenches, barely daring to lift their head above the parapet for fear of being killed by an enemy sniper. Yet your film captures the spirit of Christmas which is the only explanation for the miracle known as the Christmas truce of 1914. Thanks for trying a subject which is fading into obscurity, remembered only by a few scholars and Great War students.

I just read about this incident several weeks ago in my history class (before that I read about the last allied witness of the Christmas truce passing away) and even watched a documentary about it. I was even thinking about whether it would be possible to make a movie about the Christmas truce (maybe I'll still try it :D) with The Movies so when I saw the poster for this movie I had to check it out.
I think the best thing that can be said about this film is that it made me think about Christmas and how close it is... I felt very much at peace while watching this movie and started thinking about those soldiers and how brave they must have been to just lay down their weapons and go out and play football with each other! And that, I guess, is the point of this movie. To remind the viewer about how, even during a bloody war and even when you are surrounded by the bodies of your friends, you can still find peace.
If there is something to complain about the movie is that maybe it didn't go into enough details. When I read about this I found it fascinating that the opposing armies actually started to play football together and even helped each other bury the bodies of their dead comrades. Maybe you could have made the message clearer in that way...
Editing was quite good though some of the moments where it faded in or out bothered me.
The message and idea were great but the presentation left a bit to be desired.
Overall: Great job!

Nothing special. You just put war scenes together, they didn't really relate to the story in any big way. Also spelling errors in your subtitles, not very interesting. This is once again a case of just because a movie is about a big event doesn't mean it's good.

Great movie, really touched the heart. As far as spelling goes, that really shouldn't be a part of the critique in my opinion, after all, it's the telling of the story that counts. You got your message through loud and clear. Jesus and God can stop war, if only for a night. God can bring anyone together.

Why, God, why? Ok, here's my idea for the my next film- I'll faithfully reproduce the scene from Ghost where Whoopie Goldberg lets the widowed wife pretend she's the husband and put in that one damn song that everyone loves and everybody will shed a tiny little tear over it and I'll be a "Movies" hero.

My ex-Aunt's great uncle wrote the words to "stille nacht". It is very interesting to see the truce of 1914. A very moving movie, especially watching it so close to Christmas Time. I remember hearing about the story, but that just reminded me all over again. So often, especially being a soldier, the thought of the 'enemy being evil' is pounded into your head, and this just reminds me that everyone is just doing what their country expects of them, doing as their told. Their arent evil, their human and have the same feelings that we do. Very well done.

Movie deserves every star, To think those soldiers gave up arms for one night, traded their own belongings for other soldiers of the enemy force, just doesnt seem like something People of today would be capable of. Film although limited in scenes and stuff Did the best it could to bring across the fact that in the end no matter where yor from who you fight for and what ever you believe in We are all the same, and even the people you consider your enemies could easily be your friends given the chance.

Ok, it was ok, but the repeated scene of him rubbing his face gets very tiresome. And the Angel at the end, just scared me. Especially germans singing silent night. It was ok, but not a great movie. Too much damned laughter. But It was a good idea.

Probably one of the best thought out, and tastefully done movies on here. It's too bad you couldn't get a version of silent night in German dubbed in as well. That would have really played it up, especially if you had thrown it in with people talking, but the options there were really limited, which is one thing I don't like about the software, but hey, you get what they give you. Though, I've always liked this event in history because it featured the common soldier declaring his own peace when politicians wouldn't.

1. originality : Apparantly some other reviewer mentioned it before, but there 's a movie playing in theatres at the moment about the same subject. So the subject is a bit 'used' already- 2
2. Personal appeal : Well I'm always in for a war movie and certainly one about WWI - 5
3. Images : Well quite ok I guess. Nothing spectacular in the movie, maybe because of the music drews attention away from the images? - 3
4. VO - music - subtitles : The music was ok,although at the end it came a bit in the way of the images. The voice over wasn't needed because of the excellent subtitles. 3

I'm fascinated by history. Not the events, but the people involved. When you look back at every major event in the history of the world, it was the people involved that made the decisions that impacted it, and made it an event that's remembered in the history books. Now, I said I was fascinated by history, but I do not know all there is to know, which is why I'm disappointed that I'd never heard of this part of history before. Such is the public education system I guess. Anyway, the Silent Night music was so beautiful, and at the same time sad, when placed in the backdrop of a war. The angel was put in at the exact right moment. This film proves movies don't need to be overly long to be considered a masterpiece.

Posted on December 7, 2005
- PenwithPictures

To be honest, I think this would fall more under the category of "documentary" than anything else. So, with that in mind, I give my rating. I believe it would be possible to do more with this, especially with a review of the subtitled text. There were a few spelling errors that I saw as well, but primarily the text needs to be more contextual. For example, you briefly mention the war's years in length, but then you detail a specific year with giving us a date, thus the timeline consistency suffers.

I always liked hearing about this Christmas truce, and I think you've portrayed it very well. At first I thought the lack of gunshot sounds was an error, but I remember earlier movies using music to block out most of the other sounds to create an emotional scene. It works quite well in this movie. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because of some spelling errors, but I'd recommend it to any of my friends.

Well... I never even knew they held this kind of truce. That's how much I knew of it. I'm happy I watched your movie. It touched me. It shows that there's good in people, and that the only reason they fought was because they had to. They had to serve their country. In the end they were all men and they were all in the same [shhhh!]. Damn. This makes me think.

Good stuff here. Very good. Thank you.

Nice try though, but I'd take Journey's End or All Quite on the Western Front over this. It's not really that much of a movie. It needs an actual story. Very good. Quite atmospheric and a different war movie (and all the better becasue its factual!)
The horse, of course, does kind of spoil it in the middle (and yes horses were used in the war, but you would be very unlikely to find one at the front lines, and especially not tethered in no-mans land!). Also, its their (not thier!).
Other than that, excellent!

Hi Augie! The truce is obviously something that holds a lot of meaning and signifigance for you and this is clearly felt in the film. A very clear and clean film, heartfelt and touching. I personally need a little more character stuff to get "into" a film (like, for me the VO was important, the little snapshot of the soldier helped bring me into the story). But top marks in everything else, editing, story selection. I just want to be more down in the trenches. I realize that you probably wanted to do a sort of floating over the fields kind of film and take it from a distance...

It's very nice to see someone use TMO to explore important inside things.

America came in and saved them from further horror??? I'm sorry to tell you friend, it was Canada, Britain, Ireland and Scotland that had the most men on the worst front lines... A senseless war started by the same types that have us engaged in the present conflicts. Europe, the hallmark of civilization lost so many brave young souls because of Alliances and foolish leadership. America came in and saved them from further horror, when German leadership was foolish enough to think enticing Mexico with the Southwest and sinking Neutral shipping was a good idea. The worst is the result of that 'Great' war, and that is the not-so-great Treat of Versaille(sic) that brought Hitler and turned one of the most civilized and advanced cultures (Germany) into a Hell. This incident REALLY happened, and some say they saw the Archangel Michael (I think, or it might had been the Virgin Mary..). VERY WELL DONE!

What a nice true story to tell for the Christmas season! Very well told. One minor oddity I noticed, not sure if it's by design, but some of the sound effects seemed oddly muted, like rifle fire, while others (explosion pyrotechnics) didn't.

A very moving film. I really, really liked it. Some of the subtitles had minor errors but that didn't detract from a good film. What would make it better in my opinion? More. More details, longer and exploring the subject in greater depth. A very worthwhile watch.

My favourite bit? I liked the campfire scene. It fitted perfectly. Good effort. In anybody else's book I'd give it a five but you seem to have set high standards, so it's 4 stars - watch the spelling I guess.

I thought this film was surprisingly emotional movie...and if all that stuff is true...its really crazy what can happen. I didnt really feel it the whole way through though. Who sang the song? Be careful because this could get pulled if a professional sang that.

It was very touching and all and Im sure the real life event was a great story. Obviously it touched alot of people here but I dont think this movie was a story in and of itself but more of a trailer for a movie your going to make. Touching, honoring, and a glimpse of what mankind is cabable of, but as far as a MOVIE goes or even a short, I dont think it belongs at the top. Perhaps if there was a singular story imbedded in with the rest.

Simply put brilliant, in fact the Angel at the end reminded me of the British Soldiers that said they had seen Angels fight alongside them at the Battle of Mons I think it was. It might have been unwitting but it was a touch that added to the ending of the film, the combination of subtitles and voice work was well done.

I was fascinated by it myself especially the story of them playing football though chances are they just played games with their comrades, I think it comes down to the fact that they were there to do their job which just happened to be fighting. With most people religion dictates that on Holy Days all hate is put aside those that didn't care were probably thankful for one day when they didn't have to worry about death.

Wow... Great movie. I love stories like that where to enemys can lay down thier weapons and just be in peace. And the song went great with the whole thing.

Very nice. Nice feeling. It was fun because I had a chat with my friend (which is a great history-fan) on Skype at the same time as I watched the movie an he told me what he thought was gonna happen at the same time as it happened in the movie. The only negative thing I can think upon is the ending, which barely "wasn't", if u understand what I mean.

The Truce of 1914 always was a fascinating topic, and often brings tears to my eyes when I think about it. This movie honors the soldiers who were brave enough to risk their life by leaving their trenches unarmed. You did a wonderful job of portraying those few days.

I'm speechless. Excellent movie...Excellent. If I could give this movie anything better than five stars, i would do it without even thinking about it. this movie deserves to be somewhere within the rank of second. Perfect movie. i look forward to seeing more.

P.S.
Good job on the song perfect fit, and very good. also that was a good voice on the guy that was hiding. Convinced me.

This film was beautifull, but then again it was short.
Maybe you could make it longer. There was a play about this on my last school, and the story was longer.

If you are going to make a new one, here are the tips:

Voice Acting, use some people with a good voice.
Read the hole story, maybe you could find it on a website.
Feel the drama, tell the story.
Use some actually lines from the story, like "It's Christmas, why are we fighting?" You had one people saying some lines, but you need more.

P.S. I don't think you can use copyright music, yes it was maybe songed by someone else. But there was a lawsuite with that other guy to.

I'll give u a 4 Star, because of the idea and the work you didt.

Scenes and cutting ok! Big flaw is the side-switching inmidst the film (brits on the right side where they were on the left side before...)(I know this is a flaw of the game...)
Because of the original idea and the heart-warming content 5 stars!

Posted on December 1, 2005
- Mishkin1986

In my honest opinion I don't think this movie is worthy of 5 stars as people seem to be giving it. It was pretty much a bunch of fighting scenes here and there with a handshake at the end. No real technique involved, with some subtitles slapped over the top to tell a very basic story. It would have been better if the story was done with voice acting... then again the small amount of voice acting it had in it was quite annoying to say the least.

Totally amazing. Maybe a bit simplistic in its way of retelling the story (which is pretty obvious, since you made it in a PC game), but its such a wonderful heartfelt movie that fits perfectly in due to Christmas.

Very nice work. more of a documentary than an action movie. flawless editing, great ambience. The music combined with the highpaced imagery gives a very strong effect. I will reserve the fifth star for a great piece of fiction, though!

Nice job, what we need is trench props.

Good work capturing the idea... but to anyone who is interested, it was more informal, they were singing from their trenches together, not meeting up and shaking hands.

It actually happened with Canadian and British troops and Germans.

Anyways, nice job matey

A touching film about war ? What are the odds ? It's too bad this was a one time only thing, a few more wars needed something like this happen just to prove that there are still human beings out there. Good thing most xmas songs are public domain, well, for the most part anyway. It was a nice little film all around, and the timeing couldn't have been better seeing it's so close to xmas now.

Yes this was good. A couple of spelling mistakes, and I'm not sure there should be a horse in no-mans land. Still, I wasn't there, so maybe there were some. I don't want to get a reputation for giving 5 stars away to anyone and everyone, as I would lose credibility. This film is fine. I too was enchanted by the story, the first time I heard it. I heard that there was a football (soccer) match, but I'd like to see how that could be done using the tools we have.

One of the best movies on this site and because of its sentiment it should be in the top 5, especially so near to Christmas. It??s difficult to stir emotion even with a huge budget and Hollywood behind you, it??s nice to see someone doing it with only menial tools. Hollywood should take note. Very well done.

Nice film about the Christmas Truce.

A couple of authenticity issues: British soldiers in 1914 wore the Service Dress Cap (the soft peaked cap with a stiff top). Also, probably the best rifle to simulate the British WW1 Lee-Enfield is the WW2 Lee-Enfield. Plus, British and German troops in december 1914 were heavily bundled up against the cold, but I'm not sure if greatcoats are available for use in The Movies, so there may not have been much you could do about that. Anyway those are minor nitpicks from an old WW1 realism nut, so don't pay too much attention.

Altogether a fine job. If you're interested, I also have a WWI movie at http://movies.lionhead.com/movie/14986. You might find it interesting as it has a similar feel to your movie.
